Variability of apparent ileal amino acid digestibility in canola meal for growing-finishing pigs

Studies were conducted with six barrows, average initial body weigh 32.5 kg, fitted with a T-cannula at the distal ileum, to determine some of the factors responsible for the variability in apparent ileal digestibility values of amino acids (AA) in canola meal. The barrows were fed six corn starch-based diets, formulated to contain 18.0% crude protein (CP) on a dry matter (DM) basis from six canola meal samples, according to a 6 × 6 Latin square design. Chromic oxide (0.3%) was used as a digestibility marker. The pigs were fed twice daily, at 08:00 and 20:00 h. The dietary allowance was 1600 g d−1. Each experimental period consisted of 8 d. Ileal digesta were collected at 2-h intervals, for a total of 24 h from 08:00 on day 6 to 08:00 h on day 8. With the exception of proline, there were differences (P < 0.05) in the apparent ileal digestibility values of all AA among the six canola meal samples. Of the indispensable AA in canola meal, the digestibility values of arginine, histidine, and methionine were relatively high, ranging from 79.4 to 84.4, from 76.5 to 81.0%, and from 77.3 to 82.4%, respectively, while the digestibility values of threonine and tryptophan were relatively low, ranging from 59.7 to 66.5 and from 61.7 to 67.5%, respectively. Furthermore, with the exception of arginine, the digestibility values of the indispensable AA were negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with the neutral-detergent fiber (NDF) content in canola meal. In addition with the exception of threonine, tryptophan and valine, the digestibility values of the indispensable AA were positively correlated (P < 0.05) with their respective dietary levels. In conclusion, measured with the ileal analysis method, there were differences (P < 0.05) in the digestibility values of the majority of AA among the canola meal samples. Differences in NDF content were mainly responsible for the variation. In addition, differences in the dietary levels of most AA also contributed, in part, to the variation of AA digestibility values. Six barrows, average initial body weight 32.5 kg, fitted with a simple T-can-nula at the distal ileum, were used to investigate factors responsible for the variability of apparent ileal amino acid (AA) digestibility values among six pea samples. The barrows were fed six corn-starch-based diets, formulated to contain 16.5% crude protein (CP) (as-fed) from six different pea samples, according to a 6 × 6 Latin square design. Chromic oxide (0.3%) was used as the digestibility marker. The pigs were fed twice daily, at 0800 and 2000 h. The dietary allowance was 1600 g−1. Each experimental period lasted 7 d. Ileal digesta were collected at 2-h intervals for a total of 24 h from 0800 h on day 6 to 0800 h on day 8. With the exception of arginine, cysteine, histidine, and methionine, there were differences (P < 0.05) in the apparent ileal digestibility values of the indispensable including semi-essential (+semi-) AA among the pea samples. Of the indispensable AA (+semi-) within each pea sample, the digestibility values of arginine and lysine were relatively high, ranging from 88.3 to 91.3% and from 78.7 to 85.2%, respectively, while the digestibility values of cysteine, methionine, and tryptophan were relatively low, ranging from 53.8 to 62.7%, from 69.4 to 75.4%, and from 53.1 to 70.4%, respectively. With the exception of arginine, cysteine, and tryptophan, the ileal digestibility values of the indispensable AA (+semi-) were negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with the neu-tral-detergent fiber content in the pea samples. Of all the AA, only the digestibility of tryptophan was negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with the trypsin inhibitor activity in the pea samples. The significant finding of this study was that with the exception of arginine, cysteine, and proline, differences in the digestibility values of all other AA in the pea samples were positively correlated (P < 0.05) with their respective dietary AA contents. This suggests that differences in AA levels in the assay diets were responsible for the variability of apparent ileal digestibility values of AA between pea samples. Therefore, to eliminate this methodological effect, true rather than apparent ileal AA digestibility values for peas should be determined. Key words: Amino acids, ileal digestibility, peas, pigs

Abstract An experiment was conducted to determine if the inclusion of a preparation of isoquinoline alkaloids (IQ) in corn-soybean meal diets fed to finishing pigs increases the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of amino acids (AA) and crude protein (CP) and the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of CP and gross energy. Twelve ileal cannulated barrows (BW: 77.2 ± 6.23 kg) were allotted to a triplicated 4 x 3 incomplete Latin square design with 4 diets and 9 replicates per diet. Diets were supplemented with either 0, 40, 80, or 160 mg/kg IQ and with 0.40% titanium dioxide as an indigestible marker. Each collection period lasted 14 d with d 1 through 10 as an adaptation to the diets, fecal samples were taken using the grab sampling technique on d 11 and 12, and ileal digesta were collected for 8 h on d 13 and 14. Data were analyzed using the Proc MIXED procedure of SAS. Contrast statements were used to determine linear and quadratic effects of including IQ in the diets. Results were considered significant at P ≤ 0.05 and considered a trend at 0.05 &lt; P ≤ 0.10. Inclusion of IQ resulted in a quadratic increase (P &lt; 0.05) in the AID of CP and AA in corn-soybean meal diets fed to finishing pigs, with the greatest digestibility values generally observed in the 40 mg/kg IQ treatment. Additionally, IQ resulted in a quadratic increase (P = 0.009) in the ATTD of CP, with the greatest digestibility observed in the 80 mg/kg IQ treatment. Therefore, it was concluded that supplementing corn-soybean meal diets with 40 or 80 mg/kg IQ may increase the AID of CP and AA and ATTD of CP by finishing pigs.

The utilization of nitrogen (N) and amino acids (AA) was determined in four canola meal (CM) supplemented diets containing either 7.8, 13.2, 17.0 or 23.8% crude protein. Eight crossbred barrows with average initial weight of 9.0 ± 0.9 kg were allotted to one of four isoenergetic diets in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design. Endogenous levels of N and AA in feces were determined by the regression analysis method. The apparent digestibility of dry matter and energy decreased linearly (P < 0.05) as the level of CM in the diet increased. True N balance increased (P < 0.05) with increasing CM levels. True N digestibility and true availabilities among all AA were not affected (P > 0.05) by treatment. Key words: Starter pig, canola meal, nitrogen balance, amino acids

Studies were carried out with 12 pigs (Yorkshire × Landrace) to determine the effect of dietary fibre level on amino acid digestibility. The pigs were weaned at 21 d of age and fitted with a simple T-cannula at the distal ileum at 23 or 24 d of age. The pigs were fed four isonitrogenous corn starch-based soybean meal diets (22.5 % crude protein) containing 4.3, 7.3, 10.3 and 13.3% Solkafloc according to a balanced two-period change-over design. The pigs were fed four times daily, equal amounts, at 6-h intervals. The diets were supplied at a rate of 5% of the average body weight which was determined at the initiation of the first (8.8 kg) and second (11.7 kg) experimental period. Each experimental period comprised 10 d. Feces were collected for 48 h on days 6 and 7 and ileal digesta for 24 h during days 8, 9 and 10. Chromic oxide was used as digestibility marker. The dietary inclusion of Solkafloc, up to 13.3 %, did not affect (P > 0.05) the apparent ileal as well as the fecal digestibilities of crude protein and amino acids. In conclusion, starter pigs can tolerate up to 13.3% Solkafloc, equivalent to 16.8% neutral-detergent fibre, in corn starch-based soybean meal diets without a depression in amino acid digestibility. In experiment, six pigs fitted with a T-cannula at the distal ileum were fed six diets in a 6×6 Latin square design. Treatments were corn-soybean meal diet (CS), diet containing wheat by-products (WBP), and diet containing corn distillers dried grains with solubles and canola meal (DDCM) without or with xylanase (X) supplementation (CS-X, WBP-X and DDCM-X). The WBP and DDCM diets had higher AID of lipids and ADF (P < 0.05) than CS diets. A xylanase×diet interaction was observed for the AID NDF (P < 0.05) showing larger impact of xylanase in WBP than in the other diets. Using similar dietary treatments except for CS-X, growth and body composition of the sixty males (83.0 kg) at the end of the d28 growing phase showed that pig fed the CS had greater ADFI (P = 0.004) and ADG (P = 0.014) for period 0-14d but not from 15 28d. Overall performance (0-28d) showed higher ADFI (9.5%; P = 0.015) in CS but no difference was observed for ADG and G:F. These results showed that diets containing a high proportion of by-products can give equivalent performance to a CS diet and that adding xylanase for this short period had limited.

Camelina seed production has increased in North America because of demand for camelina oil for biofuel production. Camelina expellers (CE) is the co-product that remains after oil has been expelled, and CE usually contains approximately 35% crude protein (CP), 14% ether extract, 10% crude fiber, and 5% ash making it an attractive feedstuff for livestock. An experiment was conducted to determine the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of CP and amino acids (AA) in two sources of camelina seeds [CS-1 and CS-2; average: 39% acid hydrolyzed ether extract (AEE), 28% CP, 27% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 12% acid detergent fiber (ADF), 4% ash] and in three sources of CE (CE-1, CE-2, and CE-3; average: 35% CP, 24% NDF, 15% AEE, 14% ADF, 6% ash) and to compare the SID of CP and AA in camelina products with the SID of CP and AA in solvent-extracted canola meal fed to pigs. Seven growing pigs (initial BW 43.5 kg) were randomly allotted to a 7×7 Latin square design with seven diets fed to individually housed pigs over seven periods. Six of the diets contained CS, CE, or canola meal as the sole source of CP and AA and a N-free diet was used to determine basal endogenous losses of CP and AA. The SID of CP in CS-1 and CE-2 was less (P<0.01) than the SID of CP in canola meal, but the SID of CP in CS-2, CE-1, and CE-3 was not different from the SID of CP in canola meal. The SID of Lys in CS-1 and CS-2 was less (P<0.01) than in canola meal, but the SID of Lys was not different among CE-1, CE-2, CE-3, and canola meal. Results from this experiment indicate that the SID of AA in CE is mostly comparable with that of canola meal, but the digestibility of CP and AA in the two camelina seeds was somewhat less than in CE and canola meal. Camelina expellers may, therefore, be included in diets fed to pigs.

Abstract An experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that addition of crystalline amino acids (AA) to diets during the adaptation or collection periods will not influence calculated values for apparent ileal digestibility (AID) or standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of AA in corn and soybean meal (SBM). Seven ileal-cannulated barrows (initial body weight: 77.9 ± 2.6 kg) were allotted to a 7 × 7 Latin Square design with 7 dietary treatments and 7 periods. Dietary treatments included feeding diets based on corn or SBM without or with crystalline AA for the entire 7-d period or with crystalline AA during the adaptation period, but without crystalline AA during the collection period. An N-free diet was also used. Each experimental period consisted of 5 d of adaptation to the diets followed by 2 d of ileal digesta collection, with digesta being collected for 9 hr/d starting after feeding the morning meal. Thus, the entire experiment lasted 49 d. The AID and SID of crude protein (CP) and AA were calculated using values determined in corn or in SBM without or with crystalline AA to determine if crystalline AA influenced calculated values for AID or SID of CP and AA. Results indicated that addition of crystalline AA to diets fed during the entire 7-d period increased (P &lt; 0.05) AID of some AA in corn and SBM. However, no differences in SID of CP and AA were observed between pigs fed the diets without crystalline AA and pigs fed the diets with crystalline AA if dietary crystalline AA were ignored in calculations of SID values. This indicates that crystalline AA were 100% absorbed before the distal ileum and did not affect calculated values for SID of AA if calculations were based only on the AA in corn or SBM. Therefore, it is concluded that crystalline AA may be added to experimental diets in digestibility experiments before and during collection periods without affecting results, if crystalline AA are disregarded in the calculation of AID or SID of AA in ingredients.

Abstract The objective was to test the hypothesis that there is no effect of origin or processing procedure on the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) and crude protein (CP) in sunflower co-products. Six sources of sunflower meal (SFM) and 1 source of sunflower expellers (SFE) were obtained from Ukraine, Italy, Hungary, and the U.S. Each source of SFM or SFE was the only source of CP and AA in 1 diet and an N-free diet was also used for a total of 8 diets. Eight barrows (body weight: 28.5 ± 2.4 kg) had a T-cannula installed in the distal ileum and were allotted to 1 of the 8 diets using an 8 × 8 Latin square design with 8 periods. The Lys:CP ratio in the 6 sources of SFM ranged from 3.10 to 3.96% with CP concentrations ranging from 27.34 to 36.75%. Crude protein in SFE was 26.87% and the Lys:CP ratio was 3.51%. Concentrations of acid hydrolyzed ether extract in the 6 sources of SFM ranged from 0.60 to 3.11%, but SFE contained 8.77%. Results indicated that the SID of CP was lower (P &lt; 0.05) in SFM from Hungary compared with all other sources of SFM except for 1 of the sources from Ukraine. There were no differences in the SID of Lys, Met, and Trp among sources of SFM, but for most of the remaining indispensable AA, the SFM from Hungary had less (P &lt; 0.05) SID than the other sources. However, only few differences in SID of indispensable AA were observed among the other sources of SFM, but the SID of CP and all AA except Trp was greater (P &lt; 0.05) in SFE compared with SFM. In conclusion, there were only few differences in the SID of the first limiting AA among SFM obtained from Ukraine, Hungary, Italy, and the U.S., but the SID of CP and AA was greater in SFE than in SFM indicating that processing of sunflower seeds influence the nutritional value.

Abstract AbstractThree experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA), concentration of metabolizable (ME), and standardized total tract digestibility (STTD) of P in a new source of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS; ProCap DDGS) are greater than in conventional de-oiled DDGS. In experiment 1, nine barrows (initial BW: 67.2 ± 6.4 kg) with a T-cannula in the distal ileum were allotted to a triplicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with three diets and three periods for a total of nine replicate pigs per diet. Two diets included ProCap DDGS or de-oiled DDGS as the sole source of crude protein (CP) and AA. An N-free diet was used to determine the basal endogenous losses of CP and AA. Ileal digesta were collected on days 5 and 6 of each period after 4 d of adaptation to diets. Results from experiment 1 indicated that ProCap DDGS contained more CP and AA compared with de-oiled DDGS. The SID of all AA in ProCap DDGS was greater (P &lt; 0.001) compared with de-oiled DDGS with the exception that the SID of Pro was not different between the two sources of DDGS. In experiment 2, 24 growing barrows (initial BW: 32.7 ± 3.1 kg) were housed individually in metabolism crates and used in a randomized complete block design and fed a corn-based diet or two diets containing corn and each source of DDGS with eight replicate pigs per diet. Fecal and urine samples were collected for 4 d after 7 d of adaptation. Results from experiment 2 indicated that concentration of ME in ProCap DDGS was greater (P &lt; 0.05) compared with corn or de-oiled DDGS. In experiment 3, 32 growing barrows (initial BW: 20.2 ± 0.9 kg) were placed in metabolism crates and allotted to four diets with eight pigs per diet using a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement. The de-oiled DDGS and ProCap DDGS were both included in a diet without microbial phytase and a diet with microbial phytase (500 units/kg diet). Pigs were adapted to the diets for 5 d and fecal samples were collected for 4 d. Results from experiment 3 indicated that inclusion of phytase in the diet containing ProCap DDGS increased (P &lt; 0.05) the STTD of P, but addition of phytase to the de-oiled DDGS diet did not increase STTD of P (interaction, P &lt; 0.001), but the STTD of P was greater (P &lt; 0.05) in de-oiled DDGS compared with ProCap DDGS. In conclusion, ProCap DDGS has greater SID of AA and contains more ME, but has reduced STTD of P compared with conventional de-oiled DDGS.

A factorial digestibility experiment with three dietary levels of canola meal (CM) (0, 15, 30%), two levels of barley hulls (0, 25%) and two basal diets (approximately 10 and 19% crude protein, CP) was conducted using crossbred pigs over the weight range 45 – 90 kg. Diets contained 0.5% chromium oxide as a fecal marker. Inclusion of barley hulls improved the apparent digestibility of dietary CP (83.3% with hulls vs. 81.9% without hulls) and of corn CP (74% for corn, 76% for corn + hulls). True digestibility of CP in corn was also improved (75% for corn, 90% for corn + hulls). The energy and CP components of barley hulls were 40 and 57% digestible, respectively. The digestibility values for CM were: CP 80% (apparent) and 85% (true); energy 68%; nonprotein energy 55% and these were not affected by the presence of barley hulls. Digestibility improved as the pigs matured; each 10-kg weight increase was associated with 0.65 and 0.37 percentage units increase in digestibility of CP and energy, respectively, but these values may be lower than those normally encountered because of the use of casein for adjusting dietary CP levels in this experiment. It is suggested the barley hulls may possess two opposing properties, one that depresses digestibility of protein by increasing metabolic fecal nitrogen output and which is related to the neutral detergent fiber component, and another that in some way enhances the digestibility of protein.
