AbstractTwo Norway rats, Rattus norvegicus, were found to be naturally infected with Echinococcus multilocularis in Japan. One of them was simultaneously infected with at least three different sized metacestodes of Taenia taeniaeformis. These two R. norvegicus rats and another R. norvegicus naturally infected with T. taeniaeformis and Capillaria hepatica were examined to see if they showed any antibody responses against these two cestode parasites with the view to obtaining more information on the importance of rats as the intermediate host for E. multilocularis. These R. norvegicus showed very poor antibody responses against the two cestode species, although the Wistar rats, R. rattus, experimentally infected with a single smaller sized metacestode of T. taeniaeformis showed stronger responses not only against T. taeniaeformis but also against E. multilocularis. Therefore the three R. norvegicus naturally infected with E. multilocularis and/or T. taeniaeformis demonstrated virtually no immune response, at least against these cestodes.

Present investigation shows that the extract of C. aeruginosa attenuates DMBA-induced spleen carcinogenesis in Wistar rats. Three-week female Wistar rats were treated with three different C. aeruginosa extract doses (CA1: 40 mg/200 g body weight, BW; CA2: 80 mg/200 g BW; CA3: 160 mg/200 g BW) and were induced with DMBA after one-week administration of these doses. A commercial immunostimulant, and DMBA only were also given to each group as positive and negative control, respectively. The development of tumors was evaluated by investigating the incidence of tumor and tumor multiplicity during the experiment. Spleen mass index and histological parameters such as white pulp, centrum germinativum, and marginalis zone were also examined. Based on our study, the administration of C. aeruginosa extract during and after carcinogen induction gave several impacts on rat carcinogenesis. At the extract dose of 80 mg/200 g BW, tumor incidence of animals were least (P<0.05). However, all doses did not show any effect to the spleen mass index, though the highest dose (160 mg/200 g BW) was found to cause changes in white pulp and marginalis zone boards. This trend indicates that it takes higher dose to cause an immune response effect reaching the organs.

HGF is one of the factors taking part in regeneration and recovery of liver after injury. The article is dedicated to the study of influence of single HGF intake on the indices of non-specific immune response in rats after 70% liver resection in the early postoperative period. Research was conducted on 42 six-months white male Wistar rats of 250–300 g. It was revealed that level of segmentonuclear neutrophils and lymphocytes in the group with HGF intake stand at normal level on the 2nd day and normalizes to the 11th day that testifies to the decrease of inflammatory response. Increased level of leukocytes and monocytes is registered in the group with HGF intake. Also integrity of non-specific resistance in the early postoperative period on the 2nd day is registered. Suppression of phagocytosis indices with preservation of functional activity of phagocytes was registered to the 11th day.
