Protein interaction potential landscapes for yeast replicative aging

We proposed a novel interaction potential landscape approach to map the systems-level profile changes of gene networks during replicative aging in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This approach enabled us to apply quasi-potentials, the negative logarithm of the probabilities, to calibrate the elevation of the interaction landscapes with young cells as a reference state. Our approach detected opposite landscape changes based on protein abundances from transcript levels, especially for intra-essential gene interactions. We showed that essential proteins play different roles from hub proteins on the age-dependent interaction potential landscapes. We verified that hub proteins tend to avoid other hub proteins, but essential proteins prefer to interact with other essential proteins. Overall, we showed that the interaction potential landscape is promising for inferring network profile change during aging and that the essential hub proteins may play an important role in the uncoupling between protein and transcript levels during replicative aging.

Instagram as a tool for disseminating sustainable practices: an experience report

The social isolation promoted by COVID-19 impacts the routine and habits of families with a reflection on the characteristics and generation of solid waste and consumption of natural resources. This situation has been identified as an opportunity for educational institutions to promote awareness actions with their internal and external community as a contribution to reduce such effects. In order to disseminate sustainable practices related to the daily life of the pandemic and to evaluate responses, the group of teachers and students developed activities which contributed to minimize the effects of the pandemic. The ease and speed of social media was used as a tool for actions. The methodological steps were: survey of the existing contents in the official networks of the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo related to the topic of interest, the definition of the InstagramTM social network, profile creation for the Ifes Biotechnology and Sustainability Laboratory (Labiotecs), increase of followers, creation and dissemination of content and publications analysis. The work is based on the Deming Cycle methodology in order to optimize its planning and execution. Among the results, 179 followers on the profile were reached, 10 posts were shared in the feed, 4 questionnaires and 5 polls applied until 06/17/2020. The effectiveness of the work was shown through the reach of publications and public acceptance. Also, the Deming cycle proved to be adequate and capable of being replicated.

On social permeability of municipal borders

The article investigates the intensity of social interaction between the population of different municipalities in Russian Federation. This interaction is estimated using user profile data from online social networks: a data source that grows more and more popular in population geography studies. We build a qualitative indicator of social interaction using data on the number of interregional friendship links for «VKontakte» social network users that live in different municipalities and have an open social network profile. We show that the intensity of social interaction is higher on the average for municipalities that share a common border. Social interaction intensity data is then used to characterize the permeability of municipality borders. We choose the least permeable borders among all border segments of municipalities in Russian Federation: those with the smallest transborder interaction intensity values and describe the social barriers that are revealed this way. We describe various configurations of these barriers and suggest hypotheses for the reasons why such barriers appear or do not appear. We also analyze several groups of socially insular groups of municipalities in the Khanty- Mansi Autonomous Okrug and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and suggest possible reasons for their insularity.

How a Social Network Profile Affects Employers’ Impressions of the Candidate: An Application of Norm Evaluation

Employers have used social network sites (SNSs) to screen job candidates. However, the mechanism by which SNS posts shape employers’ impressions of the candidates is unclear in previous research. Two studies were conducted to examine how employers develop impressions of job candidates by evaluating their SNS profile against perceived organizational and societal injunctive norms (perceived organizational injunctive norms [POINs] and perceived societal injunctive norms [PSINs], respectively), through a 2 (SNS profile type: alcohol-free vs. alcohol-included) × 2 (industry: Catholic school vs. information technology [IT]) × 2 (gender-role perceptions based on candidate’s sex: male vs. female) between-subjects experiment design. Findings contribute to the scholarship on impression formation via SNSs by showing that individuals develop their impressions by evaluating how much the target SNS profile aligns with POINs. Specifically, an alcohol-included Facebook profile violated POINs and PSINs more than an alcohol-free profile. In addition, both studies found that the interaction effect between the profile and the industry on the extent to which the SNS profile aligned with POINs and PSINs was significantly different for the male and female candidate. This research offers practical implications about how to manage professional self-presentation on SNSs.

Explicating potential soil development of reclaimed farmlands using the molecular ecological network analysis in mining disturbed area, East China

<p>Understanding the interactions among different soil microbial species and how they responded to reclamation is essential to ecological restoration and the land development. In this study, we investigated the bacterial distribution in different reclamation sites and constructed molecular ecological networks to reveal the interactions among soil bacterial communities along the reclamation timeline. The relationship between the microbial network module and environmental factors were also analyzed. Bacterial community diversity and composition changed dramatically along the reclamation timeline. PCA and NMDS analysis showed the microbial distribution patterns varied along the reclamation years. Additionally, based on the network profile, phyla Acidobacteria, Planctomycetes and Proteobacteria were distinguished as the key microbial populations in most reclamation sites. Moreover, different network structures were significantly correlated with different soil properties, such as pH value, soil organic matter, soil dehydrogenase and urease activity, which implied that microbial network interactions might influence the soil ecological functions. The variation of the network complexity along the reclamation years revealed that the microbial development and the persistent agricultural utilization promoted the land development of the reclaimed soil in disturbed mining area. Overall, our findings could provide some information of how microorganisms changed along the increasing reclamation time, and how they responded to reclamation activity by regulating their interactions in different ecosystems.</p>
