The synthesis and optical characterization of novel single-benzene ESIPT-based fluorophores is described in solid state and in solution. Special attention is given towards the influence of their unique substitution pattern on their optical properties. Depending on this pattern, aggregation induced emission or aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) is observed in the solid state.<br>

Since the growth of single layer of Si has emerged, silicene became a potential candidate material to make up the disadvantage of graphene. In this paper, the complex surface conductivity is applied to characterize the properties of silicene and we investigate the optical characterization of silicene-dielectric interfaces from IR to far UV range. The silicene-Si and silicene-Ge interfaces along both parallel and perpendicular polarization directions of electromagnetic field with normal incidence are considered in this work. The optical properties of the silicene-dielectric systems proposed in this paper lay a foundation for the performance of complex silicene-based optoelectronic devices such as sensors, detectors, filters, UV absorbers and so on.

The optical properties of various porous silver films, grown with a commercial DC sputter coater, were investigated and compared for different plasma parameters. Effective Drude models were successfully used for those films whose spectra did not show particular resonance peaks. For the other films, neither an effective Drude model nor effective medium models (Maxwell Garnett, Bruggeman, and Looyenga) can describe the optical properties. It turns out that a more general approach like the Bergman representation describes the optical data of these films accurately adopting porosity values consistent with physical measurements.

In between thermal-oxidative (heat and oxygen) and photo-oxidative (ultraviolet irradiation and oxygen) aging process of bitumen, photo-oxidative aging mainly depends on the optical properties of the asphalt binder. The higher the reflection (or the lower the absorption of the binders), the better the pavement serviceability. The literature review indicates that there is limited research conducted on the optical properties of the binder with wax additives. In this paper, the optical properties of commonly used binders (PG 64-22, Rubber modified binder, and SBS modified binder) containing wax additives (LEADCAP and Sasobit) were investigated using UV-Vis spectrometer. The result of this study showed that (1) the addition of modifiers (crumb rubber and SBS) with the base binder slightly increases the absorption of the binder; (2) the binder types and aging level have significant contribution on optical properties; (3) in general, the aged binders were observed to have higher reflectivity compared to the unaged binders; and (4) the addition of wax additives is observed to have a significant effect on the optical properties.

ABSTRACTSeveral series of sodali te analogues of unit cell composition M8X2(TO2)12, where M is Zn or Cd, X is a chalcogen, and T is a tetrahedral cation B, or Be in combination with Si or Ge, have been prepared. An M4X tetrahedron, which is the first coordination sphere of the bulk semiconductor MX, sits at the center of each sodalite cage. These materials have been structurally characterized by solid state 77Se and 125STe MAS NMR and by powder X-ray diffraction. Diffuse reflectance optical absorption spectra are reported for each series. The borates have optical properties similar to the bulk MX whereas the beryllosilicates and germanates exhibit large blue shifts in the absorption spectra.

A set of AlN thin films was prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering at room temperature. The effect of oxygen impurities on the structural and optical properties of AlN films is discussed. The structural and optical properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and spectroscopic ellipsometry, respectively. Depending on the deposition conditions, films can grow hexagonal (würzite, P 63 m 3) or cubic (zinc-blende, Fm3m) in microstructure. From the optical measurements, the ellipsometric parameters (ψ, Δ) and the real refractive index as a function of energy were obtained. From the ellipsometric measurements, a model of Lorentz single-oscillator was employed to estimate the optical band gap, Eg. In the theoretical part, a calculation of density of states (DOS) and band structure was performed to be compared with the experimental results.

ABSTRACTThe optical properties of polysilicon on insulating SiO2 were measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry over the energy range 3.0 to 6.0 eV. Spectra were obtained for films as-deposited and after irradiation with an Ar ion laser (focused to a 50μm spot diameter) at 6.0, 7.0 or 7.5 watts. We observed monotonic changes in both ε1 and ε2 with increasing incident power even though the power density was high enough to completely melt the silicon surface in all cases. The changes observed are caused by changes in microstructure; with increasing power the amorphous component decreases and the density increases. Approximate values of the microstructural components are estimated by comparing measured spectra to those synthesized from constituent spectra in the Bruggeman effective medium approximation.
