Slopes of normal consolidation lines in one-dimensional and isotropic consolidation tests done on isotropically prepared samples of two soils are compared. It has been observed that the consolidation lines are not necessarily parallel. The ratios between the two slopes have been found to be 0.53 and 0.884 for kaolin and Dundas soil respectively. It is suggested that the value of this ratio may be dependent on the percentage and the type of clay in the soil. Key words: normally consolidated, one-dimensional, isotropic, Cc-line, λ-line.

The anharmonicity of the hydrogen-bonded (N … H) and proton-donor (C—H) stretching modes of the linear (HCN)3 species are calculated at the SCF level with the 4-31G and 6-31G** basis sets. Third and fourth energy derivatives and second and third dipole moment derivatives, which are needed to calculate the anharmonic terms, were evaluated by means of the one-dimensional Chebyshev polynomial fitting to the calculated ab initio points. Frequencies and intensities of overtone bands are reported and the effect of geometry relaxation on the polynomial fitted derivatives as well as mechanical anharmonicity on the vibrational intensities discussed. Key words: H-bonding, anharmonicity, vibrational frequencies, intensities.

Abstract: The preface to the French Civil Code of 1804 announced a New Order based on Right Reason and the political-legal values of the French Revolution, in an attempt to replace the role which churches had traditionally played in the morality of society. Moreover, the new civil law was presented as a substitute for moral law and religion with the aim of taking their place in that burgeoning society. One-dimensional law came into being in order to regulate all aspects of life and was ultimately to do away with the sin/crime dichotomy..Key words: Law, religión, sin, crime

This paper reports on implementation of several numerical techniques to solve a set of governing equations resulting from simple one dimensional isotropic consolidation of soils that behave according to the Cam clay model. Three different methods of solving the equations of consolidation, namely the collocation method, the finite volume method and the finite element method, are presented. Apart from evaluating their efficiency, which becomes particularly crucial when implementing these techniques in the framework of an optimization problem aimed at tuning the model parameters, a set of parameters of a Cam clay model driving the time dependent response of the soils (deformation dependent variation of the coefficient of permeability and preconsolidation pressure) is also discussed.

Chloride and sodium migration in an unsaturated stone collection system underlying a compacted soil liner was examined for three different flow rates ranging between 2.5 and 0.017 m/a. Relatively high and uniform concentrations were observed in the unsaturated stone layer. The groundwater velocity played a significant role in contaminant transport through unsaturated stone even at a flow of 0.017 m/a. Experimental observations were accurately predicted using one-dimensional advective–diffusive–dispersive theory. Transport parameters were reduced by modelling the test data. Key words: soil liner, unsaturated flow, diffusion, landfill, collection system.

Kata kunci: Statistik pembawa; kepekatan pembawa; peranti satu–dimensi; pembawa merosot dan tak merosot The carrier statistics for low–dimensional nanostructure is elaborated. The density of state (DOS) is proportional to λDd where d is the dimensionality of the nanostructure and λD is the De–Broglie wavelength proportion of Fermi–Dirac (FD) integral that covers the carrier statistics to all degeneracy level. In the non-degenerate regime the results replicate what is expected from the Boltzmann statistics. However, the results vary in degenerate regime. The results for all dimensions are numerically analyzed and compared for all three Cartesian directions. With appropriate DOS, the carrier concentration in all dimensions is obtained based on the FD statistic. Fermi energy with respect to band edge is a function of temperature that is independent of the carrier concentration in the non–degenerate regime. In the strongly degenerate regime, the Fermi energy is a function of carrier concentration appropriate for given dimensionality, but is independent of temperature. Key words: Carrier statistics; carrier concentration; one dimensional devices; degenerate and nondegenerate carrier

Design of deflectors or barriers to slow or stop snow avalanche debris in the runout zone requires estimates of runup height. In this paper, experimental data on runup of dense, dry granular flows in a flume are presented. The data are then compared with two one-dimensional theoretical equations for runup estimation: (1) a formulation based on following the leading edge of the flow up the barrier and (2) the traditional method adapted from equations presented by A. Voellmy for describing the centre of mass of the avalanche. The results show that the leading-edge model more closely matches the experimental results and, in field applications, the leading-edge model is expected to provide higher and, therefore, more conservative runup estimates. Key words : avalanche run-up, granular flows, avalanche defences, runout zone.

[Co(2,2'-thiodiethanol)2Cl2] (1) and [Mn(2,2'-thiodiethanol)Cl2]n (2), have been synthesized and characterized structurally. Compound 1 is a six-coordinate, mononuclear Co(II) complex. The mononuclear units in the crystal lattice of 1 are linked together through intermolecular hydrogen bonds between hydroxy and chloride groups to form a three-dimensional array. Compound 2 consists of six-coordinate Mn(II) units that are linked by covalently bound 2,2'-thiodiethanol and chloride ligands to form an alternating one-dimensional chain, which is further linked together by inter-chain hydrogen bonds to form a two-dimensional sheet. Antiferromagnetic exchange is present in compound 2.Key words: cobalt, manganese, 2,2'-thiodiethanol, structure, magnetism.

The ligands L = pyridine- or quinoline-carboxylic acid easily give complexes trans-[PdCl2L2], which self-assemble through hydrogen bonding between carboxylic acid groups to give one-dimensional polymers, as proved by structure determinations when L = NC5H4COOH-4, NC5H4COOH-3, and 2-Ph-NC9H5COOH-4.Key words: polymer, hydrogen-bonding, palladium, coordination.
