γ-FeOOH nanorods an adsorbent for As(V) and As(III) removal was prepared by a chemical co-precipitation method. The maximum adsorption capacities at pH6 for As(V) and As(III) were 63.75 and 88.99 mg/g, respectively, higher than those of Fe2O3, Fe3O4... The adsorption data accorded with Freundlich isotherms. At the study pH, for arsen, the adsorption equilibrium was gained after 90 min. Kinetic data fitted well to the pseudo-second-order reaction model. The adsorption of γ-FeOOH for As (V) and As(III) could be competed by some other ion such as sulfate, ammonium and chloride. The high adsorption capability and good performance on other aspects make the γ-FeOOH nanorod a promissing adsorbent for the removal of As (V) and As(III) from the groundwater.

Super-paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs)/gelatin (gel)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanoparticles were designed and synthesized by the co-precipitation method and further modified with gel and PVA. These nanoparticles were used for the removal of Cu(II) and Zn(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were rich in different functional groups for chemisorption and showed effective adsorption properties. The adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) on the SPIONs/gel and SPIONs/gel/PVA materials were investigated with respect to pH, adsorption kinetics, and adsorption isotherms. The adsorption data was fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips models at the optimum pH 5.2 (±0.2) over 60 min; SPIONs/gel showed maximum adsorption capacities of 47.594 mg/g and 40.559 mg/g for Cu(II) and Zn(II); SPIONs/gel/PVA showed those of 56.051 mg/g and 40.865 mg/g, respectively. The experimental data fitted the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that the process followed chemical monolayer adsorption. In addition, the SPIONs/gel/PVA showed better stability and Cu(II) adsorption efficiency than SPIONs/gel.

Zr-γ-FeOOH nanoparticle adsorbent for As(V) and As(III) removal was prepared by a chemical co-precipitation method. Compared with γ-FeOOH, the addition of Zr enhanced the adsorptive capacities of As(V) and As(III). The maximum adsorptive capacities for As(V) and As(III) were 69.81 and 94.25 mg/g, respectively (rate Fe:Zr =1:0.5) at pH= 7.0. The adsorption data accorded with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption of As(III) by Zr- γ-FeOOH was found to be effective in wide pH range of 6–8. Competitive ions hindered the adsorption according to the decreasing sequence phosphate, sulfate, ammonium, chloride, magnesium and calcium. The high adsorptive capability and good performance on other aspects make the Zr-γ- FeOOH nanorods a promissing adsorbent for the removal of As(V) and As(III) from groundwater.

The adsorption of Cu2 +  from aqueous solution by magnetite-immobilised chitin (MC) was studied in batch mode. Two conventional adsorbents, cation exchange resin (CER) and activated carbon (AC) were used for the comparison. The physicochemical parameters including pH, concentration of adsorbent, temperature and initial Cu2 +  concentration were optimised. Under the optimised conditions, the removal efficiencies of Cu2 +  for MC, CER and AC were 91.67, 93.36 and 89.16%, respectively. In addition, the removal capacities of Cu2 +  for MC, CER and AC were 56.71, 74.84 and 6.55 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption isotherm studies indicated that the adsorptive behaviour of Cu2 +  on three adsorbents could be well described by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities (qmax) for MC, CER and AC were 53.19, 89.29 and 5.82 mg/g, respectively. The applicability of the kinetic model has been investigated for MC. Experimental results indicated that a pseudo-second-order reaction model provided the best description of the data with a correlation coefficient 0.999 for different initial Cu2 +  concentrations. The rate constants were also determined. Various thermodynamic parameters such as standard free energy (ΔG0), enthalpy (ΔH0) and entropy (ΔS0) were calculated for predicting the adsorption nature of MC. The results indicated that this system was a spontaneous and endothermic process.

γ-FeOOH, α-FeOOH, γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3 nanoparticle adsorbents for As(V) and As(III) removal were prepared by a chemical coprecipitation method. In the XRD diagrams the oxides appeared in the form of γ-FeOOH, α-FeOOH, γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3. These typical SEM images of the prepared samples were shown, which reveal that the nanoparticles were about 15 –30 nm. The maximum adsorption capacities of α- FeOOH for As(V) and As(III) were 77.28 and 78.65 mg/g; and γ-FeOOH were 63.75 and 88.99 mg/g respectively and higher than those of γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3 at pH= 6.0. The adsorption data accorded with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The high adsorption capability and good performance on other aspects make the FeOOH nano particles being a promising adsorbent for the removal of As(V) and As(III) from groundwater.

Co2[Fe(CN)6]/Fe3O4 nanoparticle adsorbent for ion cesium (Cs+) sorption was prepared by a chemical co-precipitation method. The magnetization of the materials makes them to be separated easyly from an aqueous solution by an external magnetic field. The ion Cs+ absorption by Co2[Fe(CN)6]/Fe3O4 nanoparticle follow the ion exchange mechanism, ion exchange capacity depends on the pH, the maximum ion exchange capacity of the material at pH = 4 is 0.40 meq (Cs+)/ g. After 15 min, about 98% of initial ion Cs+ concentration was removed from the solution, the adsorption could be described by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The high adsorption capacity and good performance on other aspects, make the Co2[Fe(CN)6]/Fe3O4 nanoparticle a promissing adsorbent for the removal of ion Cs+ from water.

Preventing diseases is deemed to be the major goal of our century especially when an excessive fluoride in drinking water can cause dental fluorosis, bone stiffness, rheumatism and skeletal fluorosis. Fluoride uptake from groundwater implies a worldwide multidisciplinary effort in order to develop renewable, cheap, human friendly materials. Among other materials, hydrotalcites could be good candidates for an efficient fluoride removal from water due to their adsorption, anion exchange and reconstruction properties. These nanostructured materials were synthesized using co-precipitation method in controlled conditions. Presence of anions in the interlayer structure and morphological aspects were performed by FTIR and SEM techniques. Thermal treatment of hydrotalcites showed good adsorption capacities for water defluoridation mostly due to their tendency to restore the original structure.

In this study, Fe3O4-ZrO2 functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (Fe3O4-ZrO2@APS) nanocomposite was investigated as a nanoadsorbent for the removal of Cd(II), Cu(II), Mn (II) and Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution and real samples in batch mode systems. The prepared magnetic nanomaterials were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersion x-ray (SEM/EDX) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Factors (such as adsorbent dose and sample pH) affecting the adsorption behavior of the removal process were studied using the response surface methodology. Under optimized condition, equilibrium data obtained were fitted into the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and the data fitted well with Langmuir isotherms. Langmuir adsorption capacities (mg/g) were found to be 113, 111, 128, and 123 mg/g for Cd, Cu, Ni and Mn, respectively. In addition, the adsorption kinetics was analyzed using five kinetic models, pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, intraparticle diffusion and Boyd models. The adsorbent was successfully applied for removal of Cd(II), Cu(II), Mn (II) and Ni(II) ions in wastewater samples.

Salicylic acid-modified magnetite (Mag-SA) and gallic acid-modified magnetite (Mag-GA) particles were prepared by co-precipitation procedure. Characterization results showed the interaction that occurs between the surface of magnetite with salicylic acid (Mag-SA) and gallic acid (Mag-GA) was through hydrogen bonding. Adsorption of [AuCl4]– onto Mag-SA and Mag-GA surfaces as a function of initial pH, contact time, and initial concentration of the [AuCl4]– solution were comparatively investigated. Result showed that the optimum adsorption of [AuCl4]– onto Mag-SA or Mag-GA was found at pH 3. The adsorption process were found to allow the pseudo-second order equation, both for Mag-SA and Mag-GA. The parameters in isotherm adsorption equations conformed to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms very well for Mag-GA, but for Mag-SA, only conformed to the Langmuir isotherm very well. The result of this study demonstrate that the ability Mag-GA to adsorb [AuCl4]– higher than Mag-SA.

In this study, two improved versions of UiO-66 were successfully synthesised. Modified UiO-66 and UiO-66-Ce were characterised to confirm the integrity of the structure, the stability of functional groups on the surface and the thermal stability. Activated samples were used for removal harmful anionic dye (methyl orange) (MO) from wastewater. Batch adsorption process was relied to investigate the competition between those MOFs for removing MO from aqueous solution. Based on the results, at a higher initial concentration, the maximum MO uptake was achieved by UiO-66-Ce which was better than modified-UiO-66. They adsorbed 71.5 and 62.5 mg g-1 respectively. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were employed to simulate the experimental data. In addition, Pseudo first order and Pseudo second order equations were used to describe the dynamic behaviour of MO through the adsorption process. The high adsorption capacities on these adsorbents can make them promised adsorbents in industrial areas.

Biomorphic nano-hydroxyapatite (HAP) was fabricated by a co-precipitation method using cotton as bio-templates and employed in adsorptive removal of ofloxacin (OFL) and triclosan (TCS) that are two representative pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). The surface area and porosity, crystal phase, functional group, morphology and micro-structure of the synthesized HAP were characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller isotherm, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron macroscopic and transmission electron microscopy. The effects of initial pH, ionic strength, initial concentration, contact time and temperature on the removal of PPCPs were studied in a batch experiment. The adsorption of OFL and TCS was rapid and almost accomplished within 50 min. Kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption process of OFL and TCS followed the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. The Freundlich isotherm described the OFL adsorption process well but the adsorption of TCS fitted the Langmuir isotherm better. Thermodynamics and isotherm parameters suggested that both OFL and TCS adsorption were feasible and spontaneous. Hydrogen bond and Lewis acid–base reaction may be the dominating adsorption mechanism of OFL and TCS, respectively. Compared to other adsorbents, biomorphic HAP is environmentally friendly and has the advantages of high adsorption capacity, exhibiting potential application for PPCPs removal.
