Investigation of the Flow Field on a Transonic Turbine Nozzle Guide Vane With Rim Seal Cavity Flow Ejection

Ensuring an adequate life of high pressure turbines requires efficient cooling methods such as rim seal flow ejection from the stator-rotor wheel space cavity interface, which prevents hot gas ingress into the rotor disk. The present paper addresses the potential to improve the efficiency in transonic turbines at certain rim seal ejection rates. To understand this process, a numerical study was carried out, combining computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations and experiments on a single stage axial test turbine. The three dimensional steady CFD analysis was performed, modeling the purge cavity flow ejected downstream of the stator blade row at three flow regimes: subsonic M2=0.73, transonic M2=1.12, and supersonic M2=1.33. Experimental static pressure measurements were used to calibrate the computational model. The main flow field-purge flow interaction is found to be governed by the vane shock structures at the stator hub. The interaction between the vane shocks at the hub and the purge flow has been studied and quantitatively characterized as a function of the purge ejection rate. The ejection of 1% of the core flow from the rim seal cavity leads to an increase in the hub static pressure of approximately 7% at the vane trailing edge. This local reduction of the stator exit Mach number decreases the trailing edge losses in the transonic regime. Finally, a numerically predicted loss breakdown is presented, focusing on the relative importance of the trailing edge losses, boundary layer losses, shock losses, and mixing losses, as a function of the purge rate ejected. Contrary to the experience in subsonic turbines, results in a transonic model demonstrate that ejecting purge flow improves the vane efficiency due to the shock structure modification downstream of the stator.

The detailed mechanisms of purge flow interaction with the hot-gas flow path were investigated using both unsteady computationally fluid dynamics (CFD) and measurements for a turbine operating at design corrected conditions. This turbine consisted of a single-stage high-pressure turbine and the downstream, low-pressure turbine nozzle row with an aerodynamic design equivalent to actual engine hardware and typical of a commercial, high-pressure ratio, transonic turbine. The high-pressure vane airfoils and inner and outer end walls incorporated state-of-the-art film cooling, and purge flow was introduced into the cavity located between the high-pressure vane and disk. The flow field above and below the blade angel wing was characterized by both temperature and pressure measurements. Predictions of the time-dependent flow field were obtained using a three-dimensional, Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes CFD code and a computational model incorporating the three blade rows and the purge flow cavity. The predictions were performed to evaluate the accuracy obtained by a design style application of the code, and no adjustment of boundary conditions was made to better match the experimental data. Part I of this paper compared the predictions to the measurements in and around the purge flow cavity and demonstrated good correlation. Part II of this paper concentrates on the analytical results, looking at the primary gas path ingestion mechanism into the cavity as well as the effects of the rotor purge on the upstream vane and downstream rotor aerodynamics and thermodynamics. Ingestion into the cavity is driven by high static pressure regions downstream of the vane, high-velocity flow coming off the pressure side of the vane, and the blade bow waves. The introduction of the purge flow is seen to have an effect on the static pressure of the vane trailing edge in the lower 5% of span. In addition, the purge flow is weak enough that upon exiting the cavity, it is swept into the mainstream flow and provides no additional cooling benefits on the platform of the rotating blade.

A trailing edge cooled low aspect ratio transonic turbine guide vane is investigated in the VKI Compression Tube Cascade Facility at an outlet Mach number M2, is = 1.05 and a coolant flow rate m˙c/m˙g = 3 percent. The outlet flow field is surveyed by combined total-directional pressure probes and temperature probes. Special emphasis is put on the development of low blockage probes. Additional information is provided by oil flow visualizations and numerical flow visualizations with a three-dimensional Navier–Stokes code. The test results describe the strong differences in the axial evolution of the hub and tip endwall and secondary flows and demonstrate the self-similarity of the midspan wake profiles. According to the total pressure and temperature profiles, the wake mixing appears to be very fast in the near-wake but very slow in the far-wake region. The total pressure wake profile appears to be little affected by the coolant flow ejection.

In high-pressure turbines, a small amount of cold flow is ejected at the hub from the cavity that exists between the stator and the rotor disk. This prevents the ingestion of hot gases into the wheel-space cavity, thus avoiding possible damage. This paper analyzes the interaction between the hub-endwall cavity flow and the mainstream in a high-pressure transonic turbine stage. Several cooling flow ratios are investigated under engine representative conditions. Both time-averaged and time-resolved data are presented. The experimental data is successfully compared with the results of a three-dimensional steady Navier-Stokes computation. Despite the small amount of gas ejected, the hub-endwall cavity flow has a significant influence on the mainstream flow. The Navier-Stokes predictions show how the ejected cold flow is entrained by the rotor hub vortex. The time-resolved static pressure field around the rotor is greatly affected when traversing the non-uniform vane exit flow field. When the cavity flow rate is increased, the unsteady forces on the rotor airfoil are reduced. This is linked to the decrease of vane exit Mach number caused by the blockage of the ejected flow.

A new type of cylindrical gas film seal (CGFS) with a flexible support is proposed according to the working characteristics of the fluid dynamic seal in high-rotational-speed fluid machinery, such as aero-engines and centrifuges. Compared with the CGFS without a flexible support, the CGFS with flexible support presents stronger radial floating characteristics since it absorbs vibration and reduces thermal deformation of the rotor system. Combined with the structural characteristics of a film seal, an analytical model of CGFS with a flexible wave foil is established. Based on the fluid-structure coupling analysis method, the three-dimensional flow field of a straight-groove CGFS model is simulated to study the effects of operating and structural parameters on the steady-state characteristics and the effects of gas film thickness, eccentricity, and the number of wave foils on the equivalent stress of the flexible support. Simulation results show that the film stiffness increases significantly when the depth of groove increases. When the gas film thickness increases, the average equivalent stress of the flexible support first decreases and then stabilizes. Furthermore, the number of wave foils affects the average foils thickness. Therefore, when selecting the number of wave foils, the support stiffness and buffer capacity should be considered simultaneously.

This article presents the effect of volute chamfering on the performance of a forward swept centrifugal fan. The numerical analysis is performed to obtain the performance parameters such as static pressure rise coefficient and total pressure coefficient for various flow coefficients. The chamfer ratio for the volute is optimized parametrically by providing a chamfer on either side of the volute. The influence of the chamfer ratio on the three dimensional flow domain was investigated numerically. The simulation is carried out using Re-Normalisation Group (RNG) k-[Formula: see text] turbulence model. The transient simulation of the fan system is done using standard sliding mesh method available in Fluent. It is found from the analysis that, configuration with chamfer ratio of 4.4 is found be the optimum configuration in terms of better performance characteristics. On an average, this optimum configuration provides improvement of about 6.3% in static pressure rise coefficient when compared to the base model. This optimized chamfer configuration also gives a higher total pressure coefficient of about 3% validating the augmentation in static pressure rise coefficient with respect to the base model. Hence, this numerical study establishes the effectiveness of optimally providing volute chamfer on the overall performance improvement of forward bladed centrifugal fan.

Previous publications have summarized that three special morphological structures of owl wing could reduce aerodynamic noise under low Reynolds number flows effectively. However, the coupling noise-reduction mechanism of bionic airfoil with trailing-edge serrations is poorly understood. Furthermore, while the bionic airfoil extracted from natural owl wing shows remarkable noise-reduction characteristics, the shape of the owl-based airfoils reconstructed by different researchers has some differences, which leads to diversity in the potential noise-reduction mechanisms. In this article, three kinds of owl-based airfoils with trailing-edge serrations are investigated to reveal the potential noise-reduction mechanisms, and a clean airfoil based on barn owl is utilized as a reference to make a comparison. The instantaneous flow field and sound field around the three-dimensional serrated airfoils are simulated by using incompressible large eddy simulation coupled with the FW-H equation. The results of unsteady flow field show that the flow field of Owl B exhibits stronger and wider-scale turbulent velocity fluctuation than that of other airfoils, which may be the potential reason for the greater noise generation of Owl B. The scale and magnitude of alternating mean convective velocity distribution dominates the noise-reduction effect of trailing-edge serrations. The noise-reduction characteristic of Owl C outperforms that of Barn owl, which suggests that the trailing-edge serrations can suppress vortex shedding noise of flow field effectively. The trailing-edge serrations mainly suppress the low-frequency noise of the airfoil. The trailing-edge serration can suppress turbulent noise by weakening pressure fluctuation.

In the paper the structure of the compact spinning with pneumatic groove is introduced and the characteristics of three-dimensional flow field of the compact spinning with pneumatic groove are also investigated. Results from this research confirmed that In the compact zone, the air flows to the groove and enters the inner hollow of the slot-roller through the round holes, and the air on both sides of the groove condenses to the center of it and flows to the round holes; It is beneficial to compact the fiber and make the fiber slip to the bottom of the groove with shrink shape; the velocity and negative pressure are both not homogeneous, as the round holes are not continual, and the gradient of static pressure and velocity in compact zones are also perceptible.
