AbstractCarbon nanoparticles (CNPs) are attractive materials for a great number of applications but there are serious concerns regarding their influence on health and environment. Here, our focus is on the behavior of fullerenes in lipid bilayers with varying lipid saturations, chain lengths and fullerene concentrations using coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CG-MD) simulations. Our findings show that the lipid saturation level is a key factor in determining how fullerenes behave and where the fullerenes are located inside a lipid bilayer. In saturated and monounsaturated bilayers fullerenes aggregated and formed clusters with some of them showing icosahedral structures. In polyunsaturated lipid bilayers, no such structures were observed: In polyunsaturated lipid bilayers at high fullerene concentrations, connected percolation-like networks of fullerenes spanning the whole lateral area emerged at the bilayer center. In other systems only separate isolated aggregates were observed. The effects of fullerenes on lipid bilayers depend strongly on fullerene aggregation. When fullerenes aggregate, their interactions with the lipid tails change.

The deep study of solvent annealed small molecules bulk heterojunction organic solar cells based on DPP(TBFu)2 : PC60BM blend is carried out. To reveal the reason of the solvent annealing advantage over the thermal one, capacitance-voltage measurements were applied. It was found that controlling the vertical phase segregation in the solar cells a high fullerene population in the vicinity of the cathode could be achieved. This results in increase of the shunt resistance of the cell, thus improving the light harvesting efficiency.

Narrow dispersity polymers with a high tethered fullerene content were synthesised by first polymerising poly(chloromethyl styrene) using reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerisation and subsequently functionalising them with pristine fullerene. The polymers comprised 52 % by weight fullerene, corresponding to approximately one fullerene per monomer in the polymer with a different morphology to poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT) : phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) systems. Bulk heterojunctions formed from the polymer tethered fullerene (PTF) with P3HT yielded functioning organic photovoltaic devices with power conversion efficiencies ranging from 0.0030 to 0.22 % as the PTF was increased from 1 : 0.8 to 1 : 1.3. Process optimisation resulted in a maximum efficiency of 0.4 %.
