Some Remarks on the Role of the Third Statute of Lithuania in Courses on National Law at the Turn of the Nineteenth CenturySummary The long-term validity of the Third Lithuanian Statute of 1588 is a factor often highlighted in the scientific literature devoted to the history of the Lithuanian-Russian lands. The two and a half centuries that the codex operated have left a lasting imprint on the legal relations of these vast territories. In Belarusian lands once belonging the Republic and separated from it by the First Partition, the Statute was abolished as a consequence of the repression after the November Uprising in 1831. In the western and south-western guberniyas, the Statute survived somewhat longer; it was repealed in 1840. In academic circles, both Polish and international, the post-Partition fate of the Lithuanian codex has not yet been clarified. It seems that one aspect which is worth paying attention to in studies on the condition of the Statute after the Partitions is its role in the teaching of law in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Surviving sources, in form of the lecture courses, students’ notes, reports intended for educational authorities and examination tables leave no doubt that the Statute of Lithuania was the very basis of national law lecture courses, both at the University of Vilnius, as well as at the High School and then Lyceum in Kremenets and the Academy of Polotsk. In the lectures of Adam Powstański, Ignacy Danilowicz, Aleksander Korowicki, Józef Jaroszewicz, Ignacy Ołdakowski, and Aleksander Mickiewicz, the Statute was always depicted as one of the most important sources of national law, which maintained its currency, and whose provisions were cited most frequently to illustrate the legal institutions under discussion.

Owen Phillips grew up in Sydney, Australia, and following a distinguished record at a State high school and in the final NSW school examinations, he enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney in 1948. In the third year, he transferred to the Faculty of Science to do more advanced courses in Mathematics and Physics (with the idea of going back to Engineering after one year and qualifying for a Science degree on the way). Owen did so well, however, that he went on to do a fourth year in Mathematics and graduated with First Class Honours.

Abstract. Hungarian presenters gave several papers on this project at cartographic conferences and published articles on the state of the work in the past decade. The project undertaken by the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) serves the saving of cultural heritage, namely a globe, a significant work of art. The project is named after its maker, Perczel. The work, which lasted for more than ten years with interruptions, was crowned by the birth of three imposing artistic copies of the globe. This part of the project completed in half a year was organized by the Archiflex Studio and led by Zsuzsanna Lente, restorer artist. The first copy decorates the office of the Hungarian prime minister in the former Carmelite cloister in the Buda Castle. The second copy is placed in the National Széchényi Library, where the original globe is kept. The third copy went to the University Library of ELTE. The physical embodiment of the globe makes it a real public property: Perczel’s globe is a work of art that represents great scientific and cultural values. The present paper reviews shortly the manuscript globe made by Perczel in 1862, and presents the stages of the digital re-creation and restoration of the globe map carried out at the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics at ELTE, which led to its physical reconstruction, the birth of its artistic copies. Finally, some cartographic “juicy bits” follow: the representation of non-existent “ghost” islands on the globe and some interesting graphical solutions that are unusual today.

A multisample factor analysis identified two different solutions, a 3-factor solution from the high school sample of 439 subjects and a 4-factor solution from both the university sample of 200 subjects and an obese sample of 142 subjects. However, in the first sample Factor 1 included the same items which formed Factor 2 and Factor 4 in both the second and the third samples. This suggests that the structure of the questionnaire can be adequately described by four different factors. The analysis of the factor loadings also indicated that six items should be removed (Items 2, 3, 10, 11, 17, 19) from the Italian version.

At least three reasons support the presentation of dr. Augustina Stegenška in this brochure or exhibition catalogue. This is a portrait of a young educated and talented art historian who worked in Maribor, a dedicated librarian of the Historical Society for Slovenian Styria, for whom the collection of archival data was a real challenge, and accurate recording led to many research discussions and contributions. The University Library of Maribor keeps a part of Stegenšek's written legacy, which it strives to digitize and in this way make it accessible. The third reason is in cooperation with art history students at the Faculty of Arts, the University of Maribor, with whom the library under the mentorship of Assoc. prof. dr. Marjeta Ciglenečki has been participating in many projects or exhibitions for many years. This time the collaboration was marked by the centenary of Stegenšek's death with a display of his extensive cultural and historical oeuvre. Selected interpretations of Stegenšek's art history articles or books contributed by students of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Maribor are an interesting starting point for further research in this field.
