The purpose of this paper is to comparatively study the surface characteristics of domestic and Toray T700 carbon fibers (T700-CFs) and the interfacial properties of their reinforced epoxy composites. The surface roughness and surface energy of the fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and dynamic contact angle analysis (DCAA). The surface chemistry analysis of the fibers was carried out by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The interfacial properties of the T700-CF/epoxy composites were studied by testing the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), observing SEM images of composites profiles and calculating the interfacial adhesion factors from dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) data. The results show that domestic T700-CFs have a better interfacial adhesion to epoxy matrix due to its higher surface roughness, chemical activity and surface energy than Toray T700-CFs.

The poor interfacial adhesion of aramid fiber and matrix limits the application of the final composites. In this study, a series of the sulfone-functionalized poly( p-phenylene terephthalamide) (SPPTA) copolymers were satisfactorily synthesized and the effects of polymerization conditions (contents of the additional monomer and the cosolvent LiCl, molar concentration and ratio of the monomer, reaction temperature and time) on the molecular weight of the copolymer were discussed. The introduction of the sulfone group in aromatic polyamides not only increased the polarity of poly( p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) but destroyed the regular arrangement of the molecular chains, which greatly improved the surface free energy and the solubility of the polymers in organic solvents. The polymer maintained excellent thermal and interfacial properties. Compared with the PPTA fiber/epoxy composites, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of SPPTA fiber-reinforced epoxy composites reached 43.5 MPa, with a significantly enhancement of 20.8%, implying that the study provided an effective method to achieve highly interfacial adhesion of aramid fiber-reinforced composites.

AbstractThe interfacial interaction between the fiber and matrix is the most important factor which influences the performance of the carbon fiber-epoxy composites. In this study, the graphitic surface of the carbon fibers was modified with graphene oxide nanomaterials by using a spray coating technique which is an easy, cheap, and quick method. The carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composites were prepared by hand layup technique using neat carbon fibers and 0.5, 1 and 2% by weight graphene oxide (GO) modified carbon fibers. As a result of SEM analysis, it was observed that GO particles were homogeneously coated on the surface of the carbon fibers. Furthermore, Young's modulus increased from 35.14 to 43.40 GPa, tensile strength increased from 436 to 672 MPa, and the elongation at break was maintained around 2% even in only 2% GO addition.

The γ-ray co-irradiation method was employed to study the effect of diethanolamine modification on the surface of carbon fiber (CF) and the interfacial properties of CF/epoxy composites. Compared with the original carbon fiber, the surface of modified fibers became rougher. The amount of oxygen-containing functional groups was increased and the nitrogen element was detected after irradiation grafting. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of composites reinforced by carbon fibers irradiated in diethanolamine solution was increased and then decreased as the irradiation dose increased. The ILSS of CF/epoxy composites was enhanced by 16.1% at 200kGy dose, compared with that of untreated one. The γ-ray irradiation grafting is expected to be a promising method for the industrialized modification of carbon fibers.
