Using the life story method first introduced in The Polish Peasant, this paper analyzes the life story of a „Solidarity” refugee, positioning the subjective standpoint at the center of analysis and interpreting social action as both agentic and responsive to objective conditions. The ontological narrative in his life story is plotted through a professional schema. He defined the turning points in his life as intentionally driven by his motivation to be an organizational psychologist: his opposition within the communist system; the reason for his internment during martial law; the choice of where to emigrate; and the decision to return to Poland. He constructed a coherent narrative defined by volitional reactions to changing situations. In the life story method, subjective perceptions encode objective conditions allowing us to analyze the interactions between the self and society. The life story, or narrative identity, is a psychosocial construction that brings together and integrates the self and experience within a broad story-based framework. Personality psychologists typically capture aspects of this inner story by prompting participants for descriptions of life chapters and/or specific and self-definitional autobiographical key scenes (e.g., high points, low points, turning points). Features of participants’ responses are then quantified for their thematic and/or structural content. There exists a number of additional and complementary assessment techniques that could buttress study of, and theory pertaining to, narrative identity. Here, I work to identify these assessments, which include self-reports, informant reports, and behavioral observations, and organize them within narrative identity’s nomological network. This work concludes with a number of suggestions for the ways in which traditional assessments may be better attuned to capture narrative identity’s integrative nature.

The author presented the current situation of Poland in both skeptical and optimistic perspectives. The transformation of 1989 is indicated as the genesis of current challenges of the country. In the next part of the article there are suggested actions that could be taken after the transformation in the field of state and organization management in order to realize the idea of Poland as the “second Japan”. The last part of the article is devoted to describing what can still be learned from the Far East countries in the field of economy and management.

The subject of the article is a reflection on the significance of the study Polish Peasant in Europe and America by W.I. Thomas and F. Znaniecki as a canonical text in the field of qualitative and, especially, biographical research. Referring to the criticism carried out by Herbert Blumer in 1939, it is an attempt to present to what extent the critical arguments remain valid nowadays and to what extent they can be verified by taking into account the contemporary state of the biographical method. The aim of the text is also to show the tension between the pioneering contribution of the authors to social research and the declarations contained in the Methodological Note and their implementation concerning the empirical material, namely the Memoirs of an Immigrant (Władek Wiśniewski) published in Volume III. Modern subject is interested in studying his or her identity, however this act of examination nullifies its object: showing it as problematical or even non-existent, impossible to maintain as coherent entity. As time passes, the problem radicalizes itself, as it is shown in the works of theoreticians of ‘late modernity’: identity is often treated as a project, non-conclusive process of seeking the optimal states of well-being. As the various ‘identity crises’ go on, it is stated in various ways, that even subjectivity itself is waning. Maybe focusing on individual, as someone who has particular identity is not the best way of entangling this knot of problems. Interesting inspirations come from psychoanalysis. Firstly, psychoanalytical theory shows us, that individual with particular traits is not the same, as subject, and that subject is always-already ‘deconstructed’, divided. Secondly, problems with identity may be elucidated, when we turn to psychoanalytical theories of identification. In fact, what we often call ‘identities’ is better to be understood as partial and even theatrical identification with some content. The article shows how certain concepts of Freud and Lacan can be used to clarify complex or even obscure problems that haunt the notion of ‘identity’ as a source of meaning, used by social sciences. Chapter 2 reviews research and theory on the life story and its development and relations to other aspects of personality. The authors introduce the integrative framework of McAdams and Pals, who described three levels in a broad model of personality: personality traits; personal goals, values, and projects; and the unique life story, which provides a degree of unity and purpose to the individual’s life. This narrative, which develops in late adolescence and emerging adulthood, as individuals become able to author their own stories, includes key scenes of emotional and personal importance to provide a sense of continuity, while remaining flexible and dynamic in incorporating changes in the self over time. The chapter ends with a description of Alison, an emerging adult from our Canadian Futures Study, who illustrates these levels and what they tell about personality development during this period.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how the boundaries of rhetoric have excluded important theoretical and practical subjects and how these subjects are recuperated and extended since the twentieth century. Its purpose is to foster the awareness on emerging new trends of rhetoric. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology is based on an interpretation of the history of rhetoric and on the construction of a conceptual framework of the rhetoric of judgment, which is introduced in this paper. Findings – On the subject of the extension of rhetoric from public speeches to any kinds of persuasive situations, the paper emphasizes some stimulating relationships between the theory of communication and rhetoric. On the exclusion and recuperation of the subject of rhetorical arguments, it presents the changing relationships between rhetoric and dialectics and emphasizes the role of rhetoric in scientific research. On the introduction of rhetoric of judgment and meanings it creates a conceptual framework based on a re-examination of the concept of judgment and the phenomenological foundations of the interpretative methods of social sciences by Alfred Schutz, relating them to symbolic interactionism and theories of the self. Originality/value – The study on the changing boundaries of rhetoric and the introduction of the rhetoric of judgment offers a new view on the present theoretical and practical development of rhetoric, which opens new subjects of research and new fields of applications.

The question of the extent to which the concrete physical environment allows, causes, or even forces certain forms of behaviour to occur has been excluded from social sciences literature for a long time. More recent studies from environmental psychology show that the built environment, filtered by subjective perceptions, very probably influences the experience and actions of individuals. Town planning and transport planning is orientated towards the needs, demands, or simply the observed behaviour of social groups, segments of the population, and target groups of individuals. However, at this level the evidence about whether a spatiospecific determinant should be added to the sociodemographic, sociocultural, or socioeconomic determinants is very inconclusive. This paper investigates the influence of certain types of area on behaviour, and uses about 70000 weekday records at the level of differentiated groups of people. Everyday behaviour of the groups is quantified by their time budgets and daily programmes with broad groupings of out-of-house activities as well as various indicators of transport mobility. This study shows that with given characteristics of the individual and his household a series of behavioural parameters does not vary in space and thus these parameters can be used as input for behaviourally orientated transport demand models and transferred from one planning area to another.
