The increasing threats from biological agents have become a concern in laboratories, and emerging infectious diseases have demanded increased awareness and preparedness of laboratory facilities. Bio-risk assessment is needed to provide a framework for organisations to establish a comprehensive bio-risk management system. The assessment criteria should include both biosafety and biosecurity measures. Laboratories in Indonesia play a significant role in public health interventions in term of disease screening, diagnosis and medical decision making. The National Clinical and Medical Referral Centre Laboratories have the potential of daily exposures to dangerous biological materials. This study aims to identify the gap between bio-risk management system implementation and International Standard Organisation (ISO) 35001:2019 requirements. The 202 items in ISO 35001:2019 are categorized into seven main elements. The findings show that more than half of the elements on ISO 35001:2019 have been implemented in these centres. Good performance was identified at lab 4 and 5 which obtained the highest scores, particularly in the context of organisation, planning, operation and improvement elements. However, the widest gap was found in leadership, support and performance evaluation. One way to address this would be to create written rules and regulations at the laboratory top management level to require all laboratory facilities to comply to the bio-risk policies, rules, and regulations.

The objective of this paper is the computational and experimental study of the fracture behavior of spruce wood under quasi-static loading conditions during a three-point bending test. The experimental tests were performed on the electronic testing machine Zwick Z100 (Zwick-Roell GmbH & Co. KG, Ulm, Germany) with displacement control, according to the standard International Standard Organisation (ISO) 13061-4: 2014. The specimens were made of Norway spruce (Picea abies) wood, with dimensions of 25 mm × 25 mm in cross-section and 549 mm in length. Six tests were performed for each orientation (radial and tangential) of the wood fibres. Based on the experimental results, the computational model was created and validated by considering the mechanical responses in two different directions due to the orientation of the wood fibres. An orthotropic material model with damage evolution was selected as the computational model. The computational model was validated using the inverse procedure for the determination of the constitutive material parameters, including the damage parameters of three-point bending test specimens. A finite element method (FEM) in the framework of program package ABAQUS was used for the computational simulation, while the open code Optimax was used for the optimization procedure. Comparison between the experimental and computational force vs. the displacement response showed a very good correlation in the results for the spruce wood specimens under three-point bending tests, with Pearson′s correlation coefficient of r = 0.994 for the tangential and r = 0.988 for the radial orientation. Therefore, validation of the proposed computational model was confirmed, and can be used further in numerical simulations of the fatigue behavior of wood specimens.

Application of nanoparticles have been proven to aid heat transfer in engineering systems. This work experimentally investigated the performance of a domestic refrigerator under the influence of Al2O3 nanoparticles dispersed in mineral oil based lubricant at different charges (40, 60 and 80 g) of LPG refrigerant. The performance of the system was then investigated using test parameters including: power consumption, evaporator air temperature (pull-down time), to attain the specified International Standard Organisation (ISO) requirement for standard evaporator air temperature with small refrigerator size. Results showed improved pull down time and steady state evaporator air temperatures for the nano-lubricant based LPG. Improvement of about 11.79% in coefficient of performance (COP) was obtained with Al2O3-lubricant based LPG at 40g charge on the refrigerator system, while reduction of about 2.08% and 4.41% in COP were observed at 60 and 80 g charge of LPG based on Al2O3-lubricant respectively. Furthermore, reduction of about 13.4% and 19.53% in the power consumption of the system were observed at 40 and 60g charges of Al2O3-lubricant based LPG, whereas at 80 g, an increase of about 1.28% was recorded. Using Al2O3-LPG nano-refrigerant in domestic refrigerators is economical  and also a better alternative to pure LPG.

Potatoes are usually a high-glycaemic index (GI) food. Finding a low-GI potato and developing a screening method for finding low-GI cultivars are both health and agricultural priorities. The aims of the present study were to screen the commonly used and newly introduced cultivars of potatoes, in a bid to discover a low-GI potato, and to describe the relationship between in vitro starch digestibility of cooked potatoes and their in vivo glycaemic response. According to International Standard Organisation (ISO) guidelines, seven different potato cultivars were tested for their GI. In vitro enzymatic starch hydrolysis and chemical analyses, including amylose content analysis, were carried out for each potato cultivar, and correlations with the respective GI values were sought. The potato cultivars had a wide range of GI values (53–103). The Carisma cultivar was classified as low GI and the Nicola cultivar (GI = 69) as medium GI and the other five cultivars were classified as high GI according to ISO guidelines. The GI values were strongly and positively correlated with the percentage of in vitro enzymatic hydrolysis of starch in the cooked potatoes, particularly with the hydrolysis percentage at 120 min (r 0·91 and P <0·01). Amylose, dietary fibre and total starch content was not correlated with either in vitro starch digestibility or GI. The findings suggest that low-GI potato cultivars can be identified by screening using a high-throughput in vitro digestion procedure, while chemical composition, including amylose and fibre content, is not indicative.

Defining and generating a working drawing of a conical spur gear to replace an original piece requires geometrical and dimensional constraints, especially when the cutting module is determined by reverse engineering. We propose an approach using Computer aided design (CAD) to establish the drawing definitions and to verify the assembly of the conical spur gear. We have developed the model drawing according to the standard International Standard Organisation (ISO), in which we introduce a new non-existent coast into the current dimensioning and check the assembly using the Tredgold method, which transforms a conical spur gear into a model cylindrical spur gear, to which the equations for parallel cylindrical gearing can be applied. This method determines a good estimate if the couple of gear verifies the specified geometrical conditions of assemblies. We present the developed algorithms, as well as the results of applications of various programs.

Today’s society requires companies to act more and more effectively for the general good, by respecting human rights and the environment. Innovative and enlightened companies try to meet this need through the adoption of several initiatives. Accordingly, the International Standard Organisation is now working on attempts to unify these initiatives and to formulate an internationally recognised standard, providing guidance to companies on social responsibility. Currently the SA8000 international standard is the most often used tool – based on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) philosophy – which guarantees the respect of fundamental workers’ rights. Since 2003, Italy holds the world record for its number of SA8000 certified companies. This paper discusses the findings of a two‐stage survey of the Italian SA8000 certified companies carried out over the last two years. The focus of the survey is on both reasons and effects of the implementation of SA8000 standard. In the first stage the rate of response was very high while in the second stage it was satisfactory. The results provide a clear picture of the companies and their degree of achivement and awareness of the fundamental principles of human resource management. A section of the survey deals with some issues related to the Public Sector.
