The subject of the article is a reflection on the significance of the study Polish Peasant in Europe and America by W.I. Thomas and F. Znaniecki as a canonical text in the field of qualitative and, especially, biographical research. Referring to the criticism carried out by Herbert Blumer in 1939, it is an attempt to present to what extent the critical arguments remain valid nowadays and to what extent they can be verified by taking into account the contemporary state of the biographical method. The aim of the text is also to show the tension between the pioneering contribution of the authors to social research and the declarations contained in the Methodological Note and their implementation concerning the empirical material, namely the Memoirs of an Immigrant (Władek Wiśniewski) published in Volume III. Using the life story method first introduced in The Polish Peasant, this paper analyzes the life story of a „Solidarity” refugee, positioning the subjective standpoint at the center of analysis and interpreting social action as both agentic and responsive to objective conditions. The ontological narrative in his life story is plotted through a professional schema. He defined the turning points in his life as intentionally driven by his motivation to be an organizational psychologist: his opposition within the communist system; the reason for his internment during martial law; the choice of where to emigrate; and the decision to return to Poland. He constructed a coherent narrative defined by volitional reactions to changing situations. In the life story method, subjective perceptions encode objective conditions allowing us to analyze the interactions between the self and society. The author presented the current situation of Poland in both skeptical and optimistic perspectives. The transformation of 1989 is indicated as the genesis of current challenges of the country. In the next part of the article there are suggested actions that could be taken after the transformation in the field of state and organization management in order to realize the idea of Poland as the “second Japan”. The last part of the article is devoted to describing what can still be learned from the Far East countries in the field of economy and management.

The subject of participation has been gathering increasing interest from the various social disciplines: from politology to psychology, from urban sociology to evaluation, this concept carries a particular fascination and discussing participatory research has now become an absolute must. However, an adequate reflection on methodologies for analyzing research practices and evaluating hypotheses and effects when setting up actual research relationships has not followed on the tail of this new tendency. This paper arises from that need and aims, through discussion of the main debates that have interested science and sociology, to reevaluate a critical approach towards the analysis of the social relationships that are created during a research investigation. This study starts out as a reflection aimed at analyzing the impact that participation, in all its various forms, can have on the way research is carried out. The originality of this article lies in the proposal of a form of participation, and from this, the expression of a hope for the future of social sciences: that we can aspire towards a dialogical model and towards a new cooperative and emancipatory relationship with the public.

Susan’s ‘Faites vos jeux, messieurs. Rien ne va plus’ — The Politics of Liberalism — Bertrand de JouvenelSusan’s ‘Faites Vos Jeux, Messieurs. Rien Ne Va Plus’ Professor Susan Strange is widely recognised as the foremost British exponent of the meta-discipline of International Political Economy, better known under its nickname IPE. I define it as a meta-discipline because, as is well known, its purpose it to fuse into one the three previously disparate disciplines of economics, politics (notably comparative politics, political sociology and public policy) and international relations which can make sense now only when they are related to each other. The nineteenth-century founders of the social sciences had simply used the name of Political Economy. But then the unforeseeable agglomeration of empirical material led to an objective need for specialization and to a subjective professional interest which in turn led not only to a growing differentiation in the subject-matter, but also to an unnatural incompatibility of perspectives. Like many other artificial barriers which have fallen under the sweep of twentieth-century interdependence, the disciplinary barriers, and even the inadequate ‘interdisciplinary collaborations’ between the major social sciences, should now return to the initial common matrix. Whether the end result will indeed be a new, unique, science, or whether the social sciences will learn how to ‘see’ trifocally is another matter.

This chapter includes the final remarks about conducting digital social studies. It summarizes the book briefly and encourages to start own independent projects. This monograph has presented the variety of approaches and tools to conduct social research of and through the online world. It explained why the Internet ought to be the subject of sociological studies, and why even traditional social sciences projects ought to include elements of online research. It identified three trends that are strictly connected with the development of communication technology and networks (online transformation of interpersonal relations, crisis of expert knowledge, and the sharing economy). It indicated their importance in many areas, and the need for deep and recurring social science analyses due to the high changeability of the phenomena. It then described the main quantitative approaches, focusing on those that do not require long-term specialist training. It highlighted those qualitative methods that may be used to interpret quantitative research and be a starting point for qualitative analysis. It outlined the possibilities of doing online cultural studies—studying products of Internet culture as a valid method of doing social sciences. Finally, it outlined the ethical considerations that every author of a digital study ought to consider.

The subject of this article is the substantiation of problematic situation that requires attention of social sciences. Rapid transition of multiple types of relations of citizens with official structures and economic agents to digital form is accompanied by contradictory consequences. The facts demonstrate that in the conditions of techworld, latent exploitation of users of digital platforms becomes the norm. This phenomenon already caught the attention of economists, media theoreticians, specialists in the area of information systems and strategic managements, but still has not become the subject of interests of social scientists. The author describes the examples of paid professional activity, which regular citizens are forced to carry out without due compensation, if they desire to use digital gadgets, platforms and various services. The differences between latent exploitation and acquisition of labor through crowdsourcing are demonstrated. A conclusion is made that the concept, according to which digital platforms exploit users “not as employees, but the audience” requires appending, since in addition to production of Big Data, the users unconsciously and without compensation fulfill actual labor functions for the corporations and “digital government”. This aspect requires an in-depth social research.

The aim of the study is to clarify the concept of the digital footprint in jurisprudence and social sciences and determine its meaning for interdisciplinary research. The subject of this work is the analysis of the concepts of “digital footprint”, “digital reputation”, “digital image of a person”. The article notes that special machine techniques are required to process digital traces. The ways of storage, transmission and use of digital traces are considered. The research identified the main problems of using digital information in public relations. Digital traces can be used in various studies in the humanities, social sciences: sociology, law, economics, psychology using interdisciplinary research methods. The result of the study was the conclusion that digital information does not always mean a digital footprint. Digital information will have a digital footprint only when it is transferred from one user to another in an online environment, uploaded to a social network, etc. (in the case when it is possible to "trace" its movement). Thus, the "digital footprint" is the ability of information recorded in digital form, to leave special "marks" on the route from subscriber to subscriber, the ability to track such marks, receive information about its movement and transformation in order to collect, process and analyze these data.

The purpose of the paper is to determine the key strategies for applying the methodology of philosophical hermeneutics in social sciences, which is realized in solving of the following tasks: 1)to determine theoretical conditions for the turn of philosophical hermeneutics towards applied social research; 2)to identify key concepts and techniques of philosophical hermeneutics, relevant to the measurement of actual social phenomena; 3) to outline the logic of application of the elements of philosophical hermeneutics within social science. Methodology of the research is formed by methods of immanent critique of philosophical discourse, adapted to the subject horizon of social studies. Scientific originality of the paper is expressed in the following statements: 1) the theoretical conditions for the applied turn of philosophical hermeneutics include the pragmatic critique of ontologization of the hermeneutic circle, that is, the reinterpretation of philosophical hermeneutics contrary to the key guidelines of its founders (M. Heidegger, H.-G. Gadamer); 2) key concepts and techniques of philosophical hermeneutics, relevant to the measurement of actual social phenomena, are the hermeneutic circle and self-understanding, hermeneutical reduction and destruction; 3) the logic of the applied use of the elements of philosophical hermeneutics in the context of social science involves correlation of the structure of the research with the hermeneutic structure of self-understanding, inherent in the subject under investigation. Conclusion: The study of the conditions of the applied turn of philosophical hermeneutics proved the fundamental importance of setting the problem of the synthesis of fundamental and applied science.
