AbstractBackgroundDespite great advancement in treatment of sepsis, mortality of sepsis remains unacceptably high, even with the modern antibiotic and intensive care technologies. Considering the key role of immune dysfunction in sepsis pathophysiology, different treatments were evaluated, but failed to improve survival of patients. Natural remedies have been tested in various studies to overcome sepsis. In this study, we aim to review some of the evidence from clinical,MethodsThe following databases were searched up to March 2014: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Ovid and Google Scholar using combination of Mesh term. AllResultsOut of 95 relevant studies, the inclusion criteria were met for 79 cases. Among them, 18 studies were performed on humans. The most herbal medicine, includingConclusionsModulation of immune system, anti-inflammatory activities and improvement of survival were the action of herbal medicine. A monovalent approach is not enough for treatment of sepsis, we recommend further studies to identify active component of herbal and use them in combination. Also an animal model of sepsis does not exactly mimic human sepsis, so more clinical studies should be performed. With no new drug on the horizon, herbal medicine will be promising for treatment of sepsis.

By cytophysiological methods, the self-incompatibility mechanism of the breeding system in Lilium longiflorum has been examined with particular reference to the synthesis, location and nature of the stylar factors involved in the control of pollen tube development. A ‘bioassay’ has been developed by which the effect of stylar extracts on pollen tube elongation may be investigated. With use of this system, a crude fraction of proteins from the stylar fluid has been shown to inhibit pollen tube growth only when protein fractions from ‘self’ styles are used. The proteins of this fraction have been analysed by thin-layer gel electrofocusing. Changes in the profiles thus obtained following selfing and a heat treatment known to inactivate the self-incompatibility response indicate a highly polarized glycoprotein to be an active component of the system. The various ways by which such a glycoprotein could control pollen tube elongation are considered in detail, and these events in Lilium are discussed in the light of our knowledge of other self-incompatibility systems operating in angiosperms.

AbstractA health-care workstation is the means by which a professional interacts with the information artifacts of health care. However, a major transformation is taking place in the software architecture of health-care systems that alters significantly the role of the workstation. Health-care systems are becoming more complex in response to the need to support “extended enterprises” across regions, and provide both horizontal and vertical integration capabilities. Component-based software methodologies are being introduced that match well the needs of these large systems and the component services they must integrate. In the component-based framework, a workstation functions less as a “portal” for information transactions carried out on distant host computers, and more as the “orchestrator” for tasks involved in assembling, organizing, presenting, and manipulating information. Applications residing on workstations access distributed software components that carry out encapsulated functions for the application. Componentintegration methodologies include both formal and ad hoc approaches; the principal emerging technologies are the World Wide Web (WWW), CORBA, Java, OLE, and OpenDoc. An emerging strategy appears to be that of developing application integration environments that encompass and support all of these integration methodologies. Component-based approaches also facilitate standardization at the message level, as messages to classes of components can serve to focus such standardization.

Cognitive psychology offers an important contribution to the understanding of the mechanisms underlying intelligence. In this paper, we synthesize the research showing that, among the different cognitive mechanisms associated with intelligence, working memory has a particularly high explanatory power, especially when considered in its active component involving not only the maintenance (as in short-term memory) but also the manipulation of information. The paper considers two main implications of this finding for the applied and clinical fields. For a start, we examine how intelligence tests take into consideration working memory. Secondly, we consider the highly debated literature on the effects of working memory training on intellectual performance. Theoretical and applied implications for the relationship between working memory and intelligence are discussed.
