Waste Collection Vehicle Routing Problem (WCVRP) is one of the developments of a Vehicle Routing Problem, which can solve the route determination of transporting waste. This study aims to develop a model from WCVRP by adding characteristics such as split delivery, multiple trips, time windows, heterogeneous fleet, and intermediate facilities alongside an objective function to minimize costs and travel distance. Our model determines the route for transporting waste especially in Cakung District, East Jakarta. The additional characteristics are obtained by analyzing the characteristics of waste transportation in the area. The models are tested using dummy data to analyze the required computational time and route suitability. The models contribute to determining the route of transporting waste afterward. The WCVRP model has been successfully developed, conducted the numerical testing, and implemented with the actual characteristics such as split delivery, multiple trips, time windows, heterogeneous fleets, and intermediate facilities. The output has reached the global optimal for both dummy and real data.

We consider the problem of utilizing the parcel locker network for the logistics solution in the metropolitan area. Two-echelon distribution systems are attractive from an economic standpoint, whereas the product from the depot can be distributed from or to intermediate facilities. In this case, the intermediate facilities are considered as locker facilities present in an accessible location in the vicinity of the final customers. In addition, the utilization of locker facilities can reduce the cost caused by the unattended deliveries. The problem is addressed as an optimization model that formulated into an integer linear programming model denoted as the two-echelon vehicle routing problem with locker facilities (2EVRP-LF). The objective is to minimize the cost of transportation with regards to the vehicle travelling cost, the intermediate facilities renting cost, and the additional cost to compensate the customer that needs to travel to access the intermediate facilities. Because of its complexity, a simulated annealing algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. On the other hand, the modelling approach can be conducted by generating two-phase optimization model approaches, which are the p-median problem and the capacitated vehicle routing problem. The results from both methods are compared in numerical experiments. The results show the effectiveness of 2EVRP-LF compared to the two-phase optimization. Furthermore, the simulated annealing algorithm showed an effective performance in solving 2EVRP-LF.

In many countries, municipal solid waste management is considered a very important challenge, and the most relevant costs in this field are dedicated to the collection process. Therefore, this study aimed to propose a mathematical model with multiple depots and multiple intermediate facilities to minimize fixed and variable costs of waste collection. Intermediate facilities are used in the developed countries in their waste collection network, because these facilities reduce the long-term costs of waste management and increase the quality of the waste collection process. Also, in reality, the amount of waste generated per day is not deterministic, so, to cope with the issue of uncertainty in the amount of waste, a fuzzy optimization approach was considered. Furthermore, a system where vehicles that could collect the wastes in multiple tours, with a maximum number of tours for each vehicle, was also considered. Due to the high complexity of this model, a genetic algorithm was elaborated. Further, the efficiency of the proposed algorithm was confirmed by comparison with the exact solution in small dimensions. It should be noted that the initial solution of this algorithm was obtained by a proposed heuristic algorithm. Finally, a case study on the vehicle routing of municipal solid waste was conducted in a district of Tehran, Iran. Moreover, the solutions of the model were validated by comparing the results of the proposed model and the current real-life situation. The contractors could improve vehicle routes and reduce costs by implementing the results of the proposed model, without any additional cost.

Cross-docking is a logistics management concept in which products are temporarily unloaded at intermediate facilities and loaded onto output trucks to be sent to their final destination. In this paper, we propose an approximate nonstationary queuing model to size the number of docks to receive the trucks, so that their unloading will be as short as possible at the receiving dock, thus making the cross-docking process more efficient. It is observed that the stochastic queuing process may not reach the steady equilibrium state. A type of modeling that does not depend on the stationary characteristics of the process developed is applied. In order to measure the efficiency, performance, and possible adjustments of the parameters of the algorithm, an alternative simulation model is proposed using the Arena® software. The simulation uses analytic tools to make the problem more detailed, which is not allowed in the theoretical model. The computational analysis compares the results of the simulated model with the ones obtained with the theoretical algorithm, considering the queue length and the average waiting time of the trucks. Based on the results obtained, the simulation represented very well the proposed problem and possible changes can be easily detected with small adjustments in the simulated model.
