Aminophosphine Reduction Mechanisms and the Synthesis of Indium Phosphide Nanomaterials

<p>Indium phosphide (InP) nanomaterials are attractive for countless technological applications due to their well-placed band gap energies. The quantum confinement of these semiconductors can give rise to size-dependent absorption and emission features throughout the entire visible spectrum. Therefore, InP materials can be employed as low-toxicity fluorophores that can be implemented in high value avenues such as biological probes, lighting applications, and lasing technologies. However, large scale development of these quantum dots (QDs) has been stymied by the lack of affordable and safe phosphorus precursors. Syntheses have largely been restricted to the use of dangerous chemicals such as tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine ((TMS)₃P), which is costly and highly sensitive to oxygen and water. Recently, less-hazardous tris(dialkylamino)phosphines have been introduced to produce InP QDs on par with those utilizing (TMS)₃P. However, a poor understanding of the reaction mechanics has resulted in difficulties tuning and optimizing this method. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) is used to identify the mechanism of this aminophosphine precursor conversion. This understanding is then implemented to design an improved InP QD synthesis, allowing for the production of high-quality materials outside of glovebox conditions. Time is spent understanding the impact of different precursor salts on the reaction mechanisms and discerning their subsequent effects on nanoparticle size and quality. The motivation of this work is to formulate safer and less technical indium phosphide quantum dot syntheses to foster non-specialist and industrial implementation of these materials.</p>

Recent Advances in Wake Dynamics and Active Drag Reduction of Simple Automotive Bodies

This is a compendium of recent progresses in the development of wake dynamics and active drag reduction of three-dimensional simple automotive models, largely focused on the generic Ahmed body. It covers our new understanding of involved instabilities, predominant frequencies, pressure distribution and unsteady flow structures in the high- (12.5° &lt; f &lt; 30°) and low-drag (f &gt; 30°) bodies and the square-back body (f = 0°), where f is the rear slant angle of the body. Various drag reduction methods and their performances are reviewed, including open- and closed-loop controls along with machine-learning control. The involving drag reduction mechanisms, net saving and efficiencies are discussed. Comments are made for the areas that deserve more attention and future investigation.

Evaluation of different antioxidants during in vitro establishment of allspice (Pimenta dioica L. Merrill): a recalcitrant species

Objective: To evaluate the effect of different antioxidant agents during in vitro establishment of allspice (Pimenta dioica L. Merrill). Design/methodology/approach: The effect of different antioxidant agents (Methylene blue, L-cysteine, and silver nanoparticles [AnNPs]) added to Murashige and Skoog culture medium at different concentrations were studied during axenic establishment of P. dioica. A completely randomized experimental design was used. All trials were performed in triplicate. The percentage of survival, oxidation, contamination was determined, the phenols content, antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation. Results: The highest survival occurred with the addition of L-cysteine. The lowest percentages oxidation were observed in explants treated with L-cysteine. Treatments with 100 and 200 mg L-1 AgNPs had the lowest contamination values. L-cysteine and 50 and 100 mg L-1 AgNPs resulted in an increase in the content of soluble phenols. The highest contents of cell wall-linked phenols were obtained in treatments with 200 mg L-1 methylene blue, L-cysteine, and 200 mg L-1 AgNPs. In this study, all treatments had a reaction of scavenging/reduction mechanisms free radicals. The highest content of malondialdehydes was observed in the control treatment and 200 mg L-1 methylene blue. The highest content of malondialdehydes was observed in the control treatment and 200 mg L-1 methylene blue. Limitations on study/implications: The highest percentage of oxidation was observed in the control treatments, 100 and 200 mg L-1 methylene blue, causing cell death. Findings/conclusions: The addition of L-cysteine to the culture medium is alternative to reduce oxidation during in vitro introduction of P. dioica.

Drag reduction mechanisms on a generic square-back vehicle using an optimised yaw-insensitive base cavity

Regulations on global greenhouse gas emission are driving the development of more energy-efficient passenger vehicles. One of the key factors influencing energy consumption is the aerodynamic drag where a large portion of the drag is associated with the base wake. Environmental conditions such as wind can increase the drag associated with the separated base flow. This paper investigates an optimised yaw-insensitive base cavity on a square-back vehicle in steady crosswind. The test object is a simplified model scale bluff body, the Windsor geometry, with wheels. The model is tested experimentally with a straight cavity and a tapered cavity. The taper angles have been optimised numerically to improve the robustness to side wind in relation to drag. Base pressures and tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry of the full wake were measured in the wind tunnel. The results indicate that a cavity decreases the crossflow within the wake, increasing base pressure, therefore lowering drag. The additional optimised cavity tapering further reduces crossflow and results in a smaller wake with less losses. The overall wake unsteadiness is reduced by the cavity by minimising mixing in the shear layers as well as dampening wake motion. However, the coherent wake motions, indicative of a balanced wake, are increased by the investigated cavities. Graphical abstract

Transcriptomic Analysis of HCN-2 Cells Suggests Connection among Oxidative Stress, Senescence, and Neuron Death after SARS-CoV-2 Infection

According to the neurological symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, it is known that the nervous system is influenced by the virus. We used pediatric human cerebral cortical cell line HCN-2 as a neuronal model of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and, through transcriptomic analysis, our aim was to evaluate the effect of SARS-CoV-2 in this type of cells. Transcriptome analyses revealed impairment in TXN gene, resulting in deregulation of its antioxidant functions, as well as a decrease in the DNA-repairing mechanism, as indicated by the decrease in KAT5. Western blot analyses of SOD1 and iNOS confirmed the impairment of reduction mechanisms and an increase in oxidative stress. Upregulation of CDKN2A and a decrease in CDK4 and CDK6 point to the blocking of the cell cycle that, according to the deregulation of repairing mechanism, has apoptosis as the outcome. A high level of proapoptotic gene PMAIP1 is indeed coherent with neuronal death, as also supported by increased levels of caspase 3. The upregulation of cell-cycle-blocking genes and apoptosis suggests a sufferance state of neurons after SARS-CoV-2 infection, followed by their inevitable death, which can explain the neurological symptoms reported. Further analyses are required to deeply explain the mechanisms and find potential treatments to protect neurons from oxidative stress and prevent their death.

Bacterial-Induced Blood Pressure Reduction: Mechanisms for the Treatment of Hypertension via the Gut

Hypertension is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. As more research into the gut microbiome emerges, we are finding increasing evidence to support that these microbes may have significant positive and negative effects on blood pressure and associated disorders. The bacterial-derived metabolites that are produced in the gut are capable of widespread effects to several tissue types and organs in the body. It is clear that the extensive metabolic function that is lost with gut dysbiosis is unlikely to be replenished with a single metabolite or bacterial strain. Instead, combinations of bacteria and concomitant therapies will provide a more well-rounded solution to manage hypertension. The bioactive molecules that are recognized in this review will inform on ideal characteristics of candidate bacteria and provide direction for future research on the gut microbiome in hypertension.
