Fundraising in education: a road map to the ask (Preprint)

UNSTRUCTURED This is a time of economic, societal, and political challenges in higher education. Traditional funding models must change as governments decrease funding and often freeze tuition at a domestic level. As a result, there is an increasing need to diversify their business models, including revenue streams. Because of this, universities are more focused than ever on fundraising dollars. To diversify their traditional revenue streams, universities are increasing their international student recruitment efforts and are expanding their research boundaries as global actors and agents of change. Therefore, interest in raising significant funds from private sources is stronger than ever, leading to the need for a more sophisticated fundraising approach. The purpose of this article is to raise awareness about the critical role medical educators play in helping universities with their global impact and fundraising efforts. Medical educators must become agents of change and reflect on strategies to ensure the successful implementation of fundraising programs in academic environments toward achieving maximum impact.

In this paper, digital technologies development was analyzed as the basis for the so-called “fourth industrial revolution” with the potential for the qualitative transformation of the Ukrainian economy based on EU countries’ experience. Industry 4.0 is a new control chain over the entire chain of creating value throughout the product lifecycle. When developing an economic policy, it is important to pay attention to Industry 4.0. It increases productivity, produces new, better, and individualized products, and implements new business models based on “undermining” innovations. A comparative analysis of national initiatives I4.0 with their characteristics according to the main dimensions, including funding, focus, direction, was conducted. Particular attention was paid to considering deterrents to the successful implementation and enforcement of the I4.0 initiative in European countries. The factors of successful implementation of I4.0 initiatives in the EU countries were analyzed. Drawing on the analysis of the European experience of digital transformations in industry and national economies in general, the necessity of critical focus of such transformations in Ukraine was highlighted, and the need for state support of industrial transformation was substantiated. The emphasis was placed on the cooperation development between stakeholders within the implementation of Industry 4.0 – it is necessary to create national and regional 4.0 platforms, following the example of EU countries, which would bring together government institutions, businesses, and academics. The successful positioning of the Ukrainian modern industrial complex on the world markets depends on the high level of the interconnected system providing factors that characterize its development process. Considering the influence of a list of inhibiting factors on implementing the country’s industry accelerated development, a set of measures needed to transform Ukraine’s industry based on European experience was substantiated.

The study of four comparable Canadian universities in Ontario, this article analyzed background documents from the government and the institutions, carried out site visits to the campuses of the institutions, and interviewed senior faculty and staff working in the area of internationalization. The main reasons for internationalization—particularly international student recruitment—were portrayed as the value of student diversity as well as revenue generation. The institutional cultures influence responses to globalization as well.

This qualitative study examined how feminist online publications can adopt social enterprise business models. The focus group analysis of the audiences of Refinery29, Bustle, HelloGiggles, and Jezebel first explored the audience's outlook on the commodification of feminism. The focus group also considered plausible ways of adopting social enterprise initiatives to diversify revenue streams of these publications, continue promoting gender equality, and to better establish the images of the publications. During four focus groups, twenty total participants shared a variety of feedback, including their opinions on the commodification of the feminist movement and the commodification of editorial content. They talked about how their purchasing decisions are affected by their desire to contribute to the social good. Other themes identified during the study were white feminism, the trivialization of feminist content, and the importance of companies' policies.

Digital news publishers strive to balance revenue streams in their business models: as standard advertising declines, alternatives for sustaining digital journalism arise in the forms of sponsored content, user donations and payments—one-off purchases, subscriptions or memberships, public or private grants, electronic commerce, events and consulting. An exhaustive study found 2874 active online news publications in Spain, and it observed the adoption of such models in early 2021. Advertising remains the most popular source of income for digital news operations (85.8%) and most sites rely on just one or two revenue streams (74.5%). We compare the cases in our census by their origin (digital-native or non-native), geography (local/regional or national/global) and topic scope (generalist or specialized). We find that traditional, national and specialized online media have a broader and more innovative revenue mix than digital-native, regional or local and general-interest news outlets. The comprehensiveness of this pioneering study sheds light for the first time on the risk that the lack of diversification and innovation in funding sources may imperil the financial sustainability of some online news operations in Spain, mostly those with a smaller scope and no backing from a traditional business, according to the results we present here.

In a constantly changing business environment, with increasing digitisation and fourth industrial revolution blurring the traditional value creation boundaries, companies need to explore ways to push the limits to remain competitive. Business model innovation offers companies the dynamic capability to differentiate business models and find innovative revenue streams while reducing costs. As such, the question arises as to how company may use business model innovation to remain competitive as the world digitises. Based on a literature review and empirical research involving six case studies, a three pronged approach in support of business model innovation is proposed. Business model innovation has the potential to push the limits when company executives and academia focus on the interrelation between drivers, process and components. Moreover, both effective and ineffective practices based on the research are presented. In conclusion, for companies to use business model innovation in pushing the limits, there is need to respond to the business model innovation drivers, adopt a systematic process and change at least one or more business model components and taking into account the interactions between these three concepts. One of the private hospital successful implementation the National Health Insurance with cost efficiency without neglecting the quality of service is An-Nisa Hospital. This study aimed to finding out the strategy of An-Nisa Hospital in the implementation of the National Health Insurance with Balanced Scorecard. The research was conducted in May 2018 using qualitative approach. Data was collected through in-depth interview to 7 informants from hospital and 2 informants from BPJS Kesehatan. The subjects were selected purposively and the data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The results show that there are several strategies that have been developed and implemented, including: adding types of services, increasing the capacity of inpatients and polyclinics, increasing doctor practice slots, completing medical equipment, applying the principle of low cost and increasing working capital, choosing JKN patients as target market, develop 5 values propotition, complaint management, develop standard operating procedures, develop drug formulary and clinical pathways, carry out operational and audit controls, build business models, form casemix teams and claim management, develop training, giving reward and good salaries, build a competitive work environments, and pay attention to employee career paths. Through this strategy, An-Nisa Hospital is able to implement the JKN Program well and still record a surplus without sacrificing service quality

The journalism industry faces difficulties in creating sustainable business models for the digital age. Communications research has looked at this challenge through case studies and panoramic perspectives, but there’s a lack of holistic views and a need for focus on value creation. In this situation, this paper presents a systematic literature review that confirms there’s a clear lack of standardization between the case studies, whose main focus have been revenue streams at the expense of deeper analysis of other key factors for the economic success of a company, like the value proposition. With the aim to contribute to the solution of this problem, the paper also proposes a methodological tool that allows future researchers to analyze the business model of a journalism company in a standard way with a view to facilitate better comparisons between companies and to understand success patterns of sustainable business models in order to promote innovation and knowledge exchange.
