An experimental investigation of wake-induced unsteady heat transfer in the stagnation region of a cylinder was conducted. The objective of the study was to create a quasi-steady representation of the stator/rotor interaction in a gas turbine using two stationary cylinders in crossflow. In this simulation, a larger cylinder, representing the leading-edge region of a rotor blade, was immersed in the wake of a smaller cylinder, representing the trailing-edge region of a stator vane. Time-averaged and time-resolved heat transfer results were obtained over a wide range of Reynolds number at two Mach numbers: one incompressible and one transonic. The tests were conducted at Reynolds numbers, Mach numbers, and gas-to-wall temperature ratios characteristic of turbine engine conditions in an isentropic compression-heated transient wind tunnel (LICH tube). The augmentation of the heat transfer in the stagnation region due to wake unsteadiness was documented by comparison with isolated cylinder tests. It was found that the time-averaged heat transfer rate at the stagnation line, expressed in terms of the Frossling number (Nu/Re), reached a maximum independent of the Reynolds number. The power spectra and cross-correlation of the heat transfer signals in the stagnation region revealed the importance of large vortical structures shed from the upstream wake generator. These structures caused large positive and negative excursions about the mean heat transfer rate in the stagnation region.

An analysis is described for convection from a circular cylinder subjected to transverse oscillations relative to the fluid in which it is immersed. The analysis is based upon use of the acoustic streaming flow field. It is assumed that the frequency involved is sufficiently small that the acoustic wavelength in the fluid is much larger than the cylinder diameter, and that there is no externally imposed mean flow across or along the cylinder. Solutions are presented which are appropriate for a wide range of Prandtl number, and the cases of small and of large streaming Reynolds number are distinguished. The analysis compares favourably with experiments when the influence of natural convection is small.

This paper aims to investigate the effect of the flow pattern on the mixed convection heat transfer. A 28 thermocouples wire were installed along a 900mm copper tube to measure the temperature distribution. Three insulation layers of fiber glass, asbestos and gypsum were used to minimize to heat lost to the surrounding. A forced convection at the entrance region of a fully developed opposing laminar air flow was investigated to evaluate the flow direction effect on the Nusselt number. The investigation covered a wide range of Reynolds number from 410 to 1600 and heat flux varied from 63W/m2 to 1260W/m2, with different angles of tube inclination of 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°. It was found that the surface temperature variation along the tube for opposed flow higher than the assisted flow but lower than the horizontal orientation. The Reynolds number has a significant effect on Nusselt number in opposed flow while the effect of Reynolds number was found to be small in the case of assisted flow. The Nusselt number values were lower for opposed flow than the assisted flow. The temperature profiles results have revealed that the secondary flows created by natural convection have a significant effect on the heat transfer process. The obtained average Nusselt number values were correlated by dimensionless groups as Log Nu against Log Ra/Re.

A study of condensate retention and the attendant thermal-hydraulic effect associated with changes in air-side surface wettability is presented for a series of slit-fin-and-tube heat exchangers of identical geometry with controlled wettability covering a wide range of contact angles. An experiment in which the retained mass of air-side condensate was measured under dynamic conditions is described, and the results are analyzed using conventional thermal-hydraulic measurements of j and f. The data demonstrate that for the heat exchangers used in this study, the j factor is not strongly influenced by condensate retention, but the friction factor is significantly reduced for surfaces of increased wettability. Hydrophilic heat exchangers retain much less air-side condensate than do the hydrophobic heat exchangers, and the amount of retention is found to depend on the air-side Reynolds number (Redh) and the rate of latent heat transfer (Ql). Based on an assumption of filmwise condensation, a new model for predicting the mass of retained condensate is described and compared with the steady-sate retention data. The model is successful in predicting retained condensate over a wide range of tested conditions. The potential of this new approach and possible refinements that will add engineering value are discussed.

Jet array is an arrangement typically used to cool several gas turbine parts. Some examples of such applications can be found in the impingement cooled region of gas turbine airfoils or in the turbine blade tip clearances control of large aero-engines. In the open literature, several contributions focus on the impingement jets formation and deal with the heat transfer phenomena that take place on the impingement target surface. However, deficiencies of general studies emerge when the internal convective cooling of the impinging system feeding channels is concerned. In this work, an aerothermal analysis of jet arrays for active clearance control (ACC) was performed; the aim was the definition of a correlation for the internal (i.e., within the feeding channel) convective heat transfer coefficient augmentation due to the coolant extraction operated by the bleeding holes. The data were taken from a set of computational fluid-dynamics (CFD) Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations, in which the behavior of the cooling system was investigated over a wide range of fluid-dynamics conditions. More in detail, several different holes arrangements were investigated with the aim of evaluating the influence of the hole spacing on the heat transfer coefficient distribution. Tests were conducted by varying the feeding channel Reynolds number in a wide range of real engine operative conditions. An in depth analysis of the numerical data set has underlined the opportunity of an efficient reduction through the local suction ratio (SR) of hole and feeding pipe, local Reynolds number, and manifold porosity: the dependence of the heat transfer coefficient enhancement factor (EF) from these parameter is roughly exponential.

This paper presents the main results of the research developed by the author in his postdoctoral investigations on heat transfer calculations during film condensation inside tubes. The elements studied are combined in an analysis expression that provides a reasonable fit with the available experimental data, which includes a total of 22 fluids, including water, refrigerants and a wide range of organic substances, which condense inside horizontal, inclined and vertical tubes. These experimental data were obtained from the reports of 33 sources. Available data covers tube diameters from 2 to 50 mm, mass flow rates from 3 to 850 kg/(m2s), reduced pressures ranging from 0.0008 to 0.91, values for single-phase from 1 to , Reynolds number for two-phase from 900 to 594390, Reynolds number for single-phase from 65 to 84950 and vapor quality from 0.01 to 0.99. The mean deviation found for the analyzed data for horizontal tubes was 13.4%, while for the inclined and vertical tubes data the mean deviation was 14.9%. In all cases, the agreement of the proposed model is good enough to be considered satisfactory for practical design.

Abstract An experimental and numerical study of the convective heat transfer enhancement provided by two rib families (W and Broken W) is presented, covering Reynolds numbers (Re) between 300,000 to 900,000 in a straight channel with a rectangular cross section (AR=1.29). These high Reynolds numbers were selected for the current study since most data in the available literature typically pertain to investigations at lower Reynolds numbers. The objective of this study is to assess the local heat transfer coefficient (HTC) enhancement (compared with a smooth channel) and the overall thermal performance, taking into account the effect of increased roughness on the friction factor, of a group of W shaped turbulators over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. Furthermore, the effects of increasing the rib spacing on the thermal performance of the Broken W configuration are presented and discussed. The numerical results are compared against heat transfer measurements obtained using the Transient Liquid Crystal (TLC) method. The research shows that for the Broken W turbulators, increasing the Reynolds number is associated with an overall decrease of the thermal performance while the thermal performance of the W configuration is relatively insensitive to Reynolds number. Nevertheless, the Broken W configuration delivers higher thermal performance and heat transfer compared with the W configuration for the range of Re investigated. The Broken W configuration with a pitch spacing of 10 times the rib height was shown to provide the optimal thermal performance in the configurations investigated here.

Experimental studies of forced convection heat transfer from different body shapes were conducted to determine the effects of Reynolds number and different characteristic body lengths on the area-averaged Nusselt number. Although the bodies differed significantly in their shapes, they had approximately the same total surface area, A = 11,304 mm2 ± 5%. This ensured that for a given free stream velocity and total heat transfer rate all bodies had similar trends for the relationship of Nusselt and Reynolds numbers. The experimental program range was conducted in the Reynolds number range 104≤ReA≤105 and Prandtl number 0.71. Finally, the empirical models for forced convection heat transfer were developed. These empirical models were valid for a wide range of Reynolds numbers 0≤ReA≤105. The present experimental correlations were compared with available correlation equations and experimental data. These comparisons show very good agreement.

Experiments are performed to study the single-phase transient forced convection heat transfer on an array of 4×1 flush-mounted discrete heat sources in a vertical rectangular channel during the pump-on transient operation. Water is the coolant media and the flow covers the wide range of laminar flow regime with Reynolds number, based on heat source length, from 800 to 2625. The applied uniform heat flux ranges from 1 to 7W∕cm2. For flush-mounted heaters the heat transfer characteristics are studied and correlations are presented for four chips as well as for overall data in the transient regime. The experimental results indicate that the heat transfer coefficient is affected strongly by the number of chips and the Reynolds number. Finally the general impacts of heat source protrusions (B=1, 2 mm) on heat transfer behavior of four chips are investigated by comparing the results obtained from flush-mounted (B=0) heaters.
