EFFECTS OF FEEDING AVOPARCIN IN COMBINATION WITH PROGESTERONE-ESTRADIOL IMPLANTS ON GROWING AND FINISHING STEERS

Two, experiments were conducted with growing and finishing steers to determine the performance response to feeding avoparcin with or without progesterone-estradiol (Synovex-S) implants. In exp. 1, 96 crossbred yearling steers were fed diets containing 40% hay crop silage (DM basis) for 168 days. Avoparcin increased (P < 0.05) weight gains (16%) and feed efficiency (16%). Initial Synovex-S implants increased (P < 0.05) weight gain (14%) and feed efficiency (11%). Reimplanting at 112 days tended to further improve (P > 0.05) rate of gain and feed efficiency over initial implanting. In exp. 2, 80 Hereford yearling steers were fed diets containing only 19% corn silage (DM basis) for 98 days. Avoparcin had no effect on weight gain but improved (P > 0.05) feed efficiency (11%). Synovex improved (P < 0.05) weight gain (17%) and feed efficiency (11%). In both experiments treatments produced no effects on carcass measurements except for an increase in warm carcass weight. Also, in both experiments the effects of avoparcin and Synovex on feed efficiency were fully additive. Key words: Growth promotants, implants, feed additives, steers

An experiment was conducted with 3840 male Ross × Arbor Acres broiler chicks to test the effects of increasing dietary methionine and lysine on performance and breast meat yield. Supplemental methionine and lysine were fed in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement in both starter (0–3 wk) and finisher (3–6 wk) diets. Methionine was fed at levels of NRC and 112% NRC. Lysine was fed at levels of NRC and 106% NRC, 112% NRC and 118% NRC. Increasing dietary methionine increased weight gain (P < 0.01), feed efficiency (P < 0.01) from 3 to 6 wk, and breast meat yield (P < 0.01) at 6 wk. Increasing dietary lysine caused a curvilinear response in breast meat yield (P < 0.05). Key words: Broiler, lysine, methionine, breast meat

The performance of growing pigs fed 2 mg kg−1 of one of several Fusarium graminearum metabolites (sambucinol, 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol, 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol, culmorin, dihydroxycalonectrin) with and without 6 mg kg−1 deoxynivalenol (DON) was examined in three preliminary studies. The only significant effects (P < 0.05) were seen in feed consumption, weight gain and feed efficiency due to the presence of DON in the diet. In addition, the appearance and degree of folding of the esophageal portion of the stomach were also different between pigs fed the DON-free and DON-contaminated diets, though the degree of significance varied between trials. Some small differences were seen in growth and feed consumption for certain metabolites, notably sambucinol and culmorin, with and without DON, but they were not significant (P > 0.05). The data indicate that, at the dietary concentrations used, the fungal metabolites tested in combination with DON do not interact with DON in growing pigs to any marked degree. Sixty small-framed yearling Hereford and Hereford cross steers initially averaging 268 kg were reared on pasture from May to October, divided into two (30 each) approximately equal weight groups and placed in a feedlot. The steers were serially slaughtered in groups of 10 (five heaviest from each treatment) after 0, 35, 70, 98, 126 or 154 days of feedlot finishing on either grass or corn silage supplemented with 0.9–2.3 kg-head−1∙day−1 of a mixed grain ration containing 5% molasses. Average gains on pasture were 0.80, 0.75 and 0.54 kg/day for the consecutive 59, 48 and 61 day periods between 9 May and 24 Oct. Steers finished on corn silage gained significantly faster (P < 0.05) and had significantly more dissectable rib fat when slaughtered (0.82 kg/day; 27.6%) than steers finished on grass silage (0.51 kg/day; 24.6%). Six of the 10 steers slaughtered off pasture graded B1 or C1 while one of the feedlot steers graded B1 and the remaining 53 graded A1 or A2. The subjective carcass fat color score of the steers slaughtered off pasture averaged 4.7 which was significantly greater than the fat color of the feedlot finished steers (3.0–3.6). The corn silage steers had a color rating of 3.4 while the grass silage steers rated 3.7. The results of this experiment indicate that yearling steers reared on pasture and finished between 35 and 70 days on grass or corn silage with low concentrate supplementation will produce acceptable carcasses in terms of grade and subjective fat color score. This study was designed using a complete randomized design (RAL) with four treatments and each treatment was repeated as many as 5m (five) times to obtain 20 experimental units, each experimental unit consisting of 5 (five) chickens. The tested treatment was giving various doses of red fruit oil with the application of mouth drops. The given dose is 0 cc / tail (0 drops), 0.05 cc / tail (1 drop), 0.1 cc / head (2 drops), and 0.15 cc / tail (3 drops). Red (Pandanus Conodeus Lam) dose of 0.15 cc (3 drops) increased live weight gain and best carcass weight at week V and significantly different from control treatment and 0.05 cc / head. Provision of 0.15 cc red fruit oil (3 drops) resulted in live weight of 2.046 kg / head, carcass weight of 1,462 kg and percentage of carcasses 71%. Key Words : Red Fruits (Pandanus Conodeus. lam), Broiler, Weight of carcasses

Research designed by using Randomized Design Group and each treatment was replicated two times. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance and Continued with LSD test. The addition of kebar grass concentrates had no effect in ration and feed efficiency, but significantly affect body weight gain in treatment of 10% and 15% compared to without addition (0%) of kebar grass and 5%. Abstract An experiment was conducted comparing medicated feed additives (MFA) bambermycin or monensin sodium and tylosin phosphate in feedlot diets containing modified distillers grains (mDGS). Crossbred steers (n = 256; initial full BW 418 ± 28.5 kg) were allocated into three weight blocks in a randomized complete block design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The factors were: MFA (bambermycin at 20 mg/steer daily or monensin + tylosin at 380 and 90 mg/steer daily, respectively) and mDGS inclusion (15% and 30% of diet DM). Twenty-four pens were utilized, resulting in six replications per treatment. Steers were fed a diet consisting of a 1:1 combination of dry-rolled and high-moisture corn with the roughage portion of the diet consisting of corn silage and corn stover. Steers in the heaviest two blocks were marketed after 104 d and steers in the lightest block were marketed after 126 d. Overall average daily gain (ADG) tended (P = 0.08) to be greater for bambermycin vs. monensin and tylosin, and was not affected (P = 0.17) by mDGS level. Dry matter intake was lower (P ≤ 0.05) with 30% mDGS with monensin and tylosin than with any other treatment. Feed efficiency was not affected by mDGS, MFA, or their interaction (P ≥ 0.30). Marbling scores were greater (P = 0.01) greater for bambermycin vs. monensin and tylosin, and tended (P = 0.08) to be greater with 15% mDGS than with 30% mDGS. Carcasses from steers fed bambermycin had a greater percentage of USDA choice than those fed with monensin and tylosin (P = 0.01). Liver abscess occurrence was not affected (P ≥ 0.17) by MFA, mDGS, or their interaction. Results from this experiment indicate that including bambermycin in feedlot diets containing 30% mDGS results in increased DMI when compared with including monensin and tylosin in 30% mDGS diet without the risk for increases in liver abscess occurrence.

Five corn-soybean-based diets were formulated to contain 0, 15, 20, 25, or 30% raw peas and fed for 35 d to ninety-six 21-d-old pigs. Raw peas were included at the expense of corn and soybean meal. Increasing levels of raw peas depressed daily gain (P = 0.07), feed intake (P = 0.04) from days 21 to 56. Specifically, pigs fed diet with 25% peas had 19 and 25% lower average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI), respectively, than pigs fed the diet with 0% peas. The body weight (BW) was also linearly reduced (P = 0.10) on day 56. However, diets did not affect feed efficiency. Key words: Growth performance, peas, pig
