In the process of reconstructing buildings, engineering and geodetic surveys make it possible to obtain all the necessary information about the relief of the earth’s surface and constructed objects on the design site. The terms of the work and the volume of research determine the structure of the survey units. These parameters are influenced by the complexity of the design and construction of the object under study, so they should be reflected in the program of survey work. In this article, while conducting engineering and geodetic surveys for the purpose of designing the reconstruction of the laboratory building, field and office work was carried out, and a topographic plan of the object was drawn up. The information obtained during the topographic survey, which is part of the engineering and geodetic surveys, is used as a basis for further research, design and construction work.

This paper selects several representative penstocks codes of hydropower stations in China and foreign countries including USBR Standards (1970), ASCE Steel Penstocks (1993), Japanese Technical Standards for Gates and Penstocks (1993), the former USSR’s code My 34 747-76 and Π 780-83, and Chinese code DL/T 5141-2001; analyzes and compares their different design methods and corresponding safety levels. In addition, the probabilistic limit state design method adopted in DL/T 5141-2001 is described emphatically. What are described can be taken as reference by the engineering technicians who are engaged in the research, design and construction of steel penstocks for hydropower stations at home and abroad.

The weak electric organ discharges (EODs) of gymnotiform knife fishes can be readily amplified with a wideband amplifier connected to submerged electrodes. The output from such an amplifier can then be monitored with audio speakers or digitized for subsequent analysis. Commercially available devices are expensive and usually require mains electrical power. Here we provide design notes and instructions for the construction and calibration of a cheap, portable, battery-powered, AC-coupled wideband bio-amplifier. This device was designed to allow electric fishes to be located in the field, and also to permit the relatively noise-free acquisition of EOD waveforms from specimens held in temporary captivity. This contribution is intended to encourage students of neotropical ichthyology to explore electric signaling in gymnotiform fishes.

The main purpose of the textbook is to acquaint students and engineers with the principles of design and construction of buildings and structures in seismic areas. The tutorial sets out the basic principles of design and construction of frame, large-panel buildings, buildings with load-bearing walls made of small-piece stones and large blocks, buildings made of local materials, frameless buildings made of monolithic reinforced concrete. The design requirements for buildings in earthquake-prone areas are described, and the main requirements for the production of works and implementation of anti-seismic measures during construction are outlined. Architectural, construction, design and technological aspects of construction in seismic areas are revealed. Meets the requirements of Federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. It is intended for students studying in the areas of training 08.03.01 and 08.04.01 "Construction" in the following disciplines: "Design, construction and operation of buildings in seismic areas", "Theory and design of buildings and structures in seismic areas".

Quantity surveying firms (QSFs) in Nigeria are faced with numerous challenges and stiff competitions in the construction industry that have really threatened the growth and survival of the firms. Therefore, this study examined the current growth status of QSFs in Lagos and Ondo States, Nigeria. This was achieved by assessing some germane growth indicators of firms which include asset, profit, staffing, clients and so on. Descriptive research design was adopted through a census survey of all quantity surveying firms in the study area. Questionnaires were distributed to top management executives of the firms and the data adequately analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) to compare the growth indicators (at startup level and current level) and test statistic F was computed to test hypotheses. It was revealed that QSFs have not been experiencing growth in the number of employees, number of clients and asset owned by the firms. Furthermore, there is decrease in profit which is the indicator that most determines firm’s growth. Therefore, the study recommends that QSFs in Nigeria should maximize their profit level so that employees’ strength and salary are not affected since QSFs depends on the skill of quantity surveyors in order to succeed and survive.

The offshore development by Esso/BHP of the West Kingfish, Cobia, Fortescue and Flounder oil fields in the Gippsland Basin is one of the significant undertakings by the petroleum industry during the 1980s. Production from the fields will help sustain the current level of production from Bass Strait into the latter part of this decade. This paper examines some of the principal project management issues and actions involved in the planning and execution of the design and construction phases of the platforms and pipelines associated with each of these fields.

Qualitative case study research can be a valuable tool for answering complex, real-world questions. This method is often misunderstood or neglected due to a lack of understanding by researchers and reviewers. This tutorial defines the characteristics of qualitative case study research and its application to a broader understanding of stuttering that cannot be defined through other methodologies. This article will describe ways that data can be collected and analyzed.
