Case study researchers use diverse methods to select their cases, a matter that has elicited considerable comment and no little consternation. Of all these methods, perhaps the most controversial is the crucial-case method, first proposed by Harry Eckstein several decades ago. Since Eckstein’s influential essay, the crucial-case approach has been used in a multitude of studies across several social science disciplines and has come to be recognized as a staple of the case study method. Yet the idea of any single case playing a crucial (or critical) role is not widely accepted. In this article, the method of the crucial case is explored, and a limited defense (somewhat less expansive than that envisioned by Eckstein) of that method is undertaken. A second method of case-selection, closely associated with the logic of the crucial case, is introduced: the pathway case.

Reducing the gap between professional opportunities of graduates of medical education institutions and needs of patients is the priority of medical education. The introduction of interactive methods, in particular the case study method, can help solve this problem. The aim of this study was to investigate how the application of the case method in medical education affects the learning outcomes of students and acquisition of practical experience. Case method was used to identify its impact on the acquisition of practical skills, abilities and clinical experience by future physicians. Students’ opinions on the effectiveness of the case method in gaining practical experience were surveyed. The study showed that the case method helped students find solutions required by clinical situations, as they used not only theoretical knowledge, but also acquired practical skills and clinical experience. The case method also increases students’ confidence in their professional abilities. This experimental study proved the high efficiency of using the case method in medical education to gain practical experience by students in the education institution. It can be useful for scholars and educators who are looking for, developing and implementing effective teaching methods that allow students to acquire the necessary competencies.

Within the terms of multilevel training the to-be-economists are being taught to solve complex problems, comprising such tasks, as the analysis, forecasting and decision making in the real world. At that, the training standards place the main emphasis on the learners ability to apply knowledge, skills and personal qualities (i.e. competences) in future professional activities, rather than on the educational content to be mastered. Competence-based approach is shaped through mastering various disciplines in the course of solving cross-disciplinary tasks. Of such nature are the cases, while the whole instrumental toolkit for mastering cases relies on the case-study method, or case-method. The authors assume, that the competences, stipulated by the Advanced Mathematics curriculum for bachelors in Economics, can be developed by means of the above mentioned case-method. The experiment, aimed at teaching the fi rst-year students of the Financial University, as described in the paper, is based on implementing the competence- based approach in training the to-be-economists.

An experiment on the value of the case study method was carried out at the University of Stuttgart in the Federal Republic of Germany, to ascertain whether the case study method was superior to the traditional teaching methods, especially with a view to increasing requests that university education should be more practice-related. The main deficiencies of traditional business teaching methods are indicated, as well as the perceived satisfaction and importance of the basic needs as seen by a number of students. In the experiment five business administration and five engineering students were used, while a large business firm and some of its sub-contractors gave feedback from the business world itself. Towards the end of the experiment the students' opinions on the value of the case method compared with traditional teaching methods was obtained by means of anonymous questionnaires. They rated the case study method as substantially superior with regard to increasing knowledge, and to improving both technical and inter-personal competence. The same conclusions were drawn as to the affective area of learning, including increased and better satisfied intrinsic motivation to achieve, and to cooperate in small task groups.
