The objective of this study is to determine the influence of field compaction conditions on hot-mix asphalt layers compaction. A large field test was carried out to assess the compaction degree variation under field conditions such as the type of layer, the temperature and the roller (weight and compaction mode). Compaction evolution with roller passes of two asphalt layers was assessed in-situ with a nuclear and a non-nuclear measurement device. The analysis of the compaction results with regression models showed that the temperature, the roller weight and the asphalt mixture are the most influential and that the frequency, for all dynamic compaction modes, is not relevant. Finishing compaction increases layer’s compaction degree up to 2%. The two different density gauges used in this study measured different compaction degree values.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate outdoor PM2.5 infiltration into multifamily homes according to the building characteristics using regression models. Field test results from 23 multifamily homes were analyzed to investigate the infiltration factor and building characteristics including floor area, volume, outer surface area, building age, and airtightness. Correlation and regression analysis were then conducted to identify the building factor that is most strongly associated with the infiltration of outdoor PM2.5. The field tests revealed that the average PM2.5 infiltration factor was 0.71 (±0.19). The correlation analysis of the building characteristics and PM2.5 infiltration factor revealed that building airtightness metrics (ACH50, ELA/FA, and NL) had a statistically significant (p < 0.05) positive correlation (r = 0.70, 0.69, and 0.68, respectively) with the infiltration factor. Following the correlation analysis, a regression model for predicting PM2.5 infiltration based on the ACH50 airtightness index was proposed. The study confirmed that the outdoor-origin PM2.5 concentration in highly leaky units could be up to 1.59 times higher than that in airtight units.

Abstract The benefits of WMA technologies include reduced fuel usage and emissions in support of sustainable development, improved field compaction, which can facilitate longer haul distances and cool weather pavement, and better working conditions. Since this is a relatively new technology, it is necessary to determine the behavior and the performances of this type of asphalt mixture depending on additive percent. These technologies tend to reduce the viscosity of the asphalt and provide for the complete coating of aggregates at lower temperatures. WMA is produced at temperatures 20 to 30°C lower than typical hot-mix asphalt (HMA). The paper presents the results obtained in the Road Laboratory of Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest on an asphalt mixture with fibers (MASF16) prepared according to the “warm mix” technology with chemical additive. Different percent of additive are used in laboratory to draw up the “master curves” of asphalt mixture obtained by 4PB-PR stiffness modulus results.

In view of the high filling height and large amount of soil and rock in the high-filled embankment, the variation law of the displacement field, stress field, and plastic zone of embankment body reinforced by dynamic compaction with different energy levels and the optimal compaction energy were analyzed by means of numerical simulations and field tests. Taking the embankment section of the Ping-Zan highway as an example, the construction scheme of dynamic compaction was designed, and the optimum tamping times and effective dynamic compaction depth of the embankment filled with soil-rock were obtained through the field test. The study showed that the displacement field and the stress field are redistributed after applying single-point compaction, and the volume of the shear plastic zone increases. The optimal number of slams for high-filled granular soil is 7 times, and the effective depth of dynamic compaction is 4.5 m. The result corresponds with that by the field test, which indicates that dynamic compaction is reasonable and has a significant effect on the high embankment filled with granular soil.

Abstract A permeation theory of in-situ coal gasification is developed, and a mathematical model is derived for the process. Predicted gas compositions, gas flow rates, and temperature profiles are in good agreement with field test data. For example, experimental gas compositions deviate no more than 3 to 4 mol% from calculated values. On the average, agreement is much better. The major purpose of the permeation theory is to provide a basis for quantitative understanding of in-situ coal gasification and to lead to important general conclusions concerning the nature of the process. The well instrumented Hanna 2, Phase 2 test was essential in providing needed Phase 2 test was essential in providing needed information to confirm the theoretical conclusions. This test was conducted near Hanna, WY, during 1976 and was the best instrumented and most successful held test ever conducted up to that time. PART 1: DEVELOPMENT OF THEORY PART 1: DEVELOPMENT OF THEORY The dilemma of rapidly decreasing reserves of natural gas in the U. S. and the need for a clean, easily transported fuel has spurred much interest in the production of gas from coal. One of the most promising methods of coal gasification was promising methods of coal gasification was demonstrated by field tests conducted for the last 5 years by the Laramie Energy Research Center at Hanna, Wy. In fact, Phase 2 of the Hanna 2 test (completed in May 1976) was perhaps the most successful in-situ coal gasification test ever conducted. It more complete description of this test is given later. The experimental data are presented in Part 2 to confirm the theory developed presented in Part 2 to confirm the theory developed in this section. Since May 1976, other successful field tests have been reported by the Alberta Research Council, Texas Utilities, and the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. NEED FOR A THEORETICAL MODEL Before this study, no physical theory was available that successfully predicted field test data. Many of the most important features of underground coal gasification (UCG) were poorly understood or not understood at all. For example, the heating value of gas produced during the Hanna field tests was much higher than that reported for previous field experiments at other locations; the previous field experiments at other locations; the reasons for this anomaly were unknown. It was widely believed that the optimistic results from the Hanna field experiments might be peculiar or specific to the Hanna area. However, the development of a theory of UCG and successful field experiments with the linked, vertical well process at other locations now are proving this assumption false. The need for a theoretical understanding of UCG has become readily apparent. A more thorough interpretation of field test results required the development of a theoretical mathematical model for the process. In addition, design capability must be developed before UCG can become a commercial process. This capability is essential for carrying process. This capability is essential for carrying out economic studies and risk analyses as well as engineering design. The design method must determine many variables, such asgas composition,gas heating value,air injection rate requiredgas produced per unit volume of air injected,coal consumption rate,effect of coal composition,effect of coal bed thickness,effect of ash content,effect of moisture content,effect of varying pressure and air injection rate, andwell spacing and configuration. The theory developed in this study provides definite information concerning Items 1 through 10 as well as several items not listed. Item 11 can be determined by a two-dimensional extension of the methods described here. Not infrequently, design methods were developed empirically on the basis of experimental data. In fact, the Soviet Union has used this approach to UCG. A theoretical predictive method, however, is more desirable because much less costly field testing is required to validate the method. In order to improve the durability of the asphalt pavement on a cement concrete bridge, this study investigated the effect of the modulus of the asphalt mixture at the bottom layer on the mechanical response of bridge pavement, along with a type of emerging bridge pavement structure. In addition, the design method and pavement performance of a high-modulus asphalt mixture were investigated using laboratory and field tests, and the life expectancy of the deck pavement structure was predicted based on the rutting deformation. The results showed that the application of a high-modulus asphalt mixture as the bottom asphalt layer decreased the stress level of the pavement structure. The new high-modulus asphalt mixture displayed excellent comprehensive performance, i.e., the dynamic stability reached 9632 times/mm and the fatigue life reached 1.65 million cycles. Based on the rutting depth prediction, using high-modulus mixtures for the bridge pavement prolonged the service life from the original 5 years to 10 years, which significantly enhanced the durability of the pavement structure. These research results could be of potential interest for practical applications in the construction industry.

The paper presents an underwater holographic sensor to study marine particles—a miniDHC digital holographic camera, which may be used as part of a hydrobiological probe for accompanying (background) measurements. The results of field measurements of plankton are given and interpreted, their verification is performed. Errors of measurements and classification of plankton particles are estimated. MiniDHC allows measurement of the following set of background data, which is confirmed by field tests: plankton concentration, average size and size dispersion of individuals, particle size distribution, including on major taxa, as well as water turbidity and suspension statistics. Version of constructing measuring systems based on modern carriers of operational oceanography for the purpose of ecological diagnostics of the world ocean using autochthonous plankton are discussed. The results of field measurements of plankton using miniDHC as part of a hydrobiological probe are presented and interpreted, and their verification is carried out. The results of comparing the data on the concentration of individual taxa obtained using miniDHC with the data obtained by the traditional method using plankton catching with a net showed a difference of no more than 23%. The article also contains recommendations for expanding the potential of miniDHC, its purpose indicators, and improving metrological characteristics.

AbstractTuberculosis (TB) preclinical testing relies on in vivo models including the mouse aerosol challenge model. The only method of determining colony morphometrics of TB infection in a tissue in situ is two-dimensional (2D) histopathology. 2D measurements consider heterogeneity within a single observable section but not above and below, which could contain critical information. Here we describe a novel approach, using optical clearing and a novel staining procedure with confocal microscopy and mesoscopy, for three-dimensional (3D) measurement of TB infection within lesions at sub-cellular resolution over a large field of view. We show TB morphometrics can be determined within lesion pathology, and differences in infection with different strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Mesoscopy combined with the novel CUBIC Acid-Fast (CAF) staining procedure enables a quantitative approach to measure TB infection and allows 3D analysis of infection, providing a framework which could be used in the analysis of TB infection in situ.
