Abstract. Interest is a positive emotion related to attention. The event-related brain potential (ERP) probe technique is a useful method to evaluate the level of interest in dynamic stimuli. However, even in the irrelevant probe technique, the probe is presented as a physical stimulus and steals the observer’s attentional resources, although no overt response is required. Therefore, the probe might become a problematic distractor, preventing deep immersion of participants. Heartbeat-evoked brain potential (HEP) is a brain activity, time-locked to a cardiac event. No probe is required to obtain HEP data. Thus, we aimed to investigate whether the HEP can be used to evaluate the level of interest. Twenty-four participants (12 males and 12 females) watched attractive and unattractive individuals of the opposite sex in interesting and uninteresting videos (7 min each), respectively. We performed two techniques each for both the interesting and the uninteresting videos: the ERP probe and the HEP techniques. In the former, somatosensory stimuli were presented as task-irrelevant probes while participants watched videos: frequent (80%) and infrequent (20%) stimuli were presented at each wrist in random order. In the latter, participants watched videos without the probe. The P2 amplitude in response to the somatosensory probe was smaller and the positive wave amplitudes of HEP were larger while watching the videos of attractive individuals than while watching the videos of unattractive ones. These results indicate that the HEP technique is a useful method to evaluate the level of interest without an external probe stimulus.

Abstract In this study, the resistance of FIB prepared vias was characterized by the Kelvin probe technique and their physical characteristics studied using cross-sectional analysis. Two domains of resistivity were isolated in relation to the ion beam current used for the deposition of the via metal (Pt). Also submicrometer vias were investigated on 4.2 µm deep metal lines of a BiCMOS aluminum based design and a CMOS 090 copper based one. It is shown that the controlling parameter is the shape and volume of the contact, and that the contact formation is favored by the amount of over-mill of the via into the metal line it will contact.

Endosome fractions were isolated from rat liver homogenates on the basis of the subcellular distribution of circulating ligands, e.g. 125I-asialotransferrin internalized by hepatocytes by a receptor-mediated process. The distribution of endocytosed 125I-asialotransferrin 1-2 min and 15 min after uptake by liver and a monensin-activated Mg2+-dependent ATPase activity coincided on linear gradients of sucrose and Nycodenz. The monensin-activated Mg2+-ATPase was enriched relative to the liver homogenates up to 60-fold in specific activity in the endosome fractions. Contamination of the endosome fractions by lysosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, plasma membranes and Golgi-apparatus components was low. By use of 9-aminoacridine, a probe for pH gradients, the endosome vesicles were shown to acidify on addition of ATP. Acidification was reversed by addition of monensin. The results indicate that endosome fractions contain an ATP-driven proton pump. The ionophore-activated Mg2+-ATPase in combination with the presence of undegraded ligands in the endosome fractions emerge as linked markers for this new subcellular organelle.
