Polycarbonate (PC), a thermoplastic polymer with excellent properties, is used in many advanced technological applications. When PC is blended with other polymers or additives, new properties, such as electrical properties, can be available. In this study, carbon black (CB) was melt-compounded with PC to produce polymer compounds with compositions (10–16 wt.% of CB), which are close to or above the electrical percolation threshold (13.5–14 wt.% of CB). Effects due to nanofiller dispersion/aggregation in the polymer matrix, together with phase composition, glass transition temperature, morphology and textural properties, were studied by using thermal analysis methods (thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry) and scanning electron microscopy. The DC electrical properties of these materials were also investigated by means of electrical conductivity measurements and correlated with the “structure” of the CB, to better explain the behaviour of the composites close to the percolation threshold.

Electrospinning is an efficient technique for the fabrication of polymer nanofibers. The charges inside the polymer jet tend to repel each other so as to stretch and reduce the diameter of the polymer fibers. By rotating the collector at a fast angular speed, nanofibers with specific orientation can be obtained. In this study, nanofibers of Polyethylene oxide (PEO) with carbon black were prepared by electrospinning. PEO was dissolved in a mixture of water and ethanol. PEO is known as an electrolytic polymer. With the blending of carbon black powders, its electrical properties along the fiber direction were investigated. The fiber morphology and characteristics were studied by SEM and polarized FTIR.

Abstract It is shown that various modulus values of carbon black reinforced rubber are functions of the product of the actual black loading and a structure dependent factor. The structure factor appears to be a linear function of the so-called 24M4 value of the dibutylphthalate absorption and is independent of elongation, temperature, and degree of cross-linking over the ranges covered by the data reported. An interpretation of the results is offered based on the idea of polymer occluded in the interstices of primary structure aggregates and thereby shielded from deformation. Structure-concentration equivalence can only be demonstrated with carbon blacks differing in (primary) structure alone. Deviations are observed whenever the carbon blacks compared vary significantly in specific surface area and surface chemical activity.
