The creep deformation of recycled construction and demolition waste (CDW) filler is an important factor affecting road performance. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests, including a compaction test, sieving test, California bearing ratio (CBR) test, creep test and unloading test are conducted on CDW filler. The engineering properties of different ratios of CDW mixture are systematically analyzed, the CBR value of CDW filler meets the requirements of an embankment. The creep type of CDW filler under a test load is stable creep, the results of the creep characteristics are analyzed from a microscopic point of view. The filler with a 7:2:1 ratio (brick slag: concrete: mortar) has the densest structure, which is dense and less porous, and the deformation is the smallest. Reasonable proportion control is the key to reducing embankment deformation. The improved Burgers model, which can better describe the creep characteristics of CDW filler, and the effects of load and ratio on the creep parameters are analyzed using the equivalent creep compliance. This study is of great significance for the promotion of CDW and meets the requirements of sustainable development.

Construction and Demolition Waste come from debris generated during construction, renovation and demolition of buildings, roads, and bridges. Recycling and reuse are essential in terms of sustainability, mainly from an environmental point of view. Although the recommendation of the use of these recycled aggregates is currently included in some technical specifications, its use is still not widespread due mainly to the lack of knowledge on their technical application. This work is a compilation of the recommendations proposed in the “Catalogue of road pavements with recycled aggregates”, supported by the construction of experimental stretches. It proposes different structural sections for road pavements by using recycled aggregates.

This paper discussed the recycled aggregates produced from construction and demolition waste and their utilization in concrete construction. Along with a brief overview of the engineering properties of recycled aggregates, the paper also summarizes the effect and use of recycled aggregates on the properties of fresh and hardened concrete. The recycled aggregates were treated with epoxy resin to reduce the water absorptions with different percentages of resin such as 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Epoxy resin is widely used in recent years owing to the enhancing of mechanical and durability of the concrete. This research also showed, recycled aggregate concrete are close proximity to normal concrete in terms of split tensile strength, compression strength and wet density. The low usage of resin was obtained good strength concrete compared to high percentage contained treated aggregates due to low bonding between material.

Abstract This article aims at presenting the economic impacts of implementing the basic principles of construction demolition waste management in terms of saving construction costs. Emphasis is placed on fulfilling the 3R principle, i.e. reducing waste, reusing it, and recycling resources and products. Construction and demolition waste represents the largest mass waste flow in the EU, e.g. in 2018, it represented 36% of the total waste production in the whole EU- 27. The European Union is gradually introducing measures to reduce the production of construction waste compared to the Czech Republic, where the share of construction demolition waste on the total production was up to 42% in 2018. This value exceeds the EU-27 average. The article analyses available statistical data from the national CZSO and the European statistical office EUROSTAT on the waste production classified according to EWC-STAT, which is a classification of waste according to Directive No. 2150/2002. Items monitoring the waste produced by the construction industry are listed on the 41st to 43rd place of the EWC-STAT list of all monitored waste. The data obtained allows comparing three branches of construction production, the 41st Building construction, 42nd Civil engineering, and 43rd Specialized construction activities. Another possibility to obtain data is to use a division according to the waste producer economic activity (CZ NACE). The data obtained in this way is compared with the performance indicators of the national economy. By comparing the size of the construction demolition waste production with the performance of the national economy (especially the GDP indicator), the degree of their interdependence was determined. The aim of the analysis is to assess the relation between the country’s economic performance and the production of construction and demolition waste. The next step was to perform an analysis from the point of view of the 3R principle in order to examine the impact of measures to reduce the construction demolition waste production in connection with the already initiated processes of its possible recycling or reuse.

Thermoplastic composites manufacturing could be a potential end-of-life option for separated construction and demolition waste. This study aims to find out how well the established ecodesign methodologies support the choice of recycled composite materials in new product design, and what challenges these materials offer to the designer. A product design case study was conducted by applying the ecodesign methodologies Environmental Quality Function Deployment and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution, to identify the main promoting and demoting factors from the designer’s point of view. The rate of recycled material is the main promoting factor, but biodegradability, recyclability, and the mixing of materials are usually demoting the composite use. The use of multiple criteria analysis techniques can work in favor of the composite, as the mechanical and physical properties are taken into consideration. The paper discusses the potential challenges the designer faces when evaluating the feasibility of using recycled material composites. The design suggests that new uses for waste that previously went to landfill, such as mineral wool, can be found with composite solutions.

Information Modelling and Management (IMM) methods for Most Economically Advantageous Tender (MEAT) can promote the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices. Despite the wide regulatory framework and existing drivers, Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) trends are still growing. The literature review analyzed IMM and CDW management implementation during design phases although few studies focused on Green Public Procurement (GPP) and CDW management integration from the Public Client’s point of view. This research aims at investigating the integration and efficiency of MEAT and IMM to promote the application of sustainable strategies focused on waste reduction and resource valorization. The study investigates the Public Client’s role in promoting sustainable practices, introducing digital material inventory and BIM during the design phases, and including environmental award criteria in the call for tender documents. A Design Build (DB) procurement model was considered in the case study of a brownfield renovation and the construction of a new school in northern Italy. The methodology provided the Public Client and included a method to evaluate the environmental impact of the bids, allowing for proper selective demolition planning, CDW decrease, and organization while promoting their integration in companies’ expertise and procedures. The replicability of the methodology is demonstrated by positive results of present and previous case studies.

Demolition and construction waste are among the topics that focus by many researchers. The ‎methods of reuse of waste materials must reduce the economic and environmental pressure of their ‎presence in various regions. Before 2014, the city of Mosul contained relatively small quantities of ‎demolition and construction debris, especially concrete rubble, asphalt materials, and bricks (they formed ‎approximately 80% of the construction and demolition debris). These materials increased very greatly ‎after the liberation operations and the widespread destruction of large parts of the city and became a great ‎problem in the reconstruction operations. There is no clear plan yet in the city to deal with this debris, and it ‎is disposed of by moving them to another place or burying them randomly when rebuilding the destroyed ‎parts. This study shows to deal with demolition and construction debris in Mosul after liberation and during ‎reconstruction operations. Also, many sources and data dealing with the re-use of demolition and ‎construction debris in the field of geotechnical engineering for operations to improve the engineering ‎properties of soils are presented. Many papers show the possibility of using construction and demolition waste as an alternative base or sub-base materials, fill for embankments, or increase durability and reduce the swelling ‎and plasticity ‎of clay.  The study concludes that the researches and data can be used to deal with ‎the rubble of demolition and construction in Mosul in a way that enables to benefit from it economically ‎and environmentally.‎
