Abstract The effect of an external electric field on the total fluorescence of solute molecules is studied up to fourth order theoretically, and is checked experimentally with 4´-N,N-dimethylamino- 4-nitrostilbene in dioxane at room temperature.

<i>Single-Molecule Magnets have potential applications in several nano-technology applications including in high-dense information storage devices and realization of this potential application lies in enhancing the barrier height for magnetization reversal (U<sub>eff</sub>). Recent literature examples suggest that the maximum values that one can obtain using a ligand field are already accomplished. Here we have explored using a combination of DFT and ab initio CASSCF calculations, the way to enhance the barrier height using an oriented external electric field for top three Single-ion Magnets ([Dy(Py)<sub>5</sub>(O<sup>t</sup>Bu)<sub>2</sub>]<sup>+</sup> (<b>1</b>) and [Er{N(SiMe<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>}<sub>3</sub>Cl]<sup>-</sup> (<b>2</b>) and [Dy(Cp<sup>Me3</sup>)Cl] (<b>3</b>)). For the first time our study reveals that, for apt molecules, if appropriate direction and value of electric fields are chosen, the barrier height could be enhanced twice that of the limit set by the ligand field. This novel non-chemical-fine tuning approach to modulate the magnetic anisotropy is expected to yield new generation SIMs.</i>

Abstract The orientation of molecules is crucial in many chemical processes. Here, we report how single dipolar molecules can be oriented with maximum precision using the electric field of a scanning tunneling microscope. Rotation is found to occur around a fixed pivot point that is caused by the specific interaction of an oxygen atom in the molecule with the Ag(111) surface. Both directions of rotation are realized at will with 100% directionality. Consequently, the internal dipole moment of an individual molecule can be spatially mapped via its behavior in an applied electric field. The importance of the oxygen-surface interaction is demonstrated by the addition of a silver atom between a single molecule and the surface and the consequent loss of the pivot point.

AbstractIn this study, an external electric field was used to facilitate the growth of vertically aligned ZnO crystal rods on the surface of indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrates in an aqueous solution. We used Zn(NO3) and C6H12N4 as precursor and reagent. We found that the external electric field generated by DC potential of 5 kV between two electrodes that were placed outside the bottle could facilitate the growth of homogeneous, high density and vertically aligned ZnO crystal rods. Position of the substrate during the growth of crystal was found to be important to obtain well aligned crystal. The crystals that were grown near the negative electrode had the best properties. Photoluminescence measurement at room temperature revealed sharp peaks at around 360 and 380 nm and a broad peak around 420 nm that indicated good properties of ZnO crystals grown with external electric field.

According to [Formula: see text] measurements, it has been predicted that proton transfer would not occur in the radical cation of adenine–thymine (A:T). However, recent theoretical calculations indicate that proton transfer takes place in the base pair in water below the room temperature. We have performed simulations of proton transfer in the cation of B-DNA stack composed of 10 A:T base pairs in water from 20 K to 300 K. Proton transfer occurs below the room temperature, meanwhile it could also be observed at the room temperature under the external electric field. Another case that interests us is that proton transfer bounces back after [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]300 fs from the appearance of proton transfer at low temperatures.

We investigate the structural and electronic properties of germanene/germanane heterostructures. The band gap in these heterostructures can be effectively modulated by the external electric field and strain. These results provide a route to design high-performance FETs operating at room temperature in nanodevices.

Detection of breakdown voltage and diagnostics of the pre-breakdown state of a material is a topical task of studying the characteristics of dielectric materials and structures on their base under applied external electric field. A new efficient method for diagnosing the pre-breakdown state of multilayer structures (MLC) based on the 0.55PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3-0.45PbSc1/2Nb1/2O3 (PMN-PSN) ferroelectric relaxor is considered. The method is based on the analysis of the dynamics of the MLC surface temperature changes upon application of an external electric field. A set of MLC samples was tested under the action of an electric field E = 10 - 120 kV/cm at temperatures from room temperature to 80 ℃. The critical electric field value characterizing the pre-breakdown state and, consequently, limiting the upper level of operating voltages for electrocaloric applications, was determined for PMN-PSN multilayer structures.

ABSTRACTMeasurements of the induced acoustoelectric (IAEC) current in graphene subjected to a surface acoustic wave (SAW) discovered a quantisized character of acoustoelectric current at low bias voltage (Vbias) . The quantisized nature of IAEC has been obtained in all measurements as a result of interaction of SAW and an applied an external electric field. The acoustoelectric currents were studied near the point of electrical neutrality at room temperature. Raman spectra of graphene under the in-situ SAW influence and at an external electric field bias are presented.
