Projects have become an essential instrument for the success of universities. In a context of globalization and increasing complexity, they must sharpen their resourcefulness to face these challenges and adapt to this changing environment. To reach these objectives, they undertake a series of activities of a unique, concrete and temporary nature, not always technical but managerial ones. If universities work with people on projects in the production, transmission and dissemination of knowledge, then they link with society to solve its problems. For this reason, teaching and research staff (TRS) should promote a range of professional project management (PM) competences in different areas for the proper management of the projects in which they take part. Through a Delphi technique, a panel of twenty-four accredited teaching experts who are carrying out significant research and holding directive roles, measured the importance of acquiring and/or improving professional PM competences by their TRS. Consensus and stability reached after two rounds of consultation confirmed there are a series of crucial competences for the practice of relevant teaching and pioneer research. Results obtained are the basis for a gap plan that allows the TRS to participate in and/or lead university projects with greater self-confidence and personal motivation.

The teaching-learning process promoted by the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) calls for a new approach in which the student is the main actor of his/her learning. This implies an increase in the value of the teaching task, in general, and tutoring in particular. Tutoring reinforces the training process and the integral development of students. The main objective  of this study is to examine the opinion of university students about the use of academic tutoring in order to identify their needs and improve tutorial action. In the design of the study, the students were given a questionnaire to survey their personal attitudes and behavior toward tutorials, the extent to which they used tutorials and their effectiveness, and the level of communication and the relationship established with the teacher in the tutorials. The results, obtained from a sample of 322 students at the University of Zaragoza, Campus of Teruel, reveal four key points related to students’ self-confidence, perceived utility of the use of tutorials, personal motivation and financial and/or time cost (saving) that the students gain by attending tutorials. Although university students make only moderate use of tutorials, they emphasize the value of the tutorials as a stimulus to face the work required to pass a subject, as well as to optimize their study time.

Background and aim: Organisation of mass sports events is one of the functions of contemporary physical culture and, at the same time, a dynamically developing service, provided by both public and private institutions. Organising such an event requires a professional project-based approach, i.e. the conceptual preparation of activities related to its preparation, conduct and summing up. The aim of this study is to present project activities related to the organisation of a mass sports event, such as a marathon race, using the example of the 6th ‘Wrocław Marathon’. Material and methods: The subject matter of this study is an analysis of the system of project activities related to the organisation of mass sports events. Use was made for this purpose of the modern scientifi c discipline of project management and the following methods were applied: literature analysis, source documentation analysis and studies of 6 ‘Wrocław Marathon’ cases. Results: The following organisational phases of the ‘Wrocław Marathon’ were analysed in detail: event planning and preparation; implementation; controlling. Conclusions: Project management is a deliberate measure in the organisation of a mass event, such as the ‘Wrocław Marathon’ – development of a reference model of such an event.

Globalization urges the necessity of having world class leaders, and very frequently in its formation, is required to teach them computational tools to mainly improve their project management facilities. In order to give project management a greater quality, a very important point is to control and follow up all users’ diverse requirements, from the beginning to the end of each or any type of project: administrative, academic, engineering, software, video games, virtual and mixed reality, etc. This research shows a project requirements manager’s approach which allows knowing the specific requirements in each of its phases and give an advanced description of its various types and their traceability. This prototype promotes project requirement management best practices, and link them to the various areas of engineering, administration, planning and also with society, industry, commerce and academic sectors.

In the current competitive working environment time has become the key resource therefore universities must be able to satisfy higher education needs by enabling students to obtain as many professional skills and knowledge as possible. One of the solutions is to develop online studies by organising the language courses on the internet and by supplementing in-class courses with online study materials. The goal of this work is to research the opportunities a foreign languages’ competence for professional project management in Latvia. Research materials on foreign language teaching methods and applicable IC technological aspects were gathered, and a survey was completed and its results analysed to find out the opinions and attitude towards learning online from second foreign language students and people studying independently. During the work it was discovered that applying the new technologies positively influences the students’ willingness to study the foreign language independently. Focusing on students’ motivation on autonomous study style, online studies have a potential and opportunity to be applied and developed for higher education study program expansions.

The paradigm that assumes the autonomous management of universities involves them in the redefinition of their policies and processes and the training of their staff, designing new formulas that allow them to adapt to a changing environment. In this context, research and sustainable universities can link with society to solve its problems and influence a responsible and sustainable development. Through a Delphi panel, importance to acquire and improve project management (PM) competences by teaching and research staff (TRS) into innovating education and research projects is measured, from the standard of individual competences (ICB4) of the International Project Management Association (IPMA). Also, internal data sources from the flexible structures of two Spanish universities (the University of Cadiz (UCA) and the Technical University of Madrid (UPM)), are investigated, in order to analyze how they are organized. Thanks to the study of cases, an increasing tendency to work by projects is observed, empowering teams, managing properly stakeholders and facilitating their functions towards society. Likewise, after two rounds of experts’ consultation, consensus is reached with an acceptable and stable level of responses, resulting in confirmation that there is alignment between IPMA competences and TRS’ needs for sustained success in education and research, contributing to universities’ development, improvement and sustainability.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to bring together the findings of two studies investigating the value of academic libraries to teaching and research staff in higher education institutions. The Working Together (WT) project was an international study, funded by SAGE Publishing, investigating the value of academic libraries for teaching and research staff in the USA, UK and Scandinavia. The Raising Academic Impact (RAI) project was an initiative of the University of Nottingham (UoN) aimed at increasing the impact of academic librarians in departments across the university by assessing perception and awareness of current library services and future needs of academic staff. Design/methodology/approach – The WT project was conducted during Spring 2012, comprising a series of eight case studies and an online survey exploring the case study experiences and findings within their wider regional and academic context. One was conducted at the UoN, and included the RAI project. The RAI project was originally a four-phase initiative conducted by academic librarians at the UoN. The first phase, which is reported in this paper, consisted of a survey of teaching and research staff, distributed in summer 2012, investigating awareness, uptake and value of existing services, as well as demand for new library services. Findings – Determining the value of academic libraries is a challenging task as very little evidence (beyond the anecdotal) is collected. Perceptions of library value vary greatly between what librarians think the value of their library is to academic staff and how academic staff actually value their library. Information literacy and study skills teaching are greatly valued by academic staff. Despite current efforts, research support is still limited, owing to a cultural barrier hampering greater collaboration between libraries and academic staff in this area. Communication and marketing are keys to increase the value of academic libraries to teaching and research staff. Originality/value – This paper presents the key findings from the two studies in parallel. It is anticipated that these discoveries will be of interest to the wider library community to help libraries develop services which are closely linked to the needs of teaching and academic staff.
