Molecular aggregation phenomena of a highly water-soluble, metal-free phthalocyanine, H[Formula: see text]Pc, and its copper complex, Cu(Pc); where Pc denotes tetrakis{(2[Formula: see text],6[Formula: see text]-dimethyl-4[Formula: see text]-sulfonic acid)phenoxy}phthalocyaninate) in water, ethanol, and their mixed solvent systems have been investigated by spectroscopic approach In both aqueous and ethanolic solutions, H[Formula: see text]Pc molecules aggregate in a slipped-cofacial manner, although very weakly in ethanol. On the other hand, Cu(Pc) molecules aggregate in a cofacial manner in water while aligning in a slipped-cofacial manner in ethanol. Magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy was undertaken to investigate aggregation behaviors of Cu(Pc) in water and ethanol. Presence of 4-phenylpyridine in ethanol effectively inhibited aggregation of Cu(Pc) molecules, although little affected the spectra of the monomers. In a mixed solvent system, where water/ethanol [Formula: see text] 10/90 (v/v), Cu(Pc) is free from aggregation up to almost 10[Formula: see text] M. Driving forces of this molecular aggregation are discussed on the basis of [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] interaction and coordination chemistry involving copper ions.

A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene 1o, which is named 1-[2-methyl-5-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-thienyl]-2-[2-methyl-5-(4-formyphenyl)-3-thienyl] perfluorocyclopentene, was synthesized. Its optical properties, including photochromic reactivity, kinetics and fluorescence properties were investigated in detail. The result indicated that the diarylethene underwent reversible photochromism, changing between colorless and blue in hexane solution and in PMMA, respectively. What is more, the kinetic experiments illustrated that the cyclization/cycloreversion process of this compound was determined to be the zeroth/first reaction. In addition, the results demonstrated that the diarylethene 1o had remarkable fluorescence switching properties.

AbstractSimple glucose solutions were heat treated in an attempt to produce carbon nanodots (CNDTs) with a monodisperse size distribution using a bottom-up approach. Absorption and fluorescence properties of the heat-treated solutions display remarkable similarity to CNDTs reported in the literature. However, particle-sizing and AFM measurements indicate the increasing fluorescence is accompanied by the growth of particles that are larger than most CNDTs discussed in the literature (a concentrated population of monodisperse 30 nm particles and a low concentration of much larger, roughly 500 nm, particles). A dialysis study, shows these larger particles are not responsible for the bulk of the optical properties but, rather the optical properties likely stem from molecular by-products that accompany the heating and caramelization of the sugar.
