Preventive maintenance techniques are considered useful in extending the life of a pavement if applied at the right time. Discussed here is a framework for a process that can be used to select the proper maintenance strategies for different distress types in asphalt pavements, depending on traffic level and environment. Maintenance treatments addressed include only crack seals, fog seals, slurry seals, microsurfacings, chip seals, thin asphalt concrete overlays, and other thin surface treatments. Types of distress considered include roughness, rutting, fatigue cracking, longitudinal cracking, raveling, weathering, and bleeding. Decision trees, based on the authors' experiences, are presented to illustrate the process in selecting appropriate maintenance treatments. A framework for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of the various maintenance treatments is presented. Existing methods for evaluating cost-effectiveness of maintenance are discussed together with their strengths and weaknesses. An example of cost-effectiveness for different maintenance treatments is also briefly presented.

Two-dimensional warranty has played a significant role in improving product quality and competitiveness. However, two-dimensional basic warranty (BW) and extended warranty (EW) have not yet been combined effectively, and the customized maintenance strategies based on the consumers’ heterogeneity have been quite limited, which result in high maintenance costs. In this paper, the possibility of reducing warranty cost over BW and EW is explored by classifying customers based on their usage rates and then offering them with customized preventive maintenance (PM) strategies. By considering the purchasing ratio of EW contracts, the PM strategies for BW and EW are closely combined by the bi-level programming model. Numerical analysis is given to show the application of the proposed warranty strategy, and the significant findings and sensitivity of the main parameters are analyzed in the end. The findings demonstrate that the customized PM strategies combining BW and EW can effectively reduce warranty costs within the warranty period and provide a scientific guidance for manufacturers to design a more reasonable PM strategy.

In consideration of the situation that the conventional preventive maintenance inspection cycle of the repairable device is not be changed as long as it is determined, based on continuous-time Markov processes, the repairable device preventive maintenance control strategy is studied. The preventive maintenance model is established, i.e., its state transition diagram, steady state value of the model is calculated, the control policy of device’s check rates based on device status is proposed, and the proposed control policy is simulated and confirmed using MATLAB. Simulation results show that under the proposed control policy rule, the actual operation curve of the system can well track the desired operation curve of the system, and finally can achieve the desired steady state value. Studies have shown that the method has some help to strengthen device maintenance management, improve device maintenance strategies, ensure that the device is repaired according to the state, and reduce maintenance costs of the device.

In this work, we propose two mathematical simulation methods to evaluate the results of conditional preventive maintenance strategies based on controls and inspections with optimal performance. In order to have an optimal availability of the equipment in question, the evaluation of the maintenance strategies associated with the controls will be treated by the method of the fault trees based on the decision binary diagram with the calculation engine ALBIZIA. The maintenance performance associated with inspections will be determined by Petri networks coupled with the Monte Carlo method.

Track Maintenance (TM) is one of the critical parts of rail operations and asset management. It has been estimated that about 25–35% of all operational costs are related to the track maintenance performance which can be typically classified as either corrective maintenance (CM) or preventive maintenance (PM). The first is a more reactive approach, where maintenance is conducted when inspections have revealed a need for action. The latter is a strategic approach that is mainly applied through maintenance planning. High Speed Rail (HSR) systems, especially on shared HSR corridors, can complicate track maintenance conditions due to the tight tolerances and precision, reliability and safety issues required by HSR. This paper evaluates strategic approaches for track maintenance planning along selected HSR corridors with either shared or dedicated operation pattern. The paper uses analytical and descriptive parameter tables to evaluate how sensitive a corridor is to changes in essential criteria for developing track maintenance strategies (TMS). These criteria may include: - HSR traffic conditions and operations regime; - TMS approach (or strategy) on current rail lines connected to the new HSR line; - Operation and Maintenance (O&M) structure of HSR management system. The descriptive parameter tables have been used by a specific PM modeling approach called preventive maintenance scheduling problem (PMSP). Before running PMSP model over a designated line, the respective parameters of the model should be calibrated and analyzed based on the line specifications. The descriptive parameter tables can be used during calibration procedure to assist in analyzing the sensitivity of model’s parameters and variables for the above mentioned criteria. This paper discusses and compares TMS approaches on three planned HSR corridors in Europe (Lisbon-Madrid HSR), Asia (Tehran-Isfahan HSR) and USA (California HSR). All three HSR rail corridors are under development, but each presents specific sensitivities to the given PM model’s parameters that can affect track maintenance strategic planning along these corridors. We concluded that TMS model calibration by these descriptive analytical tables can assist maintenance strategic planners in identifying different TMS approaches when dealing with maintenance contractors, HSR operators and public rail authorities.
