EFFECTS OF DIETARY COMPOSITION ON THE RELATIVE PERFORMANCE AND CARCASS CHARACTERISTICS OF MALE AND FEMALE PIGS FED FROM 25 KG TO 92 KG LIVEWEIGHT

One hundred and twenty-four feeder pigs, representing two breed groups (Hampshire × Yorkshire and Yorkshire) were used in three experiments to compare the live performance and carcass characteristics of boars, barrows and gilts fed, from 25 to 92 kg, a 16% protein, barley–soybean meal diet or diets based on a utility grade, soft wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Pitic 62) with 0, 7½ and 15% field peas (Pisum sativum cv. Century) to provide total protein levels of 13, 14 or 15%. Under conditions of adequate nutrition, boars were superior to barrows in efficiency of feed conversion and estimates of carcass leanness, while gilts were intermediate in feed conversion and equivalent to boars in carcass indices. The amount and composition of the diet consumed had a greater effect upon the relative performance of boars and, to a lesser extent, of gilts than was observed with barrows. In addition, the dressing percentage was consistently lower with boars than with barrows or gilts. Sexual odor or taint was not noticeably present in the carcasses at the packing plant, although there was a tendency for meat from boars on restricted feeding to have a higher moisture and darker lean than that present in carcasses from barrows and gilts. The results also suggested that satisfactory performance of growing–finishing pigs could be achieved with diets based on Pitic 62 wheat using field peas as the sole source of supplementary protein.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of expanded diets on growth performance, meat quality, and carcass characteristics in finishing pigs. A total of 80 finishing pigs [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] were randomly allotted to two dietary treatments: 1) unexpanded corn-soybean meal diets; 2) expanded corn-soybean meal diets. Each treatment consisted of ten replicate pens with four pigs (2 gilts and 2 barrows) per pen. There were no differences in daily feed intake and daily gain throughout the experiment (P less than 0.05). However, expanded diets decreased feed conversion ratio compared with unexpanded diets (P less than 0.05). Expanded diets had no effect on carcass characteristics and meat quality with the exception of increased sensory evaluation (color) of meat compared with unexpanded diets (P less than 0.05). In conclusion, expanded diets can improve feed conversion ratio but have no effect on daily gain and daily feed intake and sensory evaluation of meat color.

SUMMARYNinety pigs were divided into two replicated groups, randomly allotted to three treatments: (1) control, (2) 2 g of diethylstilbestrol (DES) and 2 g of methyltestosterone (MT) per ton and (3) 2 g DES + 2 g MT + 10 g tylosin per ton. Rate of gain was not affected by treatment; however, pigs fed the treated rations consumed less feed and were more efficient in feed conversion. Carcasses of pigs fed DES + MT or DES + MT + tylosin had significantly less backfat and a slightly higher percentage of ham and loin, and of lean cuts.

It was evaluated the effect of diets supplemented or not supplemented with ractopamine and digestible lysine on the performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs. A total of 50 barrows and 50 gilts (90.2 kg ± 3.5 kg) were used. In the growth performance trial, a randomized block design was utilized in a 5 x 2 factorial arrangement, consisting of five levels of digestible lysine (0.68; 0.78; 0.88; 0.98 and 1.08%) and two levels of ractopamine (0 and 5 ppm), totaling ten diets and five replications. In a study of carcass characteristics, the same design and levels of lysine and ractopamine were used, but another factor (sex of animals- female and male) was included, totaling 20 treatments, each one with five replicates. Except for lysine daily intake, it was not observed effect of levels of digestible lysine. The supplementation with ractopamine improved daily weight gain and feed conversion but it did not affect the average feed intake. A greater loin depth and higher yield of carcass meat was obtained in gilts, regardless to supplementation with ractopamine, and also in the males fed ractopamine. The ractopamine improved the rib-eye area but it did not affect the yield and carcass length neither thickness of subcutaneous fat. The levels of digestible lysine did not affect carcass characteristics in either sex. It was found that sex had effect on backfat thickness, which was lower in the carcasses of gilts. The use of 5 ppm ractopamine improves animal performance and carcass characteristics of barrows. The level of 0.68% digestible lysine is sufficient for pigs of both sexes fed diets supplemented with or without ractopamine to show maximal performance and a good carcass composition.

Cull raw soybeans (SB), cv. Maple Amber, containing 17% oil and 36% crude protein (CP), were included as 0, 4.5, 9, 13.5, 18 and 22.5% of barley-based diets formulated to contain 16% CP. The mash diets were fed ad libitum to a total of 53 Landrace boars over the period from 30 to 95 kg average liveweight using a randomized block design with three replicates. Live performance responses to the increase in dietary SB content included a decline in overall growth rate (from 830 to 639 g d−1, P < 0.01) and efficiency of feed conversion (from 333 to 269 g gain per kg feed, P < 0.01). Post-kill measurements indicated an effect of dietary SB level on side weight (from 46 to 43% of carcass, P < 0.01), liver weight (from 24.8 to 28.2 g kg−1 warm carcass, P < 0.01) and areas of lean in the loin cross-section (from 31 to 26 cm2, P < 0.01) and ham face (from 137 to 121 cm2, P < 0.01) for pigs fed 0 and 22.5% SB diets, respectively. Analyses of samples of longissimus dorsi revealed a reduction in CP content (from 22.9 to 21.5%, P < 0.01) and increase in moisture content (from 74.4 to 75.4%, P < 0.05) for pigs fed the highest SB level compared to the control pigs. Iodine absorption numbers of the outer backfat layer increased, from 58 to 70 (P < 0.01), with the SB level fed. Sensory evaluation revealed a significant (P < 0.05) increase in incidence of off-flavor in loin roasts from boars fed diets containing more than 9% SB. The overall results suggested that a diet containing up to 5% SB would be unlikely to adversely affect performance or carcass merit of growing-finishing pigs. This study was conducted to determine the performance and carcass characteristics of growing-finishing pigs fed diets containing graded levels of canaryseed. Sixty-four crossbred pigs (Pig Improvement Canada Ltd) weighing 34.4 ± 2.8 kg were assigned on the basis of sex, weight and litter to one of five dietary treatments in a factorial (5 treatments × 2 sexes) arrangement. A barley and soybean meal diet served as the control. The remaining pigs were fed diets in which approximately 25, 50, 75 or 100% of the barley was replaced by canaryseed (cv. Elias). There was a linear (P = 0.01) decrease in dry matter digestibility with increasing level of canaryseed. In contrast, crude protein digestibility showed a linear increase (P = 0.01) with increasing level of canaryseed. Gross energy digestibility of the diets did not differ (P > 0.05). Over the entire experimental period (34.4 to 107.8 kg), there was a quadratic (P = 0.01) response for weight gain. The 25% canaryseed diet supported the highest growth rate and pigs fed the 100% canaryseed diet had the lowest gain. Feed intake and feed conversion were unaffected (P > 0.05) by level of canaryseed. There were no differences (P > 0.05) in carcass weight, carcass value index, estimated lean yield, loin fat depth or loin lean depth as a result of canaryseed inclusion. However, there was a quadratic (P = 0.02) response for dressing percentage with increasing level of canaryseed. The overall results of this experiment provide a favorable indication that canaryseed can be successfully fed to growing-finishing pigs without dramatically affecting pig performance or carcass characteristics. Therefore, in the future, the swine industry may provide an alternative to the caged bird market as an outlet for growers of canary seed to market their product. A study was carried out to investigate the effect of dietary crude protein (CP) levels in diets of 2600kcal kg metabolisable energy content on the performance and carcass characteristics of cockerel finishers. The experimental diets A, B, C, D and E contained CP levels of 140, 160, 180, 200 and 200g kg and they were produced by modified diet dilution technique. Response criteria such as weight gain and feed conversion ratio, among others, and carcass characteristics were measured. Results on performance and carcass characteristics, with the exception of the neck, intestinal weights  and other visceral offals, revealed that these response criteria were optimized in the birds fed on 180g kg dietary CP level. Beyond this level, it was nor beneficial to feed higher CP levels. It is therefore, concluded that the CP requirement of finisher cockerels is 18% on the bases of their Performance and carcass characteristics.

To evaluate the effect of organic chromium (Cr) and selenium (Se) supplementation on performance and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs, 300 castrated males were distributed in a randomized block design with three treatments and five replications of 20 pigs each. Treatments consisted of different diets, formulated to reach or exceed Rostagno et al. (2011) nutritional requirements, as follows: 1) control - basal diet without organic Cr and Se supplementation from 70 to 130 kg of body weight; 2) CrSe70 - basal diet supplemented with 0.8 mg kg-1 of Cr- and 0.6 mg kg-1 of Se-enriched yeast from 70 to 130 kg of body weight; 3) CrSe100 - basal diet without organic Cr and Se supplementation from 70 to 100 kg of body weight followed by basal diet supplemented with 0.8 mg kg-1 of Cr- and 0.6 mg kg-1 of Se-enriched yeast from 100 to 130 kg of body weight. Performance was evaluated by measuring body weight, daily weight gain, daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio. At the end of experimental period, pigs were sacrificed and lean meat percentage, longissimus dorsi muscle depth, back fat thickness, and carcass bonus index were determined using prediction equations generated by the software Hennessy System GP4 after carcass scanning with an electronic probe. Data were submitted to one-way ANOVA and in case of significant differences (P ? 0.05), means were compared by SNK multiple-range test. Daily feed intake (P = 0.008) and feed conversion ratio (P = 0.004) decreased for pigs supplemented with Cr- and Se-enriched yeast from 70 to 100 kg of body weight. Otherwise, pigs supplemented between 100 and 130 kg of body weight increased (P = 0.032) daily feed intake in comparison to the control group. Regarding carcass characteristics, Cr- and Se-enriched yeast supplementation increased (P = 0.019) longissimus dorsi muscle depth in both CrSe70 and CrSe100 treatments. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of Cr- and Se-enriched yeast for castrated male pigs between 70 and 130 kg of body weight increases longissimus dorsi muscle depth in carcass without affecting final body weight or daily weight gain of the animals.

Forty-eight Yorkshire pigs were fed, ad libitum, 18% protein diets which contained 0, 7.5, 15 and 30% faba beans (Vicia faba L. cv. Ackerperle), over the growth period from 25 to 90 kg liveweight. An additional 16 pigs were similarly fed diets containing 15% faba beans or 15% field peas (Pisum sativum L. cv. Trapper). In experiment I, replacement of soybean meal (44% protein) by faba beans as the protein supplement resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) linear reduction in growth rate, from 784 g to 727 g/day, and a linear improvement in Carcass Value Index, from 103.5 to 106.5. The latter effect appeared to be a result of a reduction in backfat thickness rather than an increase in areas of lean tissue. Feed to gain ratio of pigs fed the 7.5% faba bean diet (3.30 kg feed/kg gain) was significantly (P < 0.05) better than all other levels examined. In experiment II, significant differences in live performance and in carcass characteristics of pigs fed faba beans or field peas were not detected. Calculation of the replacement value of faba beans, in relation to barley and soybean meal prices, confirmed the conclusions from other studies which suggested that the greatest benefit is obtained when faba beans constitute part but not all of the supplementary protein in diets for growing–finishing pigs.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the digestible-lysine (Lys) requirement in diets supplemented or not with ractopamine (RAC), so as to maximise performance and carcass characteristics for finishing barrows reared at thermoneutral conditions. In total, 128 high-lean commercial hybrid barrows with an initial bodyweight of 78.2 ± 4.3 kg were distributed in a completely randomised block design, in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement (four Lys concentrations: 0.730%, 0.830%, 0.930% and 1.030% and two RAC inclusions: 0 and 10 mg/kg), with two animals per pen and eight pens per treatment. Lys concentrations tested significantly (P &lt; 0.05) affected digestible-lysine intake, and the absolute (g) and relative (%) lean meat content, regardless of RAC inclusion. When diets were RAC-supplemented, feed conversion rate of animals was improved and, in addition, final bodyweight, daily bodyweight gain, loin eye area, loin eye depth, and absolute (g) and relative (%) carcass lean meat content increased (P &lt; 0.05). RAC inclusion also decreased (P &lt; 0.05) backfat thickness and the colour values a* and b* of finishing pigs. Therefore, on the basis of our results, it can be inferred that the best performance and carcass characteristics for finishing barrows reared at thermoneutral conditions were obtained at 1.030% and 0.730% Lys respectively, corresponding to an estimated daily Lys intake of 34.3 g and 24.2 g, independently of the diet RAC concentration.
