The interaction of copper with tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TRIS) has been studied by optical and esr spectroscopic techniques. In solution, three different copper complexes are obtained as a function of pH. At pH 10 the room temperature esr parameters are g0 = 2.135, A0 = 82 G and nitrogen superhyperfine structure AN = 9.5 G, characteristic of two nitrogen ligands; at pH 6.5, g0 = 2.147, A0 = 65 G and at pH 5.0, g0 = 2.180, A0 = 44 G. The high pH complex was crystallized and its molecular structure determined by X-ray methods. Space group and cell dimensions are C2/c, a = 12.955(2) Å, b = 10.793(1) Å, c = 10.091(2) Å, β = 116.62(1)°, V = 1261.4(6) Å3, Z = 4, Dc = 1.694 g cm−3, R = 0.034 for938 reflections with I > 3σ(I). The Cu2+ ion is located on the two-fold axis and coordinated to the oxygen and nitrogen atoms of two TRIS moieties; these ligand atoms form the rectangular base of a pyramid structure in which oxygen from a water molecule acts as the fifth ligand.

Ambidentate ligand pyridyldiketones were used in combination with copper to catalyze maintain of aryl halides under very mild temperatures. This novel catalytic system allow efficient coupling in one of the smoothest conditions ever reported in literature.

<div>While carbon-heteroatom cross coupling reactions have been extensively studied, many methods are specific and</div><div>limited to a set of substrates or functional groups. Reported here is a method that allows for C-O, C-N and C-S cross coupling reactions under one general methodology. We propose that an energy transfer pathway, in which an iridium photosensitizer produces an excited nickel (II) complex, is responsible for the key reductive elimination step that couples aryl halides to 1° and 2° alcohols, anilines, thiophenols, carbamates and sulfonamides.</div>

A series of novel 1, 3, 4-oxadiazole analogues was synthesized from cyclization of hydrazones of substituted 1-ethyl-1,4-dihydro-7-methyl-4-oxo-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carbohydrazides were prepared from nalidixic acid. The structures of synthesized oxadiazole derivatives and their copper complexes were elucidated on the basis of FTIR, elemental analyses, 1H-NMR and atomic absorption spectral analysis. It was observed from spectral data that metal ligand ratio was 1:1 in all copper complexes and they were bidentate, coordination was found to be done through oxygen of 4-oxo group and nitrogen of oxadiazole ring. The synthesized compounds were further evaluated with biological activities and compared with parent hydrazones. Copper complexes possess antibacterial and antifungal activities better than the oxadiazoles while they have better antioxidant activity then copper complexes. Parent hydrazones were better in all biological activities than synthesized oxadiazoles.

The three copper complexes having a-ketoglutaric acid (H2A) and 1- (o-tolyl) biguanide (TB) ligands have been synthesized and characterized. The proposed formulas for these complexes are: [Cu(TB)(HA)]Cl (C1), [Cu(TB)(HA)CH3COO]�H2O (C2) and [Cu(TB)(HA)](NO3) (C3) where HA represents deprotonated H2A. The complexes obtained were tested for antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, antifungal activity on Candida albicans ATCC 10231 and antitumor activity on HeLa tumor cells. Due to the antitumor, antifungal, antimicrobial activity and inhibition of inert substrate adhesion, complexes synthesized could be used for potential therapeutic applications.
