Introduction: Kacangma (Leonurus sibiricus), turmeric (Curcuma longa) and black pepper (Piper nigrum) are the oldest and most important spice crops used for culinary purposes in Malaysia for centuries. Although many biological activities including antioxidant properties (AP) have been reported, there are no confirmed reports on the activities of this cocktail, nutri-Pepper enhancer. Purpose: The study evaluated the AP of the Nutri-Pepper enhancer in vitro. Methodology: The AP were evaluated using in vitro antioxidant assays where the total polyphenolic content (TPC), DPPH radical scavenging activity, tyrosinase inhibition activity, xanthine oxidase superoxide scavenging activity (XOD), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) were measured.  Results: Based on the antioxidant activity range, extract of Nutri pepper enhancer was high in tyrosinase inhibition activity, 87.16%, moderate in xanthine oxidase superoxide scavenging activity (XOD) 69.72% and low in 1,2-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity (DPPH) 46.78%. On the other hand, the extract showed high ORAC and total phenolic content with the value of 236,00 µmol TE/100g and 282 mg/100 GAE. Conclusion: This finding proven that the consumption of this product can reduce or even eliminate the harmful effects on humans from contaminants in foods and from the environment; this is even more important for people living in polluted cities.

Three hexacoordinated octahedral nickel(II) complexes, [Ni(sal-L-phe)(phen)(CH3OH)]⋅CH3OH (1), [Ni(naph-L-phe)(phen)(CH3OH)] (2), and [Ni(o-van-L-phe)(phen)(CH3OH)]⋅5CH3OH (3) (sal-L-phe = a Schiff base derived from salicylaldehyde and L-phenylalanine, naph-L-phe = a Schiff base derived from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and L-phenylalanine, o-van-L-phe = a Schiff base derived from o-vanillin and L-phenylalanine, and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The interactions of these complexes with CT-DNA were studied by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and viscosity measurements. The binding constant (Kb) values of 1.82 × 104 M−1 for 1, 1.96 × 104 M−1 for 2, and 2.02 × 104 M−1 for 3 suggest that each of these complexes could bind with DNA in a moderate intercalative mode. Complex 3 exhibited a stronger interaction with CT-DNA than complexes 1 and 2. In addition, the superoxide scavenging activity of these complexes was investigated by the nitrotetrazolium blue chloride (NBT) light reduction method, and the results showed that they exhibited a significant superoxide scavenging activity with the IC50 values of 4.4 × 10−5 M for complex 1, 5.6 × 10−5 M for complex 2, and 3.1 × 10−5 M for complex 3, respectively.

The novel electrochemical approach based on coulometric response of electro-generated superoxide (O[Formula: see text] was used to determine scavenging properties of 2H-5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (H[Formula: see text]T(4-OHPh)P); 2H-5,10,15,20-tetrakis[4-(2-hydroxyethyloxy)phenyl]porphyrin (H[Formula: see text]T(4-OH(CH[Formula: see text]OPh)P); 2H-5,10,15,20-tetrakis[4-(4-hydroxybutyloxy)phenyl]porphyrin (H[Formula: see text]T(4-OH(CH[Formula: see text]OPh)P); Zn-5,10,15,20-tetrakis[4-(4-hydroxyethyloxy)phenyl]porphyrin (ZnT(4-OH(CH[Formula: see text]OPh)P) superoxide. It has been identified that the porphyrins under study possess good antioxidant properties. The analysis of possible interactions between porphyrins and superoxide anion-radical has shown that high values of superoxide scavenging activity of tetraphenylporphyrins with alcohol chains can be explained by the nucleophilic attack of O[Formula: see text] on the C–C bonds of alcohol.
