This paper presents an analytic solution for aerodynamic noise generated by an unsteady wall pressure gust interacting with a spanwise-variable trailing edge in a background steady uniform flow. Viscous and nonlinear effects are neglected. The Wiener–Hopf method is used in conjunction with a non-orthogonal coordinate transformation and separation of variables to permit analytical progress. The solution is obtained in terms of a tailored modal expansion in the spanwise coordinate; however, only finitely many modes are cut-on, therefore the far-field noise can be quickly evaluated. The solution gives insight into the potential mechanisms behind the reduction of noise for plates with serrated trailing edges compared to those with straight edges. The two mechanisms behind the noise reduction are an increased destructive interference in the far field, and a redistribution of acoustic energy from low cut-on modes to higher cut-off modes. Five different test-case trailing-edge geometries are considered. The analytic solution identifies which geometries are most effective in different frequency ranges: geometries which promote destructive interference are best at low frequencies, whilst geometries which promote a redistribution of energy are better at high frequencies.

This paper presents an analytic solution for the sound generated by an unsteady gust interacting with a semi-infinite flat plate with a serrated leading edge in a background steady uniform flow. Viscous and nonlinear effects are neglected. The Wiener–Hopf method is used in conjunction with a non-orthogonal coordinate transformation and separation of variables to permit analytical progress. The solution is obtained in terms of a modal expansion in the spanwise coordinate; however, for low- and mid-range incident frequencies only the zeroth-order mode is seen to contribute to the far-field acoustics, therefore the far-field noise can be quickly evaluated. The solution gives insight into the potential mechanisms behind the reduction of noise for plates with serrated leading edges compared to those with straight edges, and predicts a logarithmic dependence between the tip-to-root serration height and the decrease of far-field noise. The two mechanisms behind the noise reduction are proposed to be an increased destructive interference in the far field, and a redistribution of acoustic energy from low cut-on modes to higher cut-off modes as the tip-to-root serration height is increased. The analytic results show good agreement in comparison with experimental measurements. The results are also compared against nonlinear numerical predictions where good agreement is also seen between the two results as frequency and tip-to-root ratio are varied.

This paper presents an analytic solution for gust–aerofoil interaction noise for flat plates with spanwise-varying periodic leading edges in uniform mean flow. The solution is obtained by solving the linear inviscid equations via separation of variables and the Wiener–Hopf technique, and is suitable for calculating the far-field noise generated by any leading edge with a single-valued piecewise linear periodic spanwise geometry. Acoustic results for homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow are calculated by integrating the single-gust solution over a wavenumber spectrum. The far-sound pressure level is calculated for five test-case geometries; sawtooth serration, slitted $v$-root, slitted $u$-root, chopped peak and square wave, and compared to experimental measurements. Good agreement is seen over a range of frequencies and tip-to-root ratios (varying the sharpness of the serration). The analytic solution is then used to calculate the propagating pressure along the leading edge of the serration for fixed spanwise wavenumbers, i.e. only the contribution to the surface pressure which propagates to the far field. Using these results, two primary mechanisms for noise reduction are discussed; tip and root interference, and a redistribution of energy from cuton modes to cutoff modes. A secondary noise-reduction mechanism due to nonlinear features is also discussed and seen to be particularly important for leading edges with very narrow slits.

An analytical model is developed for the prediction of noise radiated by an aerofoil with leading-edge serration in a subsonic turbulent stream. The model makes use of Fourier expansion and Schwarzschild techniques in order to solve a set of coupled differential equations iteratively and express the far-field sound power spectral density in terms of the statistics of incoming turbulent upwash velocity. The model has shown that the primary noise-reduction mechanism is due to the destructive interference of the scattered pressure induced by the leading-edge serrations. It has also shown that in order to achieve significant sound reduction, the serration must satisfy two geometrical criteria related to the serration sharpness and hydrodynamic properties of the turbulence. A parametric study has been carried out and it is shown that serrations can reduce the overall sound pressure level at most radiation angles, particularly at small aft angles. The sound directivity results have also shown that the use of leading-edge serration does not significantly change the dipolar pattern of the far-field noise at low frequencies, but it changes the cardioid directivity pattern associated with radiation from straight-edge scattering at high frequencies to a tilted dipolar pattern.

The use of streamwise finlets as a passive flow and aerodynamic noise-control technique is considered in this paper. A comprehensive experimental investigation is undertaken using a long flat plate, and results are presented for the boundary layer and surface pressure measurements for a variety of surface treatments. The pressure–velocity coherence results are also presented to gain a better understanding of the effects of the finlets on the boundary layer structures. The results show that the flow behaviour downstream of the finlets is strongly dependent on the finlet spacing. The use of finlets with coarse spacing leads to a reduction in pressure spectrum at mid- to high frequencies and an increase in spanwise length scale in the trailing-edge region due to flow channelling effects. For the finely distributed finlets, the flow is observed to behave similarly to that of a permeable backward-facing step, with significant suppression of the high-frequency pressure fluctuations but an elevation at low frequencies. Furthermore, the convection velocity is observed to reduce downstream of all finlet treatments. The trailing-edge surface pressure spectrum results have shown that, in order to obtain maximum unsteady pressure reduction, the finlet spacing should be of the order of the thickness of the inner layer of the boundary layer. A thorough study is provided for understanding of the underlying physics of both categories of finlets and their implications for controlling the flow and noise generation mechanism near the trailing edge.

A new analytical model is developed for the prediction of noise from serrated trailing edges. The model generalizes Amiet’s trailing-edge noise theory to sawtooth trailing edges, resulting in a complicated partial differential equation. The equation is then solved by means of a Fourier expansion technique combined with an iterative procedure. The solution is validated through comparison with the finite element method for a variety of serrations at different Mach numbers. The results obtained using the new model predict noise reduction of up to 10 dB at 90$^{\circ }$ above the trailing edge, which is more realistic than predictions based on Howe’s model and also more consistent with experimental observations. A thorough analytical and numerical analysis of the physical mechanism is carried out and suggests that the noise reduction due to serration originates primarily from interference effects near the trailing edge. A closer inspection of the proposed mathematical model has led to the development of two criteria for the effectiveness of the trailing-edge serrations, consistent but more general than those proposed by Howe. While experimental investigations often focus on noise reduction at 90$^{\circ }$ above the trailing edge, the new analytical model shows that the destructive interference scattering effects due to the serrations cause significant noise reduction at large polar angles, near the leading edge. It has also been observed that serrations can significantly change the directivity characteristics of the aerofoil at high frequencies and even lead to noise increase at high Mach numbers.

The objective of this work is to investigate the effect of the porous trailing edge on the aeroacoustics performance of the NACA 65(12)-10 aerofoil. The motivation behind this study is to investigate the effect of the porous parameters to explore the noise control concepts. Experimental testing in an aeroacoustics open jet wind tunnel was performed at chord-based Reynolds numbers between 0.2 and 0.6 million, and effective angles of attack at ±1.7 degree, including at 0 degrees. The porous trailing edge at porosity 30% with different holes diameters and the length of these porous trailing edges are used in the acoustic experiments. The study reveals that the level of the reduction of the broadband noise becomes larger as the diameter of the holes decreases and the length of the porous trailing edge increases at lower Reynolds numbers. Bluntness-induced tone noise is produced at high Reynolds number. Meanwhile, the porous trailing edge can suppress the laminar instability noise at the middle and low frequency regions.

This paper investigates the noise emissions from NACA 6412 asymmetric airfoil with different perforated extension plates at the trailing edge. The length of the extension plate is 10 mm, and the pore diameters ( D) considered for the study are in the range of 0.689 to 1.665 mm. The experiments are carried out in the flow velocity ( U∞) range of 20 to 45 m/s, and geometric angles of attack ( αg) values of −10° to +10°. Perforated extensions have an overwhelming response in reducing the low frequency noise (<1.5 kHz), and a reduction of up to 6 dB is observed with an increase in the pore diameter. Contrastingly, the higher frequency noise (>4 kHz) is observed to increase with an increase in the pore diameter. The dominant reduction in the low frequency noise for perforated model airfoils is within the Strouhal number (based on the displacement thickness) of 0.11. The overall sound pressure levels of perforated model airfoils are observed to reduce by a maximum of 2 dB compared to the base airfoil. Finally, by varying the geometric angle of attack from −10° to +10°, the lower frequency noise is seen to increase, while the high frequency noise is observed to decrease.

Previous publications have summarized that three special morphological structures of owl wing could reduce aerodynamic noise under low Reynolds number flows effectively. However, the coupling noise-reduction mechanism of bionic airfoil with trailing-edge serrations is poorly understood. Furthermore, while the bionic airfoil extracted from natural owl wing shows remarkable noise-reduction characteristics, the shape of the owl-based airfoils reconstructed by different researchers has some differences, which leads to diversity in the potential noise-reduction mechanisms. In this article, three kinds of owl-based airfoils with trailing-edge serrations are investigated to reveal the potential noise-reduction mechanisms, and a clean airfoil based on barn owl is utilized as a reference to make a comparison. The instantaneous flow field and sound field around the three-dimensional serrated airfoils are simulated by using incompressible large eddy simulation coupled with the FW-H equation. The results of unsteady flow field show that the flow field of Owl B exhibits stronger and wider-scale turbulent velocity fluctuation than that of other airfoils, which may be the potential reason for the greater noise generation of Owl B. The scale and magnitude of alternating mean convective velocity distribution dominates the noise-reduction effect of trailing-edge serrations. The noise-reduction characteristic of Owl C outperforms that of Barn owl, which suggests that the trailing-edge serrations can suppress vortex shedding noise of flow field effectively. The trailing-edge serrations mainly suppress the low-frequency noise of the airfoil. The trailing-edge serration can suppress turbulent noise by weakening pressure fluctuation.

This paper studies the vibrational behavior and far-field sound radiation of a submerged stiffened conical shell at low frequencies. The solution for the dynamic response of the conical shell is presented in the form of a power series. A smeared approach is used to model the ring stiffeners. Fluid loading is taken into account by dividing the conical shell into narrow strips which are considered to be local cylindrical shells. The far-field sound pressure is solved by the Element Radiation Superposition Method. Excitations in two directions are considered to simulate the loading on the surface of the conical shell. These excitations are applied along the generator and normal to the surface of the conical shell. The contributions from the individual circumferential modes on the structural responses of the conical shell are studied. The effects of the external fluid loading and stiffeners are discussed. The results from the analytical models are validated by numerical results from a fully coupled finite element/boundary element model.
