Titanium is well known as an implant material having excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties for use in bone substitute. In the present study, to enhance the biocompatibility of titanium, its surface was modified by hydrothermal treatment using dilute alkaline solution. After hydrothermal treatment, anatase predominantly formed on a titanium surface. The anatase phase showed high crystallinity and c-axis orientation. The anatase layers with leaf-like and pyramid-like forms were observed on titanium autoclaved at 120 °C and 240 °C, respectively. The anatase formation and its morphology were significantly related to the autoclaving temperature. To estimate the cellular compatibility of the autoclaved titanium, mouse osteoblast-like cells (MC3T3-E1 cells) were cultured on the autoclaved titanium surface. After 7- days culturing, the number of the cells harvested from the autoclaved titanium was higher than that from untreated titanium. The surface modification of titanium by hydrothermal treatment involved the proliferation of the cells on its surface.

The effects of an Nd:YAG laser interaction with titanium target using laser radiation at wavelengths 1.064 or 0.532 μm (40 picoseconds pulse duration) were studied. Modification of target surfaces at laser energy densities of 2.4 and 10.3 J/cm2 (λ1 laser= 1.064 μm) and 1.1 J/cm2 (λ2 laser= 0.532 μm) are reported in this article. Qualitatively, the titanium surface modification can be summarized as follows: (i) ablation of the titanium surface in the central zone of the irradiated area for both laser wavelengths; (ii) appearance of a hydrodynamic feature like resolidified droplets of the material (λ1 laser= 1.064 μm), as well as formation of the wave-like microstructures (λ2 laser= 0.532 μm); and (iii) appearance of plasma, in front of the target, with both laser wavelengths.

Film-coating on the surface of titanium was investigated by hydrothermal treatments with a maximal pressure of 6.3 MPa (280°C) in CaO solution and water to improve bioactivity and biocompatibility. As a result, calcium titanate (CaTiO3) film was formed on the titanium surface. The surface-coated titanium was immersed in a simulated body fluid (SBF) to estimate its bioactivity. Apatite precipitation was observed on all hydrothermal-treated titanium surfaces after immersion in SBF for 4 weeks. In particular, the apatite precipitation of titanium treated with 6.3 MPa in CaO solution was clearer and larger in amount than those of all other hydrothermal-treated specimens. The results suggest that surface modification of titanium with high-pressure hydrothermal treatments can be expected to improve bioactivity and biocompatibility.
