EFFECT OF SEED SIZE ON GERMINATION, SEEDLING VIGOR, ELECTROLYTE LEAKAGE, AND ESTABLISHMENT OF BIRD’S-FOOT TREFOIL (Lotus corniculatus L.)

Seed viability, seedling vigor, and field establishment were measured on five seed sizes from five commercial, Certified seed lots of bird’s-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L. ’Leo’). Viability as determined by percent germination at 20 °C varied among seed lots and among seed sizes, but a consistent relationship between viability and seed size was not observed. Similarly, speed of germination did not vary in response to seed size but did vary among lots. Within a seed lot, seedling length after 7 days growth varied in response to seed size; the larger seeds produced longer seedlings. However, this relationship was not observed among seed lots because seed lots with the highest average seed weight did not produce the longest seedlings. The seedling vigor ranking on the basis of electrolyte leakage differed if leakage was expressed relative to seed weight or the seed number. Leakage per 100 seeds was significantly and negatively correlated with percent germination, but not with seedling length or field establishment. On the other hand, leakage per gram of seed was significantly and negatively correlated with percent germination, seedling length, and field establishment. The larger seed sizes within a lot tended to have improved field establishment, so field establishment was highly correlated with seedling length (r = 0.76). Electrolyte leakage per gram of seed, and percentage germination were also significantly correlated with establishment (r = − 0.59 and 0.45, respectively). Germination potential and ability of the seedling to elongate rapidly are related to the field establishment of bird’s-foot trefoil. Germination potential was primarily influenced by the seed lot, whereas the ability to elongate was influenced by seed size (within a seed lot).

Seed size is an important trait in common bean. The objective was to identify RAPD markers associated with QTL for seed weight, seed length, and seed height in a molecular marker-based linkage map in a recombinant inbred (RI) population from the common bean cross of the larger seeded (100 seed/39 to 47 g) PC-50 (ovate seed shape) × smaller seeded (100 seed/26 to 35 g) XAN-159 (flat rhomboidal seed shape). The parents and RI lines were grown in two separate greenhouse and two field (Wisconsin, Dominican Republic) experiments using a RCBD. Continuous distributions for seed weight, seed length, and seed height were observed for RI lines indicating quantitative inheritance. One to three QTLs affecting seed weight explained 17% to 41% of the phenotypic variation. Two to three QTLs for seed length explained 23% to 45% of the phenotypic variation. One to four QTL associated with seed height explained 17% to 39% of the phenotypic variation. A RAPD marker M5.850 in linkage group 3 was consistently associated with seed weight, seed length, and seed height in all experiments and explained 7% to 13% of the phenotypic variation for these traits. A seedcoat pattern morphological marker (C) in linkage group 1 was associated with seed weight and seed height in two greenhouse experiments.

SUMMARYTwenty-five cultivars of soyabean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), differing in their origin, crop duration and seed size, were planted four times at bi-weekly intervals during the major rainy season at Ibadan, Nigeria and harvested at optimum maturity or two weeks later. Delayed harvest and intense rainfall during pod maturation were essential for selecting for resistance to field weathering, but 2 weeks' delay enabled susceptible and resistant cultivars to be identified. Percentage of infected seed had the highest correlation with potential germination at harvest (r=−0·869**) but may not be a suitable criterion for use in a screening programme. An alternative would be to screen cultivars for resistance to weathering on the basis of seed size and the proportion of smooth and clean seed, since these characters were highly correlated to potential germination (r=−0·562** and 0·632** respectively).

The present study of the winter annual Crepis tectorum examines the relationship between seed (achene) size and the extent to which seeds resist germination during the year of their production. I carried out two seed burial experiments, one at an outcrop site occupied by a small-seeded population, and another in an experimental garden with soil from the same field site, with seeds representing the local population and a segregating generation of a cross between two other populations. Using logistic regression with data corrected for seed viability, I found an association between small seed size and failure to germinate in the first autumn. The small seed size characterizing many outcrop populations may have evolved as a response to selection for delaying germination in a habitat subject to unpredictable droughts during the growth season. We studied the effects of various cytokinins and urea derivatives on germination of aged seeds of in Lotus corniculatus L. The following substances were applied: N6-isoprenoid cytokinins (isopentenyl adenine and zeatin), adenine sulfate, N6-aromatic cytokinins (kinetin, benzyladenine) and their N9-ribosides, N-benzyl-9-(2- tetrahydropyranyl)adenine, and urea derivatives (diphenylurea, thidiazuron, and chloro-pyridyl phenylurea). With the exception of adenine sulfate, all cytokinins increased the percentage of seed germination up to twofold, depending on their kind and concentration. It is concluded that cytokinins may be among the missing factors in aged seeds of L. corniculatus contributing to the implementation of their full germination potential. They could be used to improve germination of both freshly harvested and aged seed samples, if necessary. .

Soils with highly uniform textural, physical, and chemical characteristics still give rise to crop stand variability. Seed quality is one of the factors adding to yield variability and has become a concern for corn growers. Hybrid seed producers claim that their seeds provide a uniformity in crop emergence and productivity, but they do not always provide detailed studies to support this claim. Based on growers’ concerns, we examined fields planted with three different hybrid varieties and found that 25% to 50% of the stand had relatively weak vigor, where seed variety A showed 15% of seedlings with lower vigor, and varieties B and C had 30% of seedlings with low vigor. These apparent differences in plant vigor prompted us to initiate a cursory investigation to identify how seed size influenced seedling vigor and if the seedling’s microbial profile played a role in the early growth stages of three commonly grown corn hybrids in Ontario. Seeds were separated based on size, prior to conducting a growth room study. Different sizes of seeds from the same seed lot showed significant differences in vigor capacity and related biometric components. Significant differences were also found in their nutritional composition and microbial profiles within the different seed sizes and the roots and shoots of seedlings derived from such seeds. The results clearly indicate that seed size greatly impacts the plant growth and its microbiome, resulting in seedlings with different plant vigor, microbiomes, and performance.

AbstractThe variation for protein content has been assessed in a series of pea (Pisum sativum L.) lines differing in mean seed size. The range of seed size within each genotype was manipulated by growing the plants in different environments and by altering the structure of the plant. The response of the lines in terms of seed weight to the environments and treatments was inconsistent, but 90% of the total variation was accounted for by differences between genotypes. In contrast, for percentage protein, the genetic component was much weaker with nearly half the variation being accounted for by within (residual) variation. The correlations between seed weight and percentage protein were highly genotype specific. For the largerseeded genotype, percentage protein increased with increasing seed size (r= +0.9, P < 0.01), while for the small-seeded genotype there was mid-range negative value (r = −0.5, P <0.01). It is suggested that any assessment of percentage protein in pea genotypes must take account of seed size.

Several hundred two-year-old nursery plants originating in the early-type trefoil cultivar Maitland were rated for flowering maturity, morphological features and growth pattern. Open-pollination seed was collected from these and 100-seed weight determinations were made.The experimental material was organized into two sections for testing purposes. In one, the effect of maternal maturity on the seedling vigor of the progeny was studied and in the other the effect of maternal morphology. Each section was made up of five classes, varying either in maturity or in morphology. Each class contained either nine or ten progeny lines. The range in seed size was similar for all classes. No relationship was found between maturity, morphological type or growth habit of the maternal parent on the one hand and the seedling vigor rating of their progeny at six and ten weeks of age on the other.The breeding implications of these findings are discussed.

Forage and seed yield, percentage seed germination, speed of germination index, and 1,000-seed weight were determined for a population of 170 plants selected from Oxley cicer milkvetch (Astragalus cicer L.). Seedlings from open-pollinated seed from the selected plants were measured for leaf weight and leaf area, and specific leaf weight was calculated. Most of the characters studied were asymmetrical in distribution. The correlation coefficient between forage and seed yields of mature plants was positive and highly significant. Seedling leaf weight was positively and closely related to seedling leaf area, but seedling leaf area was a more reliable indicator of photosynthetic efficiency. The variability in the characters studied in the selected population suggests that further improvement in forage yield, germination percentage, speed of germination, and seedling vigor may be obtained through a breeding program.
