The Social License to Automate Task has investigated the social dimensions of user engagement with automated technologies in energy systems to understand how end-user trust to automate is built and maintained in different jurisdictions and cultural settings. The rapid uptake of renewable energy systems will require new automated technologies to balance energy supplies. Some developers are looking to locate these in households where energy is being used. This saves moving the energy from centralised generation sites (remote hydro, solar or wind). This report details the findings from a 2 year project with 16 researchers in 6 countries, 26 Case studies spanning electric vehicles, home and precinct batteries, air conditioners and other heat pumps.

The number of renewable energy systems is still increasing. To reduce the worldwide CO2 emissions, there will be even more challenges in the distribution grids like currently upcoming charging stations or heat pumps. All these new electric systems in the low voltage (LV) and medium voltage (MV) levels are characterized by an unsteady behavior. To monitor and predict the behavior of these new flexible systems, a grid state forecast is needed. This software tool calculates wind, photovoltaic, and load forecasts. These power forecasts are already in the focus of research, but there are some specific use cases, which require a more specific solution. To get a variously applicable software tool, different new functions to improve an already existing grid state forecast tool were developed and evaluated. For example, it will be proofed if a grid state forecast tool can be improved by calculating the number or the base load of the loads in grid areas by just one available measurement. Another big subject exists in the exchange of forecast information between different voltage levels. How this can be realized and how big the effect on the forecast quality is, will be analyzed. The results of these evaluations will be shown in this paper.

Abstract Improved end-user engagement is considered to be a key factor in decarbonization efforts towards climate neutral energy systems. While first adopters are already actively seeking ways how to optimize their energy consumption, a true shift in consumer behaviour can only be achieved if the financial benefits are well established and presented. The study aims at estimating the economic performance of end-user engagement in provision of demand response services using air-to-air heat pumps as the underlying technology. The results of the paper help evaluate in a real data setting whether the existing market framework provides sufficient incentives to facilitate end-user participation in the demand response service.

Industry is one of the major energy consumers in Germany. In order to fulfil the social responsibility of the energy revolution, companies required to install and to use their own renewable energy. With the increasing set-up of renewable energy systems at the production site, these companies are interested in consuming most of the energy directly on-site. Based on a material flow simulation of the Green Factory Bavaria in Augsburg, this paper compares different indicators for the energy self-sufficiency. Finally the effect of electrical energy storage to increase the energy self-sufficiency is examined.
