Twenty open-pollinated families of jack pine (Pinusbanksiana Lamb.) were grown for 16 to 21 months in two different greenhouse regimes, one providing an extended growing season with natural photoperiod and one employing control of temperature and photoperiod to accelerate growth cycles. Height measurements during and at the end of greenhouse growth were compared with height of 7-year-old seedlings of the same families growing in field tests. For both greenhouse regimes, height at the end of the second growth cycle was positively correlated with 7-year field height. Greenhouse measurements correctly classified the majority of families into upper and lower groups based on field heights. Early family selection in jack pine appears to have applications in long-term breeding strategies.

Sweet orange trees, cv. Late Valencia, 6 m in height were moderately pruned in the spring of 1969, up to 8 % of the canopy being removed. Over 2 years, three or four growth cycles were completed. The amount of regrowth was correlated with the size of the first growth cycle flush after pruning, and this was correlated with the diameter of the pruned branch. No flowers were found on regrowths 1 year after pruning; only 75% of regrowths produced flowers 2 years after pruning, and only 50 % produced fruit. Small plants (rooted cuttings) were used to investigate pruning responses in the phytotron. Low temperatures (18/13�C) immediately after pruning for 8 weeks resulted in smaller first growth cycle flushes after pruning, and even after transfer to warm (27/22�) conditions the original height was not regained after three growth cycles. Plants that received cool conditions after the first or second growth cycles regained their original height after the third growth cycle. The amount of regrowth was correlated with the length of the first growth cycle flushes, which was correlated with the original height of the plants and the height after pruning. Flowers could not be induced on the old wood after pruning or on the first growth cycle flushes, and only few flowers were formed in the second growth cycle flushes. Many inflorescences were produced on third growth cycle flushes following inductive conditions (18/13�C) for 8 weeks. Light pruning of less vigorous plants did not inhibit subsequent flowering. The practical implications of this work are discussed. Moderate pruning will remove part of two crops, not one, because of the inability of regrowth flushes to flower until several growth cycles have formed. The tree relatively quickly replaces the growth removed, and this depends on the vigour of the first growth cycle flushes after pruning. Pruning in autumn or winter would be expected to result in less vigorous regrowth. Our lack of knowledge on the pruning responses of orange trees is emphasized, with suggestions for future practical investigations.

Regional growth and supply projections under selected management alternatives are crucial in planning necessary steps to meet increasing demands on a shrinking timber resource base. Knowledge about the growth and stocking conditions of second-growth stands is essential in such long-term projections especially if large geographical areas are considered. Two second-growth stocking assumptions were selected to illustrate the effect of stocking on management variables for the jack pine (Pinusbanksiana Lamb.) inventory of northwestern Wisconsin and to indicate plausible ranges for future growth, growing stock, and harvest volumes. These stocking effects were studied in a deterministic environment and with the occurrence of stochastic infestations of jack pine budworm (Choristoneurapinuspinus Freeman). The analysis illustrated the strong sensitivity of system's variables to assumptions about stocking for two contrasting rotation alternatives. The sensitivity of the model was increased considerably when budworm infestations were simulated because jack pine budworm populations movements are strongly influenced by the stocking conditions of the host stand. Policies were identified for which more reliable projections of minimum expected growth and yields are possible than for presently-used policies for jack pine in the Lake States.

The estimation of pasture productivity is of great interest for the management of animal grazing. The standard method of assessing pasture mass requires great effort and expense to collect enough samples to accurately represent a pasture. This work presents the results of a long-term study to calibrate a Grassmaster II capacitance probe to estimate pasture productivity in two phases: (i) the calibration phase (2007–2018), which included measurements in 1411 sampling points in three parcels; and (ii) the validation phase (2019), which included measurements in 216 sampling points in eight parcels. A regression analysis was performed between the capacitance (CMR) measured by the probe and values of pasture green matter and dry matter (respectively, GM and DM, in kg ha−1). The results showed significant correlations between GM and CMR and between DM and CMR, especially in the early stages of pasture growth cycle. The analysis of the data grouped by classes of pasture moisture content (PMC) shows higher correlation coefficients for PMC content >80% (r = 0.775; p < 0.01; RMSE = 4806 kg ha−1 and CVRMSE = 28.1% for GM; r = 0.750; p < 0.01; RMSE = 763 kg ha−1 and CVRMSE = 29.7% for DM), with a clear tendency for the accuracy to decrease when the pasture vegetative cycle advances and, consequently, the PMC decreases. The validation of calibration equations when PMC > 80% showed a good approximation between GM or DM measured and GM or DM predicted (r = 0.959; p < 0.01; RMSE = 3191 kg ha−1; CVRMSE = 23.6% for GM; r = 0.953; p <0.01; RMSE = 647 kg ha−1 and CVRMSE = 27.3% for DM). It can be concluded that (i) the capacitance probe is an expedient tool that can enable the farm manager to estimate pasture productivity with acceptable accuracy and support the decision-making process in the management of dryland pastures; (ii) the more favorable period for the use of this probe in dryland pastures in a Mediterranean climate, such as the Portuguese Alentejo, coincides with the end of winter and beginning of spring (February–March), corresponding to PMC > 80%.

Abstract The aim of this work was to develop a red clover variety adapted to agro-climatic conditions of Latvia, suitable for different requirements of forage producers, resistant to most widespread diseases and producing high seed yield annually. Medium late ripening diploid red clover variety ‘Jancis’ was created at the LLU Research Institute of Agriculture in long-term work carried out since 1985. After free pollination of best samples of red clover collections from the VIR (St. Petersburg), individual and family selection among hybrids were carried out for approximately 20 years. Finally, best breeding line Nr. 43047 was registered as a variety ‘Jancis’. The variety is characterised by good winter hardiness, high dry matter yield (10-12 t·ha-1) and good persistence in the sward - up to 3-4 years. The variety is characterised by a long stem (90-110 cm) with 8-9 internodes, dark green leaves with a distinctive brighter picture, medium length and width of medial leaflet, and bright pink flower heads. ‘Jancis’ has stable annual seed yield in the conditions of Latvia; under favourable conditions reaching 500- 600 kg·ha-1 seeds. Since 2010, the variety ‘Jancis’ has been included in the common Latvian and EU Plant Variety Catalogue.

Ten-year height growth for Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr. was studied in a progeny test of 42 wind-pollinated families from seven stands on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. Although stand and family-within-stand effects were significant sources of variation, 79% of the phenotypic variance in 10-year height was associated with differences among trees within family plots. Estimates of heritability ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text]) indicate that a combination of stand, family-within-stand, and progeny-within-family selection will be effective for a long-term breeding program to increase tree heights in Sitka spruce.Key words: Picea, heritability, quantitative.

Petrobras developed a new kind of anchoring device known as Torpedo. This is a steel pile of appropriate weight and shape that is launched in a free fall procedure to be used as fixed anchoring point by any type of floating unit. There are two Torpedoes, T-43 and T-98 weighing 43 and 98 metric tons respectively. On October 2002 T-43 was tested offshore Brazil in Campos Basin. The successful results approved and certified by Bureau Veritas, and the need for a feasible anchoring system for new Petrobras Units in deep water fields of Campos Basin led to the development of a Torpedo with High Holding Power. Petrobras FPSO P-50, a VLCC that is being converted with a spread-mooring configuration will be installed in Albacora Leste field in the second semester of 2004. Its mooring analysis showed that the required holding power for the mooring system would be very high. Drag embedment anchors option would require four big Anchor Handling Vessels for anchor tensioning operations at 1400 m water depth. For this purpose T-98 was designed and its field tests were completed in April 2003. This paper discusses T-98 design, building, tests and ABS certification for FPSO P-50.

<p>Family takes important influences on the education of children's moral and personality development. Families especially parents are the main agencies to teach children new things as well as goodness or badness. Early family education should include three aspects namely cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects. In early family education, parents should impart honest behaving, polite speaking, and responsibility-taking. In this early family education, educational interaction occurs firstly and foremost to the children who would become the foundation of their further education. Cultivating children's attitudes should be carried out by school teachers. There are several roles that can be implemented by the teacher namely; as a model, mentor, coach, motivational speaker, and evaluator. The role of teachers as educators (nurturer) are the roles that are associated with the duties of assistance and encouragement (supporter), the tasks of supervision and coaching (supervisor) as well as tasks related to disciplining children the child was being well behaved against the school rules and norms of life in the family and society. By optimizing the role of parents and teachers in the cultivation of the attitude, then it will be able to reduce bullying behavior in early childhood. The children's experiences with bullying will give long term impacts. For the children having bullying victims, the experience will be a nightmare that never disappears from their memories. </p>

This paper examines the short and long-term co-movement of large  emerging market economies -- the BRICS countries -- by applying the  econometric techniques and the tests proposed in the common-feature literature. Despite their dissimilarities, given the rising trade linkages among the BRICS over the last 20 years one should expect their cycles to be  synchronized. Our empirical findings fully support this hypothesis. The evidence holds also for the co-movement between the BRICS and developed  economies, the US and the Eurozone, which may reflect the effects of  globalization.

Abstract Appropriate risk assessment plays a fundamental role in the design. . The authors propose a possible method of design risk mitigation, which follows recommendations included in Eurocode 7. The so-called “Observational Method” (OM) can produce savings in costs and programmes on engineering projects without compromising safety. The case study presented is a complex design solution that deals with the heavy foundations of a gantry crane beam as one of the elements of a Deepwater Container Terminal extension. The paper presents a detailed process of the design of the rear crane beam being a part of the brand new berth, together with its static analysis, as well as the long-term results of observations, which have revealed the real performance of the marine structure. The case presented is based on excessive preliminary field tests and technical monitoring of the structure, and is an example of a successful OM implementation and design risk mitigation.
