Gamma-ray treatment and telotrisomic analysis were used for cytological mapping in petunia, which resulted in the genetic marking of both arms of the shorter median chromosome of the genome. An4, which is responsible for anthocyanin synthesis in part of the corolla and in the pollen, is located rather distally on the arm called α; both vs5, a mutation for virescent rosettes, and ph3, producing bluish hues of flower anthocyanins, are located on the other arm. The possibility of determining the order and physical distance of the genes with regard to the centromere is discussed. The sketch of a cytological map for chromosome VII revealed, as previously for chromosome VI, a strong inhibition of crossing-over between two genes located on both arms of the chromosome.Key words: petunia, telotrisomy, gene location, deletion.[Traduit par la revue]

ABSTRACT To analyze mitotic recombination in translocation heterozygotes of A. nidulans two sets of well-marked diploids were constructed, homo- or heterozygous for the reciprocal translocations T1(IL;VIIR) or T2(IL;VIIIR) and heterozygous for selective markers on IL. It was found that from all translocation heterozygotes some of the expected mitotic crossover types could be selected. Such crossovers are monosomic for one translocated segment and trisomic for the other and recovery depends on the relative viabilities of these unbalanced types. The obtained segregants show characteristically reduced growth rates and conidiation dependent on sizes and types of mono- and trisomic segments, and all spontaneously produce normal diploid sectors. Such secondary diploid types either arose in one step of compensating crossing over in the other involved arm, or—more conspicuously—in two steps of nondisjunction via a trisomic intermediate.—In both of the analyzed translocations the segments translocated to IL were extremely long, while those translocated from IL were relatively short. The break in I for T1(I;VII) was located distal to the main selective marker in IL, while that of T2(I;VIII) had been mapped proximal but closely linked to it. Therefore, as expected, the selected primary crossover from the two diploids with T2(I;VIII) in coupling or in repulsion to the selective marker, showed the same chromosomal imbalance and poor growth. These could however be distinguished visually because they spontaneously produced different trisomic intermediates in the next step, in accordance with the different arrangement of the aneuploid segments. On the other hand, from diploids heterozygous for T1(I;VII) mitotic crossovers could only be selected when the selective markers were in coupling with the translocation; these crossovers were relatively well-growing and produced frequent secondary segregants of the expected trisomic, 2n+VII, type. For both translocations it was impossible to recover the reciprocal crossover types (which would be trisomic for the distal segments of I and monosomic for most of groups VII or VIII) presumably because these were too inviable to form conidia.—In addition to the selected segregants of expected types a variety of unexpected ones were isolated. The conditions of selection used favour visual detection of aneuploid types, even if these produce only a few conidial heads and are not at a selective advantage. For T2(I;VIII) these "non-selected" unbalanced segregants were mainly "reciprocal" crossovers of the same phenotype and imbalance as the selected ones. For T1(I;VII) two quite different types were obtained, both possibly originating with loss of the small VII-Itranslocation chromosome. One was isolated when the selective marker in repulsion to T1(I;VII) was used and, without being homo- or hemizygous for the selective marker, it produced stable sectors homozygous for this marker. The other was obtained from both coupling and repulsion diploids and showed a near-diploid genotype; it produced practically only haploid stable sectors of the type expected from monosomics, 2n-1 for the short translocation chromosome.

SUMMARYFour new t haplotypes, tTu1 through tTu4, are described, three of them derived from the tw12tf haplotype and one (tTu4) from the tw2 haplotype. The tTu1 and tTu4 haplotypes cause taillessness in T/tTu1 or T/tTu4 heterozygotes, lack the lethality factor, weakly suppress recombination in the T−H−2 interval, and are transmitted to offspring from tTu/ + males at nearly Mendelian ratios. The tTu3 haplotype resembles tTu1 and tTu4 except for the fact that the T/tTu3 heterozygotes have normal-length tails. The tTu2 haplotype probably carries the lethal factor of tTu12tf, suppresses crossing-over in the T-H-2 and tf-H-2 intervals, and displays a slightly subnormal transmission ratio. In the compound heterozygote tTu1/tTu2, the male transmission ratio of the tTu1 chromosome is close to that of the original tTu12tf haplotype. A similar effect is observed in the tTu3/tTu2 heterozygote. This observation is interpreted as evidence for two regions within the t complex controlling the male transmission ratios. One of the regions is close to the tail-modifying region, the other is close to the lethality factor. Our findings parallel closely those made in the segregation distorter system in Drosophila.

This paper compares the reliability of standard commercial Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EPROM) and Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (E2PROM) components exposed to gamma rays. The results obtained for CMOS-based EPROM (NM27C010) and E2PROM (NM93CS46) components provide the evidence that EPROMs have greater radiation hardness than E2PROMs. Moreover, the changes in EPROMs are reversible, and after erasure and reprogramming all EPROM components restore their functionality. On the other hand, changes in E2PROMs are irreversible. The obtained results are analyzed and interpreted on the basis of gamma ray interaction with the CMOS structure.

ABSTRACT Several stocks, selected because they carried previously identified factors governing either crossing over in males or mutability, were examined to determine whether the effects of these factors are restricted to one or the other process. Neither of two dominant enhancers of male crossing over had detectable effects on Minute mutation frequencies among progenies of assayed F1 males. Genetically equivalent F1 males monitored for crossing over showed no unequivocal effect of either of three mutators (two dominant and one extrachromosomal) or of a suppressor of mutability. However, one combination of a dominant crossover enhancer with a dominant mutator showed synergistic increases in both crossover and Minute frequencies, and the possibility exists that a single extrachromosomally transmitted element suppresses both male crossing over and mutability. This suppressor element (or elements) had been previously diagnosed in the pc stock which, in this study, was discovered to have also a dominant enhancer of male crossing over and a dominant mutator occupying separable loci in the third chromosome. The pc enhancer of male crossing over differs from the dominant enhancer in another stock with respect to the regional distribution of crossovers, and the pc mutator is distinguished from another 3-linked mutator by its preferential induction of mutations at the Delta locus.

Abstract Recombination between two different deletion alleles of a gene (neo) for neomycin and kanamycin resistance was studied in an Escherichia coli sbcA- recB-C- strain. The two homologous regions were in an inverted orientation on the same plasmid molecule. Kanamycin-resistant plasmids were selected and analyzed. The rate of recombination to form kanamycin-resistant plasmids was decreased by mutations in the recE, recF and recJ genes, but was not decreased by a mutation in the recA gene. It was found that these plasmids often possessed one wild-type kanamycin-resistant allele (neo+) while the other neo allele was still in its original (deletion) form. Among kanamycin-resistant plasmids with one wild-type and one parental allele it was often found that the region between the inverted repeats had been flipped (turned around) with respect to sites outside the inverted repeats. These results were interpreted as follows. Gene conversion, analogous to gene conversion in eukaryotic meiosis, is responsible for a unidirectional transfer of information from one neo deletion allele to the other. The flipping of the region between the inverted repeats is interpreted as analogous to the crossing over associated with gene conversion in eukaryotic meiosis. In contrast with a rec+ strain, these products cannot be explained by two rounds of reciprocal crossing over involving a dimeric form as an intermediate. In the accompanying paper we present evidence that gene conversion by double-strand gap repair takes place in the same E. coli strain.

Conducting polymer (CP)-based hydrogels exhibit the behaviors of bending or contraction/relaxation due to electrical stimulation. They are similar in some ways to biological organs and have advantages regarding manipulation and miniaturization. Thus, these hydrogels have attracted considerable interest for biomedical applications. In this study, we prepared PPy/PVP hydrogel with different concentrations and content through polymerization and cross-linking induced by gamma-ray irradiation at 25 kGy to optimize the mechanical properties of the resulting PPy/PVP hydrogel. Optimization of the PPy/PVP hydrogel was confirmed by characterization using scanning electron microscopy, gel fraction, swelling ratio, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition, we assessed live-cell viability using live/dead assay and CCK-8 assay, and found good cell viability regardless of the concentration and content of Py/pTS. The conductivity of PPy/PVP hydrogel was at least 13 mS/cm. The mechanical properties of PPy/PVP hydrogel are important factors in their application for biomaterials. It was found that 0.15PPy/PVP20 (51.96 ± 6.12 kPa) exhibited better compressive strength than the other samples for use in CP-based hydrogels. Therefore, it was concluded that gamma rays can be used to optimize PPy/PVP hydrogel and that biomedical applications of CP-based hydrogels will be possible.

The effects of posthypnotic suggestion on the perception of egocentric distance were evaluated by two methods, one direct and the other indirect. The direct method was the verbal report of the perceived distance of the stimulus. The indirect method used a measure based on apparent concomitant motion of the stimulus with a lateral movement of the head. The indirect method, unlike the direct method, has been shown to be insensitive to cognitive biases. Two highly trained hypnotic observers received posthypnotic suggestions to see a point of light at approximately 2, 4, or 6 ft (61, 122, or 183 cm) from themselves. For each suggested distance the light was physically at 2, 4, or 6 ft. As a control, trials were completed using these same physical distances without the posthypnotic suggestions. Nine experimental trials, one for each combination of suggested distance and physical distance, constituted a trial set. One observer completed three sets, and the other completed two sets. It was found that the posthypnotic suggestions affected the direct but not the indirect measures of the perceived distances of the light.

Identification of gravitationally lensed Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the BATSE 4B catalog can be used to constrain the average redshift <z> of the GRBs. In this paper we investigate the effect of evolving lenses on the <z> of GRBs in different cosmological models of the universe. The cosmological parameters Ω and Λ have an effect on the <z> of GRBs. The other factor which can change the <z> is the evolution of galaxies. We consider three evolutionary model of galaxies. In particular, we find that the upper limit on <z> of GRBs is higher in evolving model of galaxies as compared to non-evolving models of galaxies.

Abstract Considering the largely unacknowledged connection between Byron and Mary Shelley on the logistics which pertain to the experience of crossing-over cultures, this paper investigates the notion of authentic Italianisation as exemplified in their related texts, and discusses its problematics in the context of the dominant themes and preoccupations in Romantic culture. Thus, on the one hand, my paper examines how the Romantic anticipation of being immersed in local culture and of “going native” is articulated – or rather, performed – by Byron himself, by considering specific rhetorical strategies and figures of filiation he used to ground his relationship to Italian place. More specifically, I contend that although Byron’s polymorphic identification to Italian place is constructed in the imagination, it is also grounded in time- and space-bound actions and involves a structure of social relations. On the other hand, the paper delineates how Byron’s idiosyncratic immersion into Italianness is theorised by Mary Shelley and counted on as a model of second culture acquisition.
