This article explores the Orientalist dynamics of North/South sexual tourism in Laurent Cantet’s Vers le sud/Heading South (2005). The narrative of the film is structured around the self-interested motivations of three white middle-aged bourgeois Western women who travel from North America to Haiti in the late 1970s in order to explore their sexuality in what they perceive as an island paradise, effectively exiling themselves from the codified social behavior expected of them in their homeland. The women avail themselves of the pleasures offered by young black Haitian men, often in exchange for money or goods, and fuel one-sided fantasies of romantic love with their local hosts, seemingly oblivious to the Orientalist nature of such an imbalance of social and economic power. The article explores the historical context of the political repression and violence of late-1970s Haiti under the Duvalier regime, as well as the manifestations of spatial politics represented in the film. In its Haitian setting, Vers le sud sheds light on a relatively unfamiliar cultural and social milieu for the Western/Northern audience, with the director keenly aware of the exoticism of the subject matter and the impossibility of the film to maintain its neutrality in a problematic engagement with the Orient/South. The article argues that the privileged position of the film’s protagonists is matched not only by Cantet’s directorial gaze, but also by the intellectual detachment of postcolonial scholars such as the article’s authors, who acknowledge that their engagement with the subject matter risks re-enacting the Orientalist dynamics they seek to expose.

Abstract BACKGROUND – Colombia occupies 4th place among all Latin American countries in HIV/AIDS incidence rates, which have been increasing since the 1980s. There is a paucity of studies which address this trend. In this study we employed spatial and temporal trend analyses to study how the epidemic behaves in Colombian territory. METHODS - Our sample was composed of 72,994 HIV/AIDS cases and 21,898 AIDS-related deaths reported to the National Ministry of Health between 2008 and 2016. We employed the joinpoint regression model to analyze the annual HIV/AIDS incidence and AIDS mortality rates. In the spatial analysis we used univariate autocorrelation techniques and the Kernel density estimator. RESULTS – While the HIV/AIDS incidence had an increasing trend in Colombia, the AIDS mortality was stabilized. There was a downward trend in HIV/AIDS incidence and AIDS mortality among people between 0 to 14 years of age. An upward trend was observed for HIV/AIDS incidence in people older than 15 years of age and with the highest trend in 65 years and over group. AIDS mortality showed an increased trend in those 65 years old or over. The high-high clusters of HIV/AIDS incidence and AIDS mortality were located in the Andean and Caribbean regions. The HIV epidemic expanded from the North Caribbean region to Midwest Colombia.CONCLUSION – Sexual tourism and internal or external immigration might be responsible for the highest HIV/AIDS incidence and AIDS mortality rates observed in the Caribbean and Andean regions. Our results showed that Colombia needs to invest in specific and comprehensive public health policies to end HIV by 2030.

AbstractIn the last decade, Franco-Moroccan directors have begun to explore culturally taboo and unrepresented sexual communities within Morocco. This article examines how two pioneering films, Abdellah Taïa's Salvation Army and Nabil Ayouch's Much Loved, contribute to an emerging cultural politics in the Arab-speaking world that is reframing marginalized or invisible sexualities. While these films address issues of sexual tourism, incest, and prostitution, among others, the focus of this article is on the films’ critiques of internalized homophobia, sexual tourism, and the sociopolitical power structures that occlude, marginalize, or shame those males outside of the heterosexual matrix. Analyzing the films’ portrayal of the semiotics of forbidden desire, internalized homophobia, and the circulation and spatialization of queer sexualities in Morocco, this article argues that Salvation Army and Much Loved complicate our understanding of Arab masculinities and add to a growing queer visibility that stretches from the Maghreb to the Gulf.

This article traces the genealogy of the figure of the dancer or prostitute from the Ouled-Naïl ethnic group in Algeria from the second half of the 19th century onwards. It assesses the possible responsibility of writer-travellers in the sexual exploitation of these women. By focusing on three great writers of the time (Fromentin, Maupassant and Gide), it aims to measure the appreciation of prostitution in French literary discourse, initially perceived as traditional practice yet which gradually engendered sexual tourism.
