EFFECT OF BUILDING ORIENTATION ON INDOOR MICROCLIMATE OF CLASSROOM BUILDINGS AT THE KADUNA STATE UNIVERSITY

Current studies have discussed the significance of building orientation to the building indoor micro-climate and highlighted the need for more empirical research in other to establish the best orientation for buildings. Other scholars have argued that the impact of building orientation is insignificant and varies from one climatic region to another. This study, therefore, examines two prototype classroom buildings at the Kafanchan campus of Kaduna State University –Nigeria. The main purpose of the study is to determine the effect of building orientation on the indoor micro-climatic performance of two classroom buildings. Three Hobo Weather Data Loggers (HWDL) were used to collect data in the selected case-studies, and the third one was used as a benchmark. The study showed a remarkable difference in the indoor microclimatic conditions of the two buildings. The air temperature in case-study (B) is 1oC to 2oC lower than that of case-study (A) in all the respective time intervals. Also, 2% to 4% relative humidity difference was observed in favour of case-study (B). In conclusion, case-study (B) has demonstrated a more favourable indoor micro-climatic performance than case-study (A), and future simulation studies towards understanding the indoor micro-climatic performances of all possible building orientation options such as North-East/South-West, North-West/South-East, North/South and East/West in other to ascertain the optimum option are recommended. Entrepreneurship education was introduced in Nigerian higher education institutions as a compulsory course for students regardless of area of specialization in 2006/2007 academic session. This paper investigates the impact of selected teaching pedagogies (Normal lecture, Case study, Meeting entrepreneurs, Expert lecture, Incubation facility, Business plan development, Industry tour, Group discussion, Entrepreneurial stories, and Live project) used in delivering these courses on student’s entrepreneurial intention. Data were collected during scheduled lecture period with the aid of questionnaire on 405 students of universities, colleges of education and polytechnics in the three regions of Northern Nigeria (The North-East, North-Central, and North-West). Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was applied to select the participants. Descriptive along with inferential statistics were used for the analysis. Ordinal logistic regression was used to estimate the impact of each of these courses on students’ entrepreneurial intention. Findings indicate that four out of the ten teaching pedagogies namely; Normal lecture, Case study, Expert lecture, and Incubation facility lead a positive and significant impact on students’ entrepreneurial intentions. Therefore, higher education institutions in Nigeria need to set specific entrepreneurship education goals and come up with an effective blend of both conventional and innovative teaching pedagogies, through which students’ mental and practical capabilities can be improved towards successful entrepreneurship. The study also recommends that the teaching pedagogies applied in entrepreneurship education area must be in alignment with the career interests of the students and with the objectives for which the course is offered.

Cable tensile forces in winch-assist harvesting have been investigated in order to assess the safety concerns of the technology. However, the literature is lacking, particularly in regards to the impact of winch design. In this study, a Summit Winch Assist tethering a feller-director on ground slopes up to 77% was monitored for four days. The cable tensile forces were simultaneously recorded at the harvesting and anchor machine at a frequency of 100 Hz. Cameras and GNSS devices enabled a time study of the operations and the recording of machine positions. Winch functionality and design were disclosed by the manufacturer and used for the interpretation of the results. The cable tensile forces reached 296 kN at the harvesting machine and 260 kN at the anchor machine. The slow negotiation of obstacles while moving downhill recorded the highest peaks, mainly due to threshold settings of the winch in the brake system activation. Lower but significant peaks were also recorded during stationary work tasks. The peaks, however, were limited to a few events and never exceeded the endurance limit of the cable. Overall, the study confirmed recent findings in cable tensile force analysis of active winch-assist operations and provided evidence of the underlaying mechanisms that contribute to cable tensile forces.

The industrial policy in the UK and in Portugal, as in most EU countries, seeks to attract new investment capacity, to create jobs and to promote the impact of the so-called "demonstration efect" of "greenfield" development strategies pursued in the new plants of inward investors on existing or "brownfield" plants. This industrial policy focus is particularly evident in the automobile industry.This paper compares the industrial policy oriented towards the automobile industry in the UK and in Portugal. Two recent "greenfield" investments are analised: Nissan in the North-East region (UK) and Ford/VW in the Setúbal Peninsula (Portugal), as well as three "brownfield" plants: Ford Halewood and GM Vauxhall Ellesmere Port in the North-West region (UK) and Renault in Setúbal (Portugal). The first part starts with a discussion of industrial policy in the automobile sector, the role of "greenfield" development strategies and the "demonstration effect" on "brownfield" plants. Then, the limits of new inward investment are pointed out, basically their problems and restrictions. Afterwards, the structural barriers to the "demonstration effect" within "brownfield" plants are outlined and some possabilities for alternative "brownfield" development strategies are presented.

Abstract Introduction/Objective Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute document GP44 recommends samples avoid temperatures >22°C during sample transport and storage. Outdoor courier lockboxes used in external sample transport can experience extreme temperatures (>40°C) in the summer. Ice (frozen at -20°C) and cold (refrigerated at 4-8°C) packs can be used to reduce internal lockbox temperatures during hot summer days. Unfortunately, there are no universally accepted instructions to maintain internal lockbox temperatures during these conditions. Therefore, our goal was to elucidate the impact of placing ice and cold packs at two specific time points to mitigate external summer temperatures in two commercially available outdoor courier lockboxes used at our institution. Methods/Case Report Two pairs of uniquely manufactured courier lockboxes (steel vs. urethane polymer) were placed outside in direct sunlight in Nashville, Tennessee during the second week of June 2021. Ambient outdoor and lockbox temperatures were monitored using data loggers during a four-day cycle. Each type of lockbox design had a control with no ice or cold packs. These controls were then compared to each experimental, paired lockbox with four ice packs placed at 8am and replaced with four cold packs at 4pm. Results (if a Case Study enter NA) The mean ambient outdoor temperature over these four days was 27.7°C (range: 22.2-39.8°C). Temperatures within the steel and urethane polymer lockboxes without ice or cold packs was 28.3°C (range: 22.4-40.8°C) and 31.6°C (range: 23.8-41.0°C), respectively. The addition of four ice packs at 8am and replaced with four cold packs at 4pm reduced temperatures in the steel box to 24.3°C (range: 17.4-27.9°C) whereas in the urethane polymer box temperatures were reduced to 13.4°C (range: 6.6-18.1°C). Conclusion Temperatures inside outdoor lockboxes can increase in summer commonly above the outdoor ambient temperature. Standardizing instructions for ice and cold packs can reduce internal outdoor courier lockbox temperatures during summer months, especially in urethane polymer lockboxes.

Feasibility of the Sar Technique on Quartz Sand of Terraces of NW Himalaya: A Case Study from DevprayagOptically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating technique based on the Single Aliquot Regenerative dose (SAR) protocol is being used increasingly as a means of establishing sediment burial age in the late Quaternary studies. Thermal transfer, low and changing luminescence sensitivity of quartz grains of young sedimentary belts of the New Zealand Alps and the north-east Himalaya poses problems in using SAR protocol. Records of active tectonics and signatures of palaeo-climate are preserved in the Quaternary - Holocene terrace sediments. Therefore, to unfold the history of successive tectonic and palaeo-climate events, robust chronological technique is needed. Palaeoflood deposits in NW Lesser Himalayan region receive quartz from the weathering of various rock types such as quartzite and phyllite in the Alaknanda Basin. A series of tests e.g. dose recovery, preheat plateau, thermal recuperation and change in sensitivity, were performed to check the suitability of quartz grains collected from the terrace sediment of Devprayag of the NW Himalaya, for OSL studies. Inferences were drawn regarding the source of the quartz grains on the basis of the geochemistry and luminescence intensity of the terrace sediment. The study shows that though quartz from the North West Himalaya are low in luminescence intensity but the reproducibility of De value makes the quartz sand suitable for SAR dating technique. Relation between luminescence intensity with CIA values help to predict the provenance of quartz sand. Tests show that the quartz from NW Himalaya is suitable for SAR protocol in OSL.

<p>Overall, global forests are expected to contribute about a quarter of pledged mitigation under the Paris Agreement, by limiting deforestation and by encouraging forest regrowth.</p><p>Secondary Forests in the Neo-tropics have a large climate mitigation potential, given their ability to sequester carbon up to 20 times faster than old-growth forests. However, this rate does not account for the spatial patterns in secondary forest regrowth influenced by regional and local-scale environmental and anthropogenic disturbance drivers.</p><p>Secondary Forests in the Brazilian Amazon are expected to play a key role in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, however, the Amazon is a large and geographically complex region such that regrowth rates are not uniform across the biome.</p><p>To understand the impact of key drivers we used a multi-satellite data approach with the aim of understanding the spatial variations in secondary forest regrowth in the Brazilian Amazon. We mapped secondary forest area and age using a land-use-land-cover dataset – MapBiomas – and, combined with the European Space Agency Aboveground Carbon dataset, constructed regional regrowth curves for the year 2017.</p><p>We found large variations in the regrowth rates across the Brazilian Amazon due to large-scale environmental drivers such as rainfall and shortwave-radiation. Regrowth rates are similar to previous pan-Amazonian estimates in the North-West (3 ±1.0 MgC ha<sup>-1</sup> yr<sup>-1</sup>), which are double than those in the North-East Amazon (1.3 ±0.3 MgC ha<sup>-1</sup> yr<sup>-1</sup>). The impact of anthropogenic disturbances, namely fire and repeated deforestation prior to the most recent regrowth only reduces the regrowth by 20% in the North-West (2.4 ±0.8 MgC ha<sup>-1</sup> yr<sup>-1</sup>) compared to 55% in the North-East (0.8 ±0.8 MgC ha<sup>-1</sup> yr<sup>-1</sup>). Overall, secondary forest carbon stock of 294 TgC in the year 2017, could have been 8% higher with avoided fires and repeat deforestation.<strong> </strong>We found that the 2017 area of secondary forest, which occupies only ~4% of the Brazilian Amazon biome, can contribute significantly (~5.5%) to Brazil’s net emissions reduction targets, accumulating ~19.0 TgC yr<sup>-1</sup>until 2030 if the current area of secondary forest is maintained (13.8 Mha). However,this value reduces rapidly to less than 1% if only secondary forests older than 20 years are preserved (2.2 Mha).</p><p>Preserving the remaining old-growth forest carbon stock and implementing legal mechanisms to protect and expand secondary forest areas are key to realising the potential of secondary forest as a nature-based climate change mitigation solution.</p>

A case study that examines the impact of emergency vehicle preemption on closely spaced arterial traffic signals is reported. The study was conducted on State Route (SR) 26, a principal arterial and main thoroughfare that connects Interstate 65 with US-52 on the east side of Lafayette, Indiana. Four coordinated intersections along SR-26 were examined by using seven preemption paths and three different transition algorithms (smooth, add, and dwell). The number of preemption calls in the simulation period varied from one to three for equal simulation periods. The findings generally show that a single preemption call had a minimal effect on the overall travel time and delay through the network. The results also indicate that the smooth transitioning algorithm performed the best with most scenarios and paths for both the arterial and the side streets. When multiple emergency vehicles preempt at closely spaced time intervals, the impact of preemption was more severe. For the network studied, the most severe impact on arterial travel time observed was an increase in the average arterial travel time on the order of 20 to 30 s. The study focused on emergency vehicle preemption, but the general procedures described could also be applied to railroad preemption or transit priority.
