The main subject of this study is to determine the optimal position of a fixed number of viscoelastic dampers on the surface of a thin (Kirchhoff-Love) plate. It is assumed that the dampers are described according to the generalized Maxwell model. In order to determine the optimal position of the dampers, a metaheuristic optimization method is used, called the particle swarm optimization method. The non-dimensional damping ratio of the first mode of the plate vibrations is assumed as an objective function in the task. The dynamic characteristics of the plate with dampers are determined by solving the non-linear eigenproblem using the continuation method. The finite element method is used to determine the stiffness matrix and the mass matrix occurring in the considered eigenproblem. The results of exemplary numerical calculations are also presented, where the final optimal arrangement of dampers on the surface of sample plates with different boundary conditions is shown graphically.

In this paper, we propose a new discrete-continuous codification of the Chu–Beasley genetic algorithm to address the optimal placement and sizing problem of the distribution static compensators (D-STATCOM) in electrical distribution grids. The discrete part of the codification determines the nodes where D-STATCOM will be installed. The continuous part of the codification regulates their sizes. The objective function considered in this study is the minimization of the annual operative costs regarding energy losses and installation investments in D-STATCOM. This objective function is subject to the classical power balance constraints and devices’ capabilities. The proposed discrete-continuous version of the genetic algorithm solves the mixed-integer non-linear programming model that the classical power balance generates. Numerical validations in the 33 test feeder with radial and meshed configurations show that the proposed approach effectively minimizes the annual operating costs of the grid. In addition, the GAMS software compares the results of the proposed optimization method, which allows demonstrating its efficiency and robustness.

Generally, approximate kinematic synthesis of planar linkage is studied using optimization method. But this method has two defects: i) the suitable initial guesses are hard to determine and ii) the global optimum solution is difficult to find. In this paper, a new method which can find all solutions to approximate kinematic synthesis of planar linkage is proposed. Firstly, we reduce the approximate synthesis problem to finding all solutions to polynomial equations. Polynomial continuation method is then used to find all solutions. Finally, all possible linkages can be obtained. Approximate syntheses of planar four-bar linkage for function generation, rigid-body guidance and path generation are studied in detail and three examples are given to illustrate the advantages of the proposed method.

Singapore’s high dependence on imported energy and food resources, and the lack of available land requires an efficient use of the built environment in order to increase energy and food autonomy. This paper proposes the concept of a productive façade (PF) system that integrates photovoltaic (PV) modules as shading devices as well as farming planters. It also outlines the design optimization process for eight PF prototypes comprising two categories of PF systems: Window façade and balcony façade, for four orientations. Five criteria functions describing the potential energy and food production as well as indoor visual and thermal performance were assessed by a parametric modelling tool. Optimal PF prototypes were subsequently obtained through the VIKOR optimization method, which selects the optimal design variants by compromising between the five criteria functions. East and West-facing façades require greater solar protection, and most façades require high-tilt angles on their shading PV panels. The optimal arrangement for vegetable planters involves two planters located relatively low with regard to the railing or window sill. Finally, the optimal façade designs were adjusted according to the availability of resources and the conditions and context of the Tropical Technologies Laboratory (T2 Lab) in Singapore where they are installed.

Environmental concerns, dependency on imported petroleum and lower cost alternative to gasoline always motivated policymakers worldwide to introduce electric vehicles in road transport system as a solution of those problems. The key issue in this system is recharging the electric vehicle batteries before they are exhausted. Thus, the charging station should be carefully located to make sure the vehicle users can access the charging station within its driving range. This paper therefore proposes a multi-objective optimization method for optimal placement of quick charging station. It intends to minimize the integrated cost of grid energy loss and travelling of vehicle to quick charging station. Due to contrary objectives, weighted sum method is assigned to generate reference Pareto optimal front and optimized the overture by genetic algorithm. The results show that the proposed method can find the optimal solution of quick charging station placement that can benefit electric vehicle users and power grid.

For patients with ineffective auditory nerve and complete hearing loss, Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) presents diversity of hearing sensations to help with sound consciousness and communication. At present, during the surgical intervention, surgeons use pre-operative patient images to determine optimal position of an ABI on cochlear nucleus on brainstem. When found, the optimal position is marked and mentally mapped by the surgeon. Next, the surgeon tries to locate the optimal position in patient’s head again and places the ABI. The aim of this project is to provide the surgeon with maximum clinical application accuracy guidance to store the optimal position for the implant, and to provide intuitive audio guidance for positioning the implant at the stored optimal position. By using three audio methods, in combination with visual information on Image-Guided Surgery (IGS), surgeon should spend less time looking at the screen, and more time focused on the patient.

AbstractThis paper investigates the optimal placement of piezoelectric actuators for the active vibration attenuation of beams. The governing equation of the beam is achieved by coupled first order shear deformation theory with two node element. The velocity feedback controller is designed and used to calculate the feedback gain and then apply to the beam. In order to search for the optimal placement of the piezoelectric actuators, a new optimization criterion is considered based on the use of genetic algorithm to reduce the displacement output of the beam. The proposed optimization technique has been tested for two boundary conditions configurations; clamped -free and clamped-clamped beam. Numerical examples have been provided to analyze the effectiveness of the proposed technic.

Because of the increasing energy demand, coalbed methane (CBM) which is a high-quality, clean new energy gets more and more national attention. As one of the keys of CBM's successful development, the investment of surface gathering system accounts for a significant proportion of the entire field's investment. This paper studied the optimization of CBM gathering system, combined with system process characteristics and the status of extraction and production. We chose a phased optimization method such that the optimization of entire system was divided into several subproblems, including well group's optimal partition, determination of gathering valve set's optimal position, optimization of trunk and branch pipe network's layout, and optimization of pipe diameter. Then we established optimization model such that the least investment costs of each stage were to be as objective function. When solving the model, full consideration of the low pressure and high complexity by which the CBM gathering and transportation pipeline network was characterized should be given. Through an example calculation, compared with artificial design result, the total investment decreased by 9.56%. We proved that the method has a good optimization effect by comparably analyzing the investment and construction scale of the existing pipe network and optimal pipe network.

In this paper, cables are proposed to connect the inerter and main frame for translation-to-rotation conversion, i.e., the cable-bracing inerter system (CBIS), with a magnified mass and enhanced damping effect. This novel configuration has the benefits of deformation relaxation at the connecting joints, easy installation, and an adaptive layout for nonconsecutive-story deployment. Dynamic motion equations were established for a single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) model equipped with a CBIS. The influence of dimensionless parameters, such as inertance-mass ratio, stiffness ratio and additional damping ratio on vibration mitigation were studied in terms of displacement response and force output. A single objective and multiple objective optimal design method were developed for a CBIS-equipped structure based on a performance-oriented design framework. Finally, the mitigation effect was illustrated and verified by a numerical simulation in a time-domain. The results showed that a CBIS is an effective structural response mitigation device used to mitigate the response of structural systems under earthquake excitation. Using the proposed optimization method, CBIS parameters can be effectively designed to satisfy the target vibration control level.

There is a need for the optimal positioning of protective devices to maximize customers satisfaction per their demands. Such arrangement advances the distribution system reliability to maximum achievable. Thus, radial distribution system (RDS) reliability can be improved by placing reclosers at suitable feeder sections. This article presents comprehensive details of an attempt to determine the reclosers’ optimal location in an RDS to maximize the utility profit by reliability improvement. Assessment of different reliability indices such as SAIDI, SAIFI, CAIFI, CAIDI, etc., with recloser placement, exhibits a considerable improvement in these indices in contrast with the absence of recloser. Consequently, a new bidirectional formulation has been proposed for the optimized arrangement of reclosers’. This formulation efficiently handles the bidirectional power flow, resulting from distributed generation (DG) unit (s) in the system. The proposed model has been solved for a test system by utilizing the Genetic algorithm (GA) optimization method. Later, test results conclude that reclosers’ optimal placement contributes significantly towards utility profit with minimum investment and outage costs.
