In this study, an alternative aqueous isopropyl alcohol-free fountain solution for sheet-fed offset printing is prepared comprising 5 w/w% McIlvaine's buffer system for pH control, 0.3 w/w% Polysorbate 80 as a surfactant, 1 w/w% magnesium nitrate hexahydrate as a conductivity agent and 10 w/w% ethylene glycol mono-butyl ether as an additional wetting agent. The percentages of each composition are w/w% of active and then adjusted to 100 w/w% by adding distilled water. The contact angles of the obtained fountain solution on non-image areas of three common offset printing plates: CTP plate of Kodak, CTP plate of Huaguang Graphic Co. Ltd (China), and CTP plate of Mylan Printing Media Co. Ltd (Vietnam), range from 10° to 20°.The surface tension, conductivity, pH and viscosity were found to be 30.5 mN/m, 1.45 mS/cm, 4.8, and 1.05 x 10-2 g/cm.s, respectively. In comparison to the commercial fountain solution (KF – Trade Mark (China) containing isopropyl alcohol (IPA), the obtained fountain solution shows similar wettability on the non-image area of the offset printing plate whilst having similar physico-chemical parameters. The results indicate that ethylene glycol mono-butyl ether could be a potential substitute for IPA in fountain solution in offset printing, and the obtained fountain solution displays suitable properties for the offset printing process.

The solubility and activity of bovine leukemia virus proteinase (BLV PR) has been examined as a function of solvent composition in order to find a buffer system which would enable to prepare samples concentrated sufficiently for crystallization attempts and other studies. Low solubility and frequent precipitation was one of the major difficulties in the course of experiments carried out with BLV PR in several laboratories. We found that buffers composed of polyvalent ions, and containing glycerol, ethylene glycol or dimethyl sulfoxide, enabled to concentrate the enzyme up to 2 mg/ml. Presence of 4-20% of DMSO, isopropyl alcohol or ethylene glycol results in activation of BLV PR, while glycerol does not significantly affect the BLV PR activity. Zinc or magnesium ions substituting for sodium ions in commonly used buffers caused decrease both in solubility and activity of BLV PR.

AbstractA simultaneous DSC–thermomicroscopy system (DSC450 Linkam Scientific) was applied to the study of phase transitions in rubidium nitrate and silver iodide, the oxidation of polyethylene, the thermal degradation of polylactic acid and magnesium nitrate hexahydrate, and the reversible transitions in thermochromic inks. The results demonstrated the benefits of obtaining simultaneous optical data, both images and light intensity measurements, with DSC, particularly in the interpretation of complex processes and the detection of events with small changes in enthalpy.

Magnesium borate hydroxide (MgBO2(OH) ) were synthesized using magnesium nitrate hexahydrate(MgNO3.6H2O) and borax decahydrate(Na2B4O7.10H2O) by hydrothermal route. Effect of reaction temperature , reaction time and water's volume on the composition , structure , and crystal morphology of the products were investigated, and the products were characterized by XRD and SEM. The results indicated that all of the products were szaibelyite with the reaction condition investigated, and crystal morphology could be tailored via varying the reaction condition.

The relative volatilities of various technical and formulated ester and amine salts of 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] were determined in a closed air-flow system consisting of a volatilization chamber and an ethylene glycol trap. The system was operated at a flow rate of 28.8 L/hr and a temperature of 30 C. Trapped herbicide vapor was analyzed by gas chromatography. The relative volatilities of technical gradeiso-propyl, butyl, propylene glycol butyl ether, andiso-octyl esters, were 56, 25 to 38, 4, and 1, respectively. The relative volatilities of various formulated esters and amines were of the magnitude of 440:33:1 for the high volatile, low volatile, and amine salts, respectively.
