Clinical Relevance Increased etching periods may impair the bond strength to ceramics, while the use of an unfilled resin after silane may improve bond strength. The application of a bonding resin may also provide better infiltration to the irregularities created on etched surfaces, irrespective of the conditioning time.

Clinical Relevance Compared to self-etch and self-adhesive luting systems, the two etch-and-rinse luting agents evaluated in the current study provided more reliable bonding when used to bond indirect resin-based composite restorations to sound dentin. On the contrary, the self-adhesive luting system showed the highest mean bond strength for the cementation of glass ceramic restorations.

Clinical Relevance The effect of surface preparation was adhesive-dependent. Improvements in resin-enamel bond strength after enamel preparation were observed only for AdheSE and Optibond Solo plus Self-Etch Primer. Among the self-etch systems, mild, self-etch Clearfil SE Bond showed the highest bond strength values. No degradation of resin-enamel bonds was observed after 12 months of water storage, regardless of the adhesive tested.

Clinical Relevance For reliable repair of amalgam restorations, including dentin fractures, the amalgam surface should first be silica coated; dentin/enamel should be etched, washed and rinsed thoroughly. Then, amalgam should be silanized and primer/bonding should be applied onto dentin.

This study evaluated the effect of different surface treatments on the tensile bond strength between lithium disilicate glass-ceramics, resin cement, and dentin. Fifty truncated cone-shape glass-ceramics were divided into five groups (n = 10): G1, control: 10% hydrofluoric acid (HF); G2, Nd:YAG laser + silane; G3, Sil + Nd:YAG laser; G4, graphite + Nd:YAG laser + Sil; and G5, graphite + Sil + Nd:YAG laser. Fifty human third-molars were cut to cylindrical shape and polished to standardize the bonding surfaces. The glass-ceramic specimens were bonded to dentin with a dual-cured resin cement and stored in distilled water for 24 h at 37ºC. Tensile testing was performed on a universal testing machine (10 Kgf load cell at 1 mm/min) until failure. The bond strength values (mean ± SD) in MPa were G1 (9.4 ± 2.3), G2 (9.7 ± 2.0), G3 (6.7 ± 1.9), G4 (4.6 ± 1.1), and G5 (1.2 ± 0.3). Nd:YAG laser and HF improve the bond strength between lithium disilicate glass-ceramics, resin cement, and dentin. The application of a graphite layer prior to Nd:YAG laser irradiation negatively affects this bonding and presented inferior results.

Clinical Relevance The presence of a provisional restoration containing eugenol for one week or longer does not interfere with the bond strength of self-etching adhesives to dentin. If a eugenol-based provisional restoration remained in place for only 24 hours, a delay of one week re-establishes proper bond strength.

Clinical Relevance After calibration of the restoration procedure, three operators experienced differences in tooth-composite interface morphology and microleakage formation. These differences reflect technique-sensitivity of the etch-and-rinse adhesive. The lowest microleakage on dentin was related to an enhanced interface integrity. After additional application of an adhesive component, sealing of the enamel and dentin was partially enhanced, but microleakage formation did not decrease. These results are helpful in the comparative evaluation of other bonding systems.

Clinical Relevance Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation produced morphological alterations on enamel, which may adversely influence the bond strength of certain adhesives, depending on their approach and composition.
