The job of the teacher of Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) requires the ability to teach learners of diverse profiles. Diversity of target groups in training entails diversity of language and learning needs. This paper aims to answer the question: how should LSP teachers be educated so that they can fulfil these needs and expectations? It is suggested that this can be done by preparing and implementing a suitable teaching pro-gramme which takes into account the specific character of different edu-cational contexts. The reflections presented here are based on analysis of the Polish educational situation in LSP training. On the basis of these ob-servations, several practice-oriented proposals will be formulated, which could be implemented in the process of language teacher training. Con-sideration is given, among other issues, to the pedagogical instruction that future LSP teachers need (which depends on the educational context of their future work), the scope of specialist knowledge in the given field that they will find indispensable, and the amount of knowledge of discourse and genre analysis with which they have to be equipped.

(1) This is a subject to which very little study has been directed. The first to enunciate any proposition regarding it was Jacobi; but the solitary result which he reached received no attention from mathematicians,—certainly no fruitful attention,—during seventy years following the publication of it.Jacobi was concerned with a problem regarding the partition of a fraction with composite denominator (u1 − t1) (u2 − t2) … into other fractions whose denominators are factors of the original, where u1, u2, … are linear homogeneous functions of one and the same set of variables. The specific character of the partition was only definable by viewing the given fraction (u1−t1)−1 (u2−t2)−1…as expanded in series form, it being required that each partial fraction should be the aggregate of a certain set of terms in this series. Of course the question of the order of the terms in each factor of the original denominator had to be attended to at the outset, since the expansion for (a1x+b1y+c1z−t)−1 is not the same as for (b1y+c1z+a1x−t)−1. Now one general proposition to which Jacobi was led in the course of this investigation was that the coefficient ofx1−1x2−1x3−1…in the expansion ofy1−1u2−1u3−1…, whereis |a1b2c3…|−1, provided that in energy case the first term of uris that containing xr.

The given article provides an analysis of collective discursive personalities of members of Internet fan communities which are devoted to performers working in two different music styles – pop and metal. Such kind of communicative interaction forms a unique discourse – the discourse of music fan Internet community which combines features of both subcultural group discourse (as the reason which led to the formation of the very fan community) and Internet discourse itself (as the environment for the given discourse). Through the use of content analysis method the authors find out both typical and specific psychological and cognitive features which fan community members implement during communication in the given discourse. These features include different ways of perception (visual vs. audial), major mindsets, emotionality level, etc. The main way of perception which is represented in the texts of conversations between pop music fan community members turns to be a visual one, while metal music fans are likely to have the audial way of perception as a major one. In the given discourse these features are represented by word groups of different perception semantics which are used by community members and belong to different parts of speech. The analysis of conversations in both fan groups demonstrates that concrete thinking could be characterized as a main way of thinking for fans of two aforementioned music styles. It is represented within the vocabulary and grammatical features used. Conversations between music fans of both types could be also characterized by a heightened emotionality level which directly depends on the specific character of music fanaticism. This specific character is based on over-positive attitude to favourite artists. The special attention is given to the system of language means which help to form general emotional background during communication process.

AbstractThe paper describes a teacher-training course on the use of corpora in language education offered to graduate students at the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw. It also presents the results of two questionnaires distributed to the students prior to and after the second edition of the course. The main aims of the course are: to introduce students to the concept of a corpus and its analysis; to familiarize them with a range of available corpora, corpus-based resources and tools; and to demonstrate to them various applications of corpora in language education, with special emphasis placed on the in-house preparation of courses, teaching materials and class activities. In the first part of the paper, the design, the syllabus, the progression and the outcomes of the course are outlined. In the second part, the responses of thirteen students who participated in the second edition of the course are analysed. The analysis indicates that on the whole the students reacted positively to the course and they saw the benefits of corpus-based materials and tools in language teaching. Yet the students also reported that they needed more time to gain full command of the resources and software presented and more guidance on the pedagogical issues related to corpus use. The paper concludes that fourteen sessions, designed as an overview of the whole range of corpus-based resources and applications, is not sufficient to encourage teacher trainees to use corpora in their future work if they have no contact with these resources and tools in other classes. Only extensive exposure to corpora by future teachers coupled with suitable teacher training in the applications of corpora in language education may bring a substantial change in the scope of corpus use in language classrooms in the wide educational context.

The application of statistics in extreme events detection is quite diverse and leads to diverse formulations, which needs to be designed for the specific problem. Each formula needs to be tailored specifically to work with the available data in the given situation. This diversity is one of the driving forces of this survey towards identifying the most common mixture of components utilized in the analysis of environmental outlier detection. Indeed for some arbitrary applications, it may not always be possible to use off-the-shelf models due to the wide variations in problem formulations. In this paper, we summarize the statistical methods involved in the detection of environmental extremes such as wind ramps, high precipitation and extreme temperatures. Then we organize the discussion along different outlier detection types, present various outlier definitions, and briefly introduce the corresponding techniques. Environmental extreme events detection challenges and possible future work are also discussed.

Studies of Language for specific purposes (LSP) aim to mastering particular terms of the target discourse community in the given field of knowledge. This cannot be achieved without comprehending the concepts denoted by the terms and their generic-specific relations which is not always the case in popular usage by media and translation. The given research is a small-scale analysis of conceptualisation and denotation of bribery offences in different legal settings (the international conventions and three national legal systems – the UK, Lithuanian and Russian) intended to expose the way of circumnavigating non-equivalency for LSP/ESP (English for Specific Purposes) learners. Firstly, bribery concepts in two international conventions are analysed and their terminological denotations in English, Lithuanian and Russian versions of the conventions are extracted. Secondly, functional equivalents of the international bribery concepts (the generic concept of bribery and the concepts forming the dichotomies of bribery types and forms) in the UK, LT and RU national legal settings are determined. Finally, terminological counterparts denoting the bribery concepts in the investigated legal settings are established. The analysis is performed using the methodology of contrastive conceptual analysis which focuses on logical relationship among the concepts, namely hierarchical genus-species relations, in lexical semantics referred to as hyper-hyponymic relations. The methodology enables to compare conceptualisation and denotation of bribery offences in three LSP have and highlight their incongruities. The procedure and the results described in the paper are believed to be valuable to the learners and teachers of LSP/ESP, to the translators and could enhance efficient international professional communication.Key words: conceptual-terminological system, non-equivalence, legal terminology, bribery

The purpose of our paper is to study a class of left-invariant, drift-free optimal control problem on the Lie group ISO(3,1). The left-invariant, drift-free optimal control problems involves finding a trajectory-control pair on ISO(3,1), which minimize a cost function and satisfies the given dynamical constrains and boundary conditions in a fixed time. The problem is lifted to the cotangent bundle T*G using the optimal Hamiltonian on G*, where the maximum principle yields the optimal control. We use energy methods (Arnold’s method, in this case) to give sufficient conditions fornonlinear stability of the equilibrium states. Around this equilibrium states we might be able to find the periodical orbits using Moser's theorem, as future work. For the some unstable equilibrium states, a quadratic control is considered in order to stabilize the dynamics.

The topic of English loanwords is discussed in various fields like, e.g. in linguistics or translatology. Translators are responsible for choosing adequate words in their translations so they often decide for the forms which seem to be the most appropriate for the given context. Education of future translators is highly challenging and demanding as students need to get general knowledge and practice for their future work. This study deals with the use of English loanwords and their different forms in Slovak journalistic texts. It presents the views of Slovak linguists on foreign words coming into the Slovak language, and shows how English loanwords are perceived by students of translation studies (N = 39) and professional translators (N = 21). These specific groups of language users tend to use loanwords when looking for adequate solutions in the process of translation, regarding different aspects of translation. Students and translators tend to use assimilated forms of English loanwords instead of their original forms and when considering the appropriate form of a loanword, they primarily take into account the reader and the comprehensibility of the text. The research findings show there is not a universal insight into the topic in the groups of students and translators so education in this area is inevitable.
