Within the terms of multilevel training the to-be-economists are being taught to solve complex problems, comprising such tasks, as the analysis, forecasting and decision making in the real world. At that, the training standards place the main emphasis on the learners ability to apply knowledge, skills and personal qualities (i.e. competences) in future professional activities, rather than on the educational content to be mastered. Competence-based approach is shaped through mastering various disciplines in the course of solving cross-disciplinary tasks. Of such nature are the cases, while the whole instrumental toolkit for mastering cases relies on the case-study method, or case-method. The authors assume, that the competences, stipulated by the Advanced Mathematics curriculum for bachelors in Economics, can be developed by means of the above mentioned case-method. The experiment, aimed at teaching the fi rst-year students of the Financial University, as described in the paper, is based on implementing the competence- based approach in training the to-be-economists.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify major challenges that Asia-Pacific policy makers face in drawing up international logistics policies, and to seek possible solutions to the problems. Design/methodology/approach – Case study method: the paper includes seven case studies that attempt to address various types of logistics challenges. The paper introduces both intra- and extra-regional examples of the ways in which those challenges have been overcome in particular contexts through concerted action by government and the private sector. Findings – There are a lot of interesting experiences of overcoming logistics challenges, both inside and outside the Asia-Pacific region. Good practice experiences can be replicated by other countries in the region. Originality/value – While there have been a lot of discussions on logistics policy reforms, this paper is one of the first attempts that clearly link challenges with concrete case experiences where those are overcome. The paper discusses very practical issues in an analytically sound manner, using case method.

Case study researchers use diverse methods to select their cases, a matter that has elicited considerable comment and no little consternation. Of all these methods, perhaps the most controversial is the crucial-case method, first proposed by Harry Eckstein several decades ago. Since Eckstein’s influential essay, the crucial-case approach has been used in a multitude of studies across several social science disciplines and has come to be recognized as a staple of the case study method. Yet the idea of any single case playing a crucial (or critical) role is not widely accepted. In this article, the method of the crucial case is explored, and a limited defense (somewhat less expansive than that envisioned by Eckstein) of that method is undertaken. A second method of case-selection, closely associated with the logic of the crucial case, is introduced: the pathway case.

The article presents the reasons and results of case-study usage as a method of humanitarian research. The method of case-study is displayed not only in education but also as a research methodology realized through the research program. The article presents the interpretation of the humanitarian research and the research case. The realization of the part of Humanitarian school research is described as an educational event used with the method of case-study. The article gives the analysis fragments of research cases (reflexive texts) of students-participants of the educational event. Reflexion with the case-method usage performs two roles: as the means of the educational event organization and as the means of humanitarian research. A Humanitarian school is considered to be a precedent and a phenomenon of the educational event. The article contains conclusions about the essential potential of case-study method for the humanitarian research.

The article focuses on the role of interactive methods in teaching students of economic areas of training, in particular, on the example of the analysis of the introduction of the case method into the teaching methodology. The objectives of the study were to consider the features of modern schools in Europe in the use of the case method; to analyze approaches to the use of the method in foreign countries. The advantages of the case study method over other teaching methods are listed, and the importance of the method in the formation of necessary competencies in teaching students is determined. The article analyzes the experience of implementing the case method in the teaching of economic disciplines. The study reveals the main advantages of using European methods of using the case format in a Russian university. The article determines that the case method can be a powerful tool in the development of critical thinking in future economists. At the same time, the importance of a comprehensive approach when using the method under study is emphasized.

Reducing the gap between professional opportunities of graduates of medical education institutions and needs of patients is the priority of medical education. The introduction of interactive methods, in particular the case study method, can help solve this problem. The aim of this study was to investigate how the application of the case method in medical education affects the learning outcomes of students and acquisition of practical experience. Case method was used to identify its impact on the acquisition of practical skills, abilities and clinical experience by future physicians. Students’ opinions on the effectiveness of the case method in gaining practical experience were surveyed. The study showed that the case method helped students find solutions required by clinical situations, as they used not only theoretical knowledge, but also acquired practical skills and clinical experience. The case method also increases students’ confidence in their professional abilities. This experimental study proved the high efficiency of using the case method in medical education to gain practical experience by students in the education institution. It can be useful for scholars and educators who are looking for, developing and implementing effective teaching methods that allow students to acquire the necessary competencies.

The purpose of this study is to provide an alternative for teachers in preparing teaching materials adapted to track students' mathematics learning in the classroom. This study is a qualitative research with case study method with data collection is a triangulation technique that focuses on 13 people of 5th grade elementary school teacher. The results showed that Hyphotetical Learning Trajectory greatly assist teachers in planning their mathematics teachings, especially in developing teaching materials in a coherent, logical, contextual, and cutting-edge, so that the learning is given to more effectively and efficiently. It was also revealed that the practice of teaching mathematics teacher in the classroom along with lesson plans they have prepared beforehand. Based on the implementation of Hyphotetical Learning Trajectory on mathematics teachers, it can be concluded that the knowledge and skills of teachers in teaching mathematics were well developed; the materials presented are in-depth; it can identify students’ learning; it can anticipate the strategy, representation, and misconceptions of students, so that it can provide an inclusive appropriate the learning needs of their students.

This article reviews the case study research in the operations management field. In this regard, the paper’s key objective is to represent a general framework to design, develop, and conduct case study research for a future operations management research by critically reviewing relevant literature and offering insights into the use of case method in particular settings. To achieve our objective, a systematic literature review (SLR) was considered in one of the best OM journals in 1990–2018. This study represents a general structure to guide, design, and fulfill a case study research with categorized steps necessary for researchers to use in their research.

The concepts of the case method are considered. An analysis of the types of cases is given. The features of the use of interactive technology by the case-study method in the professional practice of teaching design are revealed. The method of situational analysis is described in relation to the development of a design project for the discipline “Fundamentals of Production Skills”. An algorithm of interaction between a teacher and students is presented, the structure and principles of building a case on a practical example are revealed.

An experiment on the value of the case study method was carried out at the University of Stuttgart in the Federal Republic of Germany, to ascertain whether the case study method was superior to the traditional teaching methods, especially with a view to increasing requests that university education should be more practice-related. The main deficiencies of traditional business teaching methods are indicated, as well as the perceived satisfaction and importance of the basic needs as seen by a number of students. In the experiment five business administration and five engineering students were used, while a large business firm and some of its sub-contractors gave feedback from the business world itself. Towards the end of the experiment the students' opinions on the value of the case method compared with traditional teaching methods was obtained by means of anonymous questionnaires. They rated the case study method as substantially superior with regard to increasing knowledge, and to improving both technical and inter-personal competence. The same conclusions were drawn as to the affective area of learning, including increased and better satisfied intrinsic motivation to achieve, and to cooperate in small task groups.
