Technical lignin from pulping, an aromatic polymer with ~59% carbon content, was employed to develop novel lignin-based nano carbon thin film (LCF)-copper foil composite films for thermal management applications. A highly graphitized, nanoscale LCF (~80–100 nm in thickness) was successfully deposited on both sides of copper foil by spin coating followed by annealing treatment at 1000 °C in an argon atmosphere. The conditions of annealing significantly impacted the morphology and graphitization of LCF and the thermal conductivity of LCF-copper foil composite films. The LCF-modified copper foil exhibited an enhanced thermal conductivity of 478 W m−1 K−1 at 333 K, which was 43% higher than the copper foil counterpart. The enhanced thermal conductivity of the composite films compared with that of the copper foil was characterized by thermal infrared imaging. The thermal properties of the copper foil enhanced by LCF reveals its potential applications in the thermal management of advanced electronic products and highlights the potential high-value utility of lignin, the waste of pulping.

The phonon Boltzmann transport equation model is used to evaluate the reduction of out-of-plane thermal conductivity and subsequent increase in thermoelectric figure of merit when an angular interface is patterned between a germanium thin-film and silicon substrate. According to the acoustic mismatch model, the angular structure reduces the out-of-plane thermal conductivity by spatially redistributing phonons traveling in the out-of-plane direction. Simulation results demonstrate a 43% reduction in out-of-plane thermal conductivity when operating in the fully ballistic regime. This decrease in phononic thermal conductivity would result in an increase of intrinsic thermoelectric efficiency by a factor of 1.75.

The fuel rod performance of enhanced thermal conductivity UO2/graphene composites is investigated through a LBLOCA analysis. The benefits increased monotonically with increasing thermal conductivity in terms of reduced fuel center temperature and PCT. The performance of the UO2/graphene composite fuel is assessed in OPR-1000 (Optimized Power Reactor-1000) during a LBLOCA. Graphene can be a promising material for developing advanced nuclear fuel because of its property about the high thermal conductivity and low absorption cross section. The results confirm a LBLOCA performance related to PCT of the UO2/graphene composite fuel and its potential while maintaining large safety margins.

Polyimide- (PI-) based nanocomposites containing the 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether- (ODA-) modified multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) filler were successfully prepared. The PI/MWCNTs-ODA composite films exhibit high thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical property. The optimal value of thermal conductivity of the PI/MWCNTs-ODA composite film is 0.4397 W/mK with 3 wt.% filler loading, increased by 221.89% in comparison with that of the pure PI film. In addition, the tensile strength of the PI/MWCNTs-ODA composite film is 141.48 MPa with 3 wt.% filler loading, increased by 20.74% in comparison with that of the pure PI film. This work develops a new strategy to achieve a good balance between the high thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical properties of polyimide composite films by using functionalized carbon nanotubes as an effective thermal conductive filler.
