Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) é considerada uma das mais sérias pragas do eucalipto no Brasil. Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de estudar a preferência alimentar de T. arnobia em seis espécies de eucalipto e a influência da idade foliar sobre a seleção hospedeira, utilizando-se folhas jovens e velhas de Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Eucalyptus saligna, Eucalyptus citriodora, Eucalyptus robusta e Eucalyptus cloeziana. Lagartas de T. arnobia alimentadas na geração anterior com folhas de E. grandis preferiram folhas jovens de E. grandis e E.cloeziana, enquanto as alimentadas com E. saligna, na geração anterior, preferiram folhas velhas de E. grandis. A espécie preferida por lagartas de T. arnobia foi E. grandis, observando-se, também maior preferência por folhas jovens que por folhas velhas nas espécies utilizadas nos testes.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi a geração de um mapa de aptidão florestal considerando níveis de manejo para Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn, Eucalyptus citriodora Hook, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden e Eucalyptus urophylla St. Blake na bacia do rio Dourados, com auxílio do software SPRING 4.1/INPE. A área de estudo localiza-se no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, entre as coordenadas 21º 56’ S - 22º 38’ S e 53º 57’ O - 55º 57’ O, com precipitação média anual na região em torno de 1.400 mm e clima do tipo Cwa. Os solos são predominantemente da classe Latossolos, ocorrendo também Argissolos, Neossolos Quartzarênicos e Gleissolos em menores proporções. As exigências edafoclimáticas das espécies citadas foram baseadas na sua ocorrência nas regiões de origem. A partir do cruzamento dos mapas de solos, altimetria, hidrografia, declividade, áreas de preservação permanente e de uso da terra, e considerando-se as restrições para cada espécie, geraram-se três mapas: um para E. urophylla, outro para E. camaldulensis, E. citriodora e E. grandis e um terceiro considerando os níveis de manejo tecnológico. Como resultado, constatou-se que mais de 87% (excetuando-se a reserva legal) da área da bacia do rio Dourados é apta para o cultivo das espécies consideradas, podendo-se contar com sete classes de manejo tecnológico.

Most of the industrial process requires a temperature level below 250?C which is easily achievable using solar energy. Pakistan is fortunate enough to have long sunlight hours and high intensity of solar insolation. The mean total irradiation falling on a horizontal plane is about 200-250 Watt per m2 per day. This precious source of natural energy has tremendous potential in the agro-based industry like the distillation of medicinal plants. The main objective of this study was to conduct a Quantitative and Qualitative analyses of solar distilled oil of the medicinal plant. Solar distillation systems had been installed at Agricultural Engineering Workshop, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology and Rosa Lab, Institute of Horticultural Sciences, University of Agriculture Faisalabad. This distillation system was designed according to the latitude of Faisalabad. This system comprised of primary reflector, secondary reflector, condenser, and Florentine flask. In this study Eucalyptus Camaldulensis and Eucalyptus Citriodora, essential oils were distilled by solar distillation system and by a conventional distillation system for comparing the results. GC-MS analysis of Eucalyptus Camaldulensis and Eucalyptus Citriodora essential oils were carried out at National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Faisalabad. The results of quantitative and qualitative analyses of essential oils showed that the quantity and the quality of essential oils of same species of Eucalyptus, distilled by Solar distillation system and conventional controlled distillation system were same. So, it was concluded that the quality and quantity of essential oils of same species don?t differ significantly either distilled by solar distillation system or by conventional controlled distillation system.

Realizou-se um levantamento populacional de espécies da família Scolytidae em plantios de Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. Dehnh. Dehnh., Eucalyptus citriodora Hook. f., Eucalyptus pellita F. Muell. e Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake, com auxílio de armadilhas etanólicas, modelo escolitídeo-Curitiba, no município de Cuiabá, estado de Mato Grosso, de março de 1998 a fevereiro de 1999. Foram utilizadas 24 armadilhas, sendo seis por talhão/espécie de Eucalyptus. As coletas foram quinzenais e divididas em dois períodos: seco (maio-outubro) e chuva (novembro-abril). Foram coletados um total de 19.153 indivíduos, distribuídos em 11 gêneros e 42 espécies. Nos períodos seco e chuvoso foram coletados 9.865 e 9.288 indivíduos respectivamente. Nos talhões de Eucalyptus pellita e de Eucalyptus urophylla, foram coletados as maiores quantidades de indivíduos em ambos os períodos analisados. Cryptocarenus diademantus Eggers, 1937; Cryptocarenus seriatus Eggers, 1933; Cryptocarenus heveae (Hagedorni, 1912); Hypothenemus obscurus (Fabricius, 1801) e Xyleborus spinosulus (Schedl, 1934) foram, quantitativamente, as espécies mais importantes nos plantios das quatro espécies de Eucalyptus.

Essential oils (EOs) fromCymbopogon citratus(CC),Eucalyptus citriodora(EC),Eucalyptus camaldulensis(ED), andCitrus sinensis(CS) were obtained by hydrodistillation process. The EOs were evaluated in vitro for activity againstTrypanosoma brucei brucei(Tbb) andTrypanosoma evansi(T. evansi). The EOs were found to possess antitrypanosomal activity in vitro in a dose-dependent pattern in a short period of time. The drop in number of parasite over time was achieved doses of 0.4 g/ml, 0.2 g/mL, and 0.1 g/mL for all the EOs. The concentration of 0.4 g/mL CC was more potent at 3 minutes and 2 minutes for Tbb andT. evansi, respectively. The GC-MS analysis of the EOs revealed presence of Cyclobutane (96.09%) in CS, 6-octenal (77.11%) in EC, Eucalyptol (75%) in ED, and Citral (38.32%) in CC among several other organic compounds. The results are discussed in relation to trypanosome chemotherapy.

Neste estudo foram analisadas variáveis biofísicas para definir áreas potenciais para o plantio de espécies florestais tradicionais no território do Distrito Federal. Para identificar as áreas aptas para a implantação dos povoamentos florestais, foi realizada a sobreposição de variáveis do meio físico do Distrito Federal com variáveis relacionadas às exigências adaptativas de cada espécie estudada. Com base nos resultados desta pesquisa, as espécies que apresentaram potencial para cultivo nas condições físicas do Distrito Federal foram as três variedades de Pinus caribaea, P. elliottii var. elliottii, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. urophylla, E. grandis e Corymbia citriodora. The larvicidal activity of essential oils (EOs) extracted from Cymbopogon citratus, Cymbopogon winterianus, Eucalyptus citriodora, and Eucalyptus camaldulensis aromatic plants grown in Vietnam was evaluated on Aedes aegypti larvae. The EOs were hydro-distilled in a Clevenger-type apparatus. The EOs were analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The mortality rates obtained from the bioassays were used to calculate the lethal concentrations (LC50) of the EOs by the probit analysis method. These essential oils exhibited toxicity to the larvae of Aedes aegypti. Results were obtained for Cymbopogon citratus (LC50 = 120.6 ppm), Cymbopogon winterianus (LC50 = 38.8 ppm), Eucalyptus citriodora (LC50 = 104.4 ppm), and Eucalyptus camaldulensis (LC50 = 33.7 ppm). The essential oils of Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Cymbopogon winterianus were found to be the most efficient, and their respective values of LC50 were 33.7 ppm, 38.8 ppm. In conclusion, this research adds to the growing body of literature on natural larvicides from essential oils against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Os Sistemas Agroflorestais (SAFs) constituem-se em uma alternativa de uso da terra para aliar a estabilidade do ecossistema visando à eficiência e otimização de recursos naturais na produção de forma integrada e sustentada. O objetivo deste estudo de caso foi avaliar a viabilidade econômica de um sistema agroflorestal localizado na região do Pontal do Paranapanema. O SAF em estudo é formada por espécies agrícolas: milho (Zea maiz), feijão guandu (Cajanus cajan), carioquinha, (Vigna unguiculata), preto (Phaseolus vulgaris) e mandioca (Manihot esculenta) com espécies florestais: Eucalyptus citriodora e Eucalyptus camaldulensis. A rentabilidade econômica do sistema foi mensurada, utilizando Valor Presente Líquido (VPL), Razão Benefício/Custo (RB/C) para as culturas agrícolas anuais e Valor Esperado da terra (VET) para os componentes madeireiros. Para tais cálculos foi escolhida uma taxa de desconto de 6%. O estudo demonstrou que o sistema agroflorestal apresentou rentabilidade econômica positiva, e que podem ser adotados por pequenos produtores. Assim, pode-se concluir que os sistemas agroflorestais são economicamente viáveis para pequenos produtores rurais trabalhando nas mesmas condições apresentadas neste estudo.

Erfolgreicher Schutz gegen Stiche von blutsaugenden Insekten und Zecken bedingt die konsequente Anwendung geeigneter Maßnahmen. Eine eventuell notwendige Chemoprophylaxe wird dadurch nie ersetzt. Die Umstände, unter denen der Schutz erreicht werden soll, bestimmen die Kombination der zu treffenden Maßnahmen. Von Wohnräumen kann man Insekten mit Mückengittern oder -gaze an Fenstern und Türen oder mittels Klimaanlagen fernhalten. Beim Schlafen kann man sich mit einem Moskitonetz schützen. Diese Maßnahmen können bei Bedarf durch Insektizide ergänzt oder unterstützt werden. Meistens kommen synthetische Pyrethroide entweder als «knock down»-Sprays oder elektroverdampft für die Behandlung von Räumen oder als Imprägnierungsmittel von Netzen und Gittern zum Einsatz. Wenn ein Kontakt nicht durch die Wahl von Aufenthaltsort und -zeit vermeidbar ist, werden außer Haus zum Schutz vor Stichen geeignete Kleidung sowie Repellentien eingesetzt. Kleider sollen möglichst viel Körperfläche bedecken, aus festem Gewebe, nicht eng anliegend und von heller Farbe sein. Eine zusätzliche Behandlung mit Insektiziden ist vorteilhaft. Repellentien werden direkt auf die Haut appliziert. Diethylmethylbenzamin (DEET) zeigt seit vielen Jahren eine verlässliche Wirkung. Ebenfalls verbreitete synthetische Wirkstoffe sind Bayrepel® und IR3535. Sie weisen ein noch etwas geringeres Nebenwirkungsrisiko auf, nachteilig ist jedoch die schwächere Wirkung. Von den pflanzlichen Produkten sind die mit einem Extrakt aus Eucalyptus citriodora die am besten wirksamen. Schwächere Produkte schützen Personen, die für Mücken speziell attraktiv sind, nur ungenügend. Völlig nutzlos sind auf Arm-, Halsbänder oder Kleber aufgetragene Repellentien, sowie Ultraschallgeräte, UV-Lichtfallen oder die Einnahme von Vitamin B1 oder Knoblauch.
