Building Faculty SoTL Skills Through a Multi- and Interdisciplinary Writing Community of Practice

Cultivating a community of faculty to support Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) work at universities can be challenging. There are many obstacles to overcome—obstacles such as how to sustain such efforts over time. The Center for Educational Excellence set out to design a strategic plan designed to address certain barriers to SoTL work and to create a long-standing community of practice for a SoTL group of faculty members—a group that has lasted over nine years to date. This chapter outlines strategies employed over the years and the evolution of the interdisciplinary group from a learning community to community of practice. The stories of past and present members are included along with advice on how others may have successful programs at their universities.

ESENSI PENDIDIKAN ONTOLOGIS HEIDEGGER BAGI PENDIDIKAN TINGGI

This paper is aimed at examining the Heidegger's ideas in dealing with the current crisis in higher education. Such issues as instrumentalization, professionalization, vocationalization, and technologization in today's modern university have resulted in the increasing hyper-specialization and ruinous fragmentation of its all aspects. On this stand, Heidegger offers an ontological conception of education that is purposefully capable of bringing about a renaissance of the university. Inspired by the Plato’s popular ‘allegory of the cave’, Heidegger both excavates and appropriates the original Western educational ideal of Platonic paideia. In addition, The Heidegger's notion of ontological education could be considered as a philosophical perfectionism, a re-essentialization of the currently empty ideal of educational ‘excellence’ by which Heidegger believes we can reconnect teaching to research and, ultimately, reunify and revitalize the university itself.Keywords: Ontological education, Allegory of the Cave, Paideia, re-essentialization

Educational Excellence in der Wirtschafts- ingenieur-Ausbildung

Für Educational Excellence muss die Ausbildung angehender Akademiker den Spagat zwischen Wissenschaft und Praxis meistern. Einfache Praktika u. a. klassische Ansätze reichen für Educational Excellence, angelehnt an die Anforderungen der Operational Excellence, nicht aus. Vorgestellt wird das an der ESB Business School der Hochschule Reutlingen seit vielen Jahren in der Wirtschaftsingenieurausbildung für Produktion und Logistik in einem Projekt-Masterstudiengang mit vielen Industriepartnern praktizierte kooperative Modell der Educational Excellence.
