Maj. Gen George E. Pickett’s attack on New Bern in January 1863 results in a fiasco. Having failed utterly to take the city after seven hours of fighting, the 13,000 troops retreat back to Kinston. On the way, they overwhelm a small outpost battery and capture ninety-seven men of the 2nd North Carolina Union Volunteers. Pickett labels a number of them Confederate deserters-a dubious claim-and, following cursory trials, he hangs twenty-two North Carolinians. The atrocity shocks even his own troops and provokes outrage in the U.S. War Department, which pursues Pickett as a war criminal, forcing him to flee to Canada in disguise.

This chapter discusses the circumstances of Ramseur's promotion to the state militia after his resignation from the U.S. Army. It reports that Ramseur applied for a commission in the new Confederate army. The chapter notes that on the way south, Ramseur stopped to see his mentor, Daniel Harvey Hill, who was concluding his tenure as superintendent at the North Carolina Military Institute in Charlotte, and quickly received an appointment as first lieutenant. The chapter further notes that Ramseur was offered a more attractive opportunity on the way to his posting in the Department of Mississippi. It reports that he was immediately elected as captain of the eponymous light battery (Company A, Tenth North Carolina State Troops), and that, within a month's time, he was promoted to the rank of major in the state militia.

This paper focuses on the encounters between Italy and Siam at the dawn of the twentieth century, as it was the most dynamic period of Italian settlement in the modernising Siam. The paper analyses the development of Siamese modernisation as a challenging opportunity for Italian entrepreneurs and professionals, thanks to a healthy diplomatic relation between the two countries. Compared to the main characteristics of the Italian diaspora, the Italian colony in Siam stands out because of the fruits of its creative production. Siam was described as a symbol of tradition, not very different from the way China was often viewed, while the West was regarded as a source of modernity. With this perspective, the fact that Siam herself initiated the modernisation process, as well as the recruitment of Italians as part of the government's team in public works, architectural construction and civil engineering, was emphasised less than the part played by Italians in transforming the image of the Siamese capital. The paper examines how the encounters between Italy and Siam developed, attempting to do this from both Siamese and Italian perspectives, since both shared cultural memories, empirical evidence of cultural encounters and transculturality.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation sponsored research to examine the potential for developing school walk zone guidelines for the state. State law establishes a zone within a 1.5-mi radius of a school in which school bus transportation is not provided, “unless road or other conditions shall make it inadvisable to do so.” Quantifiable guidelines are needed to clearly define the exception conditions to this law and to guide school officials in establishing and evaluating walking and biking corridors within this zone. To examine the opportunities, issues, and risks associated with school walk zones, the project team conducted a survey of North Carolina school transportation directors, focus groups with parents, students, and school and local government officials, and a spatial analysis of school-related pedestrian crashes. Results and conclusions led to several recommendations. They include clarifying and defining key terms, such as “walk zone” and “no-transport zone”; developing quantifiable guidelines to help school officials identify preferred walking corridors; and establishing local partnerships with representatives from public works, schools, departments of transportation, police, and community organizations. Also, pedestrian and bicycle safety and access issues should be included in the local school siting process, and pedestrian and bicycle training should be increased in elementary and middle schools. Other recommendations are to change the crash data collection process to better identify school commute crashes and to conduct further research on school walk zones and no-transport zones, to better understand their impact on modal split, school campus traffic congestion, school commute safety, and public costs.

Responding to concerns about a textbook reading that students perceived as heteronormative, cisnormative, and antifeminist, we formed a partnership between students and faculty to reflect on the situation and to workshop ways to move forward. Our discussions were informed by our situation: a public HBCU in North Carolina, a state that had been in the headlines for anti-LGBT legislation. Many students reported that prior to our work they had not felt they had power to challenge the authoritative nature of texts in a classroom, even when they found those texts to be incorrect or inappropriate. This project empowered students to work with faculty and the publisher to change the textbook itself as well as the way certain rhetorical content was taught in our institution.
