This paper develops a conductive heat transfer stability theory for the laser-driven melting and recrystallization of thin silicon films deposited on conductive (glass) substrates. The important parameters are: laser power, laser intensity distribution, and beam scanning speed. Basic state temperature distributions are obtained for straight phase boundaries. These calculated temperature distributions show the origin of instability. A linear perturbation analysis is used to obtain the leading order corrections to the basic-state temperature fields. The perturbation time rate of growth, as a function of the disturbance wavelength, is then predicted.

AbstractThe minority-carrier diffusion length in thin silicon films can be extracted from the electrically-detected transient grating method, EDTG, by a simple ambipolar analysis only in the case of lifetime dominated carrier transport. If the dielectric relaxation time, τdiel, is larger than the photocarrier response time, τR, then unexpected negative transient signals can appear in the EDTG result. Thin silicon films deposited by hot-wire chemical vapor deposition (HWCVD) near the amorphous-to-microcrystalline transition, where τR varies over a large range, appeared to be ideal candidates to study the interplay between carrier recombination and dielectric response. By modifying the ambipolar description to allow for a time-dependent carrier grating build-up and decay we can obtain a good agreement between analytical calculation and experimental results.

Freestanding SiCNO ceramic pieces with sub-mm features were produced by laser crosslinking of carbosilane and silazane polymer precursors followed by pyrolysis in inert atmosphere. Three different pulsed UV laser systems were investigated, and the influence of laser wavelength, operating power and scanning speed were all found to be important. Different photoinitiators were tested for the two lasers operating at 355 nm, while for the 266 nm laser, crosslinking occurred also without photoinitiator. Pre-treatment of glass substrates with fluorinated silanes was found to ease the release of green bodies during solvent development. Polymer crosslinking was observed with all three of the laser systems, as were bubbles, surface charring and in some cases ablation. By focusing the laser beam several millimeters above the surface of the resin, selective polymer crosslinking was observed exclusively.

Conductive indium-tin oxide (ITO) and non-conductive glass substrates were successfully modified with embedded gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) formed by controlled thermal annealing at 550 °C for 8 h in a preselected oven. The authors characterized the formation of AuNPs using two microscopic techniques: scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The analytical performances of the nanostructured-glasses were compared regarding biosensing of Hsp70, an ATP-driven molecular chaperone. In this work, the human heat-shock protein (Hsp70), was chosen as a model biomarker of body stress disorders for microwave spectroscopic investigations. It was found that microwave screening at 4 GHz allowed for the first time the detection of 12 ng/µL/cm2 of Hsp70.
